Blacks Helped Pioneer the West.” – Herb Jeffries Herb Jeffries, a Detroit jazz singer, was dismayed the first time he saw black audiences in the South lining up outside segregated theaters to watch all white casts in the popular cowboy films of the 1930s. He was inspired to create films that showed that black cowboys helped win the West, too. His story is one of many found in Bruce A. Glasrud and Michael N. Searles’s broad and fascinating collection of essays on African Americans’ experiences in the American West titled Black Cowboys in the American West: On the Range, On the Stage, Behind the Badge. The editors organize thirteen brief scholarly articles into three categories: “Cowboys on the Range,” “Performing Cowboys,” and “Outriders of the Black Cowboys.” Glasrud introduces the essays; Searles provides a “concluding overview” of many of the issues raised in the essays at the end. -

Fadeke Castor Committee Members, Tom Green David Donkor Head of Department, Cynthia Werner December 2014 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2014 Myeshia Chanel Babers ABSTRACT In this ethnographic study I use queer theory to consider how black cowboys interact with each other to produce counter or micro-narratives about Black male pathologies and socialization in multiple masculinities. Queer theory provides a model to analyze the social- cultural significance of considering the intersection of race and gender as constructed binaries without focusing on sexuality. The lack of information about Black cowboys from other disciplines creates a peculiar position regarding notions, representations, and understandings about the racially signified cowboys in three ways. First, Black cowboys’ relegation to the past leaves contemporary Black cowboys nearly invisible. Second, dominant narratives about notable Black cowboys are written from a particular historical perspective. This perspective suggests that Black cowboys are a “thing of the past” and extinct figures in American society who were largely absent in the American west except as they proved to possess exceptional “cowboying” abilities. Goldstein-Shirley-Black Cowboys Black Cowboys in the American West: An Historiographical Review David Goldstein-Shirley University of Washington, Bothell Few subj ects in the ethnic experience of the Unit ed States are as fraught with mythology and misinformation as black cowboys. Although absent from most classic history texts of the American West, black cowboys probably constituted about a quarter of the working cowboys in the nineteenth century, although quantitative data to establish a numbe r are lacking. This essay reviews the historiography of black cowboys pub lished during the last ha lf-century, noting how much of it is marred either by glossing over the presence of black cow boys or by credulously repeating estimates of their numbe rs established by earlier work. The essa y speculates whether such problematic scholarship stems from unacknowledged prejudice among mainstream historians or from carelessness and calls for more and improved scholarly attention to the role of African American cowboys in the American West. Of the estimated 35,000 cowboys on the Western American fron tier during the second half of the nineteenth century probably several thousand were black, although figures offered by several historians must be regarded as no more than conjectures.1 A potentially high percent age of Blacks in the cattle business is remarkable, especially consider ing that in both 1860 and 1910 they constituted less than one percent of the West's population.2 Yet scholarly attention to them has been inter mittent and patchy at best. After a handful of texts on the topic were published in the 1950s and 1960s, interest waned, and even some re cent, major works on the American West give shortsh rift to black cow boys. -

This standard requires students to examine and describe how life changed in the United States from the late 1800’s century to the early and 1900’s. Students must be able to describe how the United States economic system changed from being agricultural to an industrialized society. This change led to the development of cities or urban environments as well as involving movement westward. With these changes, new technology led to the rise and fall of cattle trails and the development of an extensive railway system (cattle trails, railheads, and the Transcontinental Railway system). The country also experienced industrialization in growing cities as well as new technologies and innovations like the airplane by the Wright brothers, agricultural developments of George Washington Carver, improved communication by Alexander Graham Bell, and the inventions of Thomas Edison. -

Werner December 2017 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2017 Myeshia Chanel Babers ABSTRACT This project is an ethnography that engages participants and readers in multifaceted and multi-vocal formations of black masculinity and manhood in Western culture. I will present narratives set in different venues for black Western cultural practices where black cowboys communicate information about gender roles and norms. I represent black masculinities among three groups, or types of cowboys— ranchers, rodeo cowboys, and Trail riders— to capture multiple masculinities. In this study, I define black cowboys as Black/African-Americans who participate in ranching, rodeoing, and trailriding. I also make references to Black women who participate in these Western cultural practices and I consider them to be cowboys as well. My broader research question asks how black men transmit cultural information about masculinity through black Western cultural practices. I examine intimate moments of exchange among some groups of contemporary cowboys and look at mechanisms they use to shift racist ideologies. Where knowledge is currency, the person who understands how social and cultural capital is at stake is also able to code switch and maintain a balance in social-cultural differences of opinion. As a black cowboy, the professional rodeo roper destabilizes notions of blackness. -

African American Cowboys: a Forgotten Legacy
Victoria Li 08/14/20 African American Cowboys: A Forgotten Legacy Literature, film, and music have made the honest and brave cowboy an icon of the West. These forms of media have embedded tales of white cowboys in gunfights and white lone rangers busting bronchos into the classic American narrative. However, these accounts ignore the multicultural character of 19th-century cattle raising. Not only did cowboy techniques originate from Mexican vaqueros, but African Americans also played an essential role in the growth of Western ranching. The rise of integrated cowboy crews and cattle towns during the era of the long drives was a unique phenomenon uncharacteristic of the 19th century. However, whites in power then purposefully excluded black cowboys from the narrative and legacy of the West to conceal the story of a desegregated community distinguished by mutual respect between blacks and whites. African American expertise played a crucial role in the development of the American cattle system. Indeed, before emancipation, many slaves were purchased and known for their skill as cowhands.1 In South Carolina, African expertise was likely essential to the expansion of the cattle industry.2 In antebellum Texas, whites working with cattle were referred to as drovers, traders, or stock raisers and keepers, while blacks were called the more-derogatory “cow boy”, which may be the origin of the term “cowboy” and a testament to the consistent presence of African Americans on the range.3 Following the Civil War, the great era of the cattle crews 1 Deborah M.
