The War Memorial is a 40-feet high memorial REZANG LA WAR MEMORIAL dedicated to the martyrs of the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict. This memorial, locally referred as the Rezang La War Memorial was ‘Namgyal Chortan’ has names of 2420 soldiers created in the memory of brave etched in gold on 32 black granite plaques. soldiers of 13 Kumaon who gallantly repulsed the Chinese attack on Rezang La during 1962 Indo–China War. 13 Kumaon was tasked to defend Rezang La under the leadership of Major , PVC (Posthumous).

CHUSUL WAR MEMORIAL War Memorial is dedicated to the brave gurkha soldiers who had sacrificed their life in the Battle of Sirjip during 1962 Indo- China War. The Battle was fought under the leadership of Major , PVC (Posthumous).

PM CELEBRATES DIWALI WITH SOLDIERS Shri , Hon’ble Prime Minister celebrated Diwali with troops in Kashmir valley. He exchanged sweets with troops and stated that he celebrates Diwali with troops as he considers them to be his family members.

RM VISITS ANDAMAN & NICOBAR COMMAND Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman visited Andaman & Nicobar Command on 18 - 19 Oct 2017. On arrival she was presented a joint services Guard of Honour by the troops of Andaman & Nicobar Command. A comprehensive brief on the security environment and thrust areas of the Command was given to her. The Minister appreciated the work being done by the troops in the challenging environment and exhorted to continue service to the nation in the highest traditions of Indian Armed Forces.

ARMY COMMANDERS CONFERENCE 2017 The bi-annual Army Commanders Conference 2017 was conducted from 09 to 15 Oct 2017 at New Delhi. The conference was presided over by the COAS and attended by Army Commanders, PSOs and DGs. The Conference was also addressed by Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri. During the conference issues related to operations, logistics, administration, human resource management and welfare of troops were discussed.

EX INDRA – 2017 Exercise Indra 2017, the first ever Tri Services Joint Exercise between India and Russia was conducted in Russia from 19 to 29 Oct 2017. Exercise Indra 2017 provided an opportunity to the armed forces of both countries to train in counter terrorism operations in a joint service environment. Exercise Indra will strengthen mutual confidence, interoperability and enable sharing of best practices between both the armed forces.

EX MITRA SHAKTI 2017

Exercise Mitra Shakti 2017, Indo – Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise was conducted from 14 to 26 Oct 2017 at Pune. The aim of exercise was to train troops in counter terrorism operations, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Management (HADR). The Exercise enhanced defence co-operation and military relations between the two nations.

EX PRALAY SAHAYAM Exercise Pralay Sahayam was conceptualized as a HADR exercise based on an urban flooding scenario in the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. It was conducted by the Bison Division under the aegis of Sudharshan Chakra Corps with assistance from Government of Telangana in Sep 2017. The exercise was attended by Hon’ble MoS for Home Affairs, Hon’ble RRM, Hon’ble Dy CM of Telangana and Army Commander, Southern Command.

6 Baatcheet October 2017 SNIPPETS A coffee table book on the Indian Army was released by Gen Bipin Rawat, COAS on 12 Oct 2017 during the Army Commanders Conference. Coffee Table Book ‘The Indian Army’ has an ideational

approach and is intended to be a pictorial journey encapsulating our ideals, commitments, institutions, pursuits and history since 15 Aug 1947.

Army Design Bureau and FICCI organised a seminar on ‘Solutions to Problem Statements’ on 25 Oct 2017. The Army Design Bureau has taken a number of initiatives to engage the Academia and Industry through a series of outreach programmes to realise the vision of self-reliance in the defence sector through “Make in India”.

Militia group Mai Mai Sector Commander along with two others surrendered to the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo–MONUSCO on 20 Oct 2017. The operation was conducted by the Indian peacekeepers.

India has always contributed generously to UN demands for peacekeeping. Known for their equanimity and forbearance, Indian troops have proved popular everywhere. The first call came early enough, when India sent troops to Korea to form the Custodian Force (India), which functioned under the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission headed by Major General (later General) KS Thimayya, DSO in 1953-54. This was a delicate task, involving the repatriation of Prisoners of War, which was followed by a stint at Gaza to keep Israeli and Egyptian forces apart.

UNIFIL (UNITED NATIONS INTERIM FORCE IN LEBANON)

On March 19, 1978, the UN Security Council decided to establish the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) with a mandate to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces, restoring international peace and security and assisting the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area. India became a troop contributing country to UNIFIL since 1998.

UNMISS (UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN SOUTH SUDAN)

The UN Security Council established UNMIS under Resolution 1590 on March 24, 2005 to support implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/ Army on January 9, 2005. The Indian Army deployed two Infantry Battalion Groups and a Sector HQ for the mission. The mandate of UNMIS ended on July 9, 2011 and the same day South Sudan declared independence. In support of the new nation, the United Nations Council established a succeeding mission – United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Indian Army peacekeepers organised a medical camp for the citizens of South Sudan

MONUSCO (UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION STABLIZATION MISSION IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO)

The 301 Infantry Brigade also called the North Kivu Brigade, has been part of MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2005. Approximately 4,000 Indian Army peacekeepers have been deployed in this country to ensure peace and stability after violent and turbulent clashes between ethnic armed groups in Eastern DRC. A Youth Mela was organised by the Chinar Corps at Srinagar on 21 Oct 2017. Several events were organised to provide an opportunity to show case the talent and creativity of the Kashmiri youth. Mr. N N Vohra, Hon’ble Governor of J & K was the Chief Guest.

The Scouts Regimental Centre conducted recruitment rally at various places in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in the month of Oct 2017. A total of 1357 aspiring candidates participated in rally.

A National Integration Tour comprising of 20 students and two teachers of the remote Chirang District of Assam was conducted to Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer and Udaipur under the aegis of Red Horns Division. The aim of tour was to provide an insight into the rich cultural heritage, developments in others parts of the country and also provide an opportunity to meet prominent personalities of our great nation. Students also interacted with Hon’ble President of India during their visit to Delhi.

A medical camp was organised as part of 'Op Samaritan' under the aegis of Ball of Fire division at village Buragaon on 20 - 21 Oct 2017. Approximately 600 patients were treated over a span of two days.

Indian Army Engineers at Sector completed the de-mining work of three old vintage minefields on 13 Oct 2017. This will fecilitate the civil administration in construction of proposed PMGSY road stretch in villages. 12 Baatcheet October 2017 SPORTS & ADVENTURE

Sub Jitu Rai along with Heena Sidhu brought laurels to the Nation by winning Gold Medal in the mixed team 10 meter Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2017.

The 10th Acrobatic Gymnastics Asian Championship was held at Almaty, Kazakhstan in Sep 2017. One coach and seven players of Army Node Gymnastic Team represented India in the championship and won Bronze medal for the first time in the history of Indian gymnastic.

Lt Col Bharat Kumar has made the country and Indian Army proud by becoming the first Indian to finish the Race Around Austria (RAA), the toughest endurance cycling race in Europe in the month of Aug 2017. The

officer is presently holding two titles of Super Randonneur. Randonneuring is a long- distance, unsupported, non competitive cycling within prescribed time limits.

Army Equestrian Championship 2017, Meerut Horse Show & Asian Games Trials were organised by RVC Centre & College at Meerut from 04 to 15 Oct 2017. 135 Army & Civil riders and 230 horses participated in the event.

SMS BASED INFO MS DISSEMINATION SYSTEM MS BRANCH BRANCH BY MS BRANCH

In order to enable the MS Branch to reach out to the environment in a faster timeframe, a SMS based Information Dissemination System has been operationalized on 14 Sep 2017. The application has been developed in-house by MS (Auto), It uses the secure NIC portal of the in an air gapped mode for sending out SMSs on registered mobile Nos of officers.

Messages pertaining to posting, foreign assignment calls, nomination on course, receipt of CRs, status of complaints, PMR and Re-employment among other topics are being sent out. The system has facilitated better reach with officers in the environment, particularly officers posted in far flung areas, non military stations or in establishments, where Army Data Network is unavailable. In addition, this would also be of immense help to contact officers on move or on leave. Initial feedback from the environment has been positive and measures to further enhance the system will be undertaken.
