The Aerospace Update Earth Day 2017 April 25, 2017 Video Credit: NASA Johnson Space Center Record-Breaking NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson Sets New Record for Time in Space NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson flew through the standing record for cumulative time spent in space by a U.S. astronaut at 1:27 a.m. EDT on April 24, and with the recent extension of her stay at the International Space Station, she has five months to rack up a new one. This is Whitson’s third long-duration stay onboard the space station, and in March her mission was extended into September, increasing the amount of valuable astronaut time available for experiments on board the station. Source & Photo Credit: NASA Soyuz MS-04 Sends Two-Man Crew on Fast-Track to ISS Russia’s Soyuz rocket successfully lifted a two-man crew from Russia and the U.S. into orbit and on the fast lane to the International Space Station on Thursday, blasting off from the world’s oldest spaceport in Kazakhstan. The trusted Soyuz FG rocket lifted off from Site 1/5 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 7:13 UTC, carrying into orbit the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft manned by fifth-time space flier and third- time Soyuz commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and NASA’s Jack Fischer. Thursday’s launch marks the first Soyuz mission with two instead of three crew members since Soyuz TMA-2 that lifted off from the same Baikonur launch pad in April 2003 with ISS Expedition 7 crew members Yuri Malenchenko and Ed Lu. Spacex Crs-11 Mission Overview
SPACEX CRS-11 MISSION OVERVIEW SpaceX’s eleventh contracted cargo resupply mission with NASA to the International Space Station will deliver almost 6,000 pounds of science and research, crew supplies and vehicle hardware to the orbital laboratory and its crew. Launch is targeted for Thursday, June 1, 2017. The Dragon spacecraft will launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and arrive at the space station two days later. Expedition 51 crew members Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer of NASA, Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) and cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos are currently living aboard the orbiting laboratory. Pesquet and Novitskiy are slated to return to Earth June 2 which will mark the start of Expedition 52. Fischer and Whitson will use the station’s robotic arm to capture Dragon when it arrives on station. The spacecraft will be berthed to the Earth-facing port on the Harmony module. Dragon will carry hardware and supplies to support dozens of the of approximately 250 science and research investigations that will occur during Expeditions 52 and 53. The unpressurized trunk of the spacecraft will also hold three payloads that will study neutron stars, test solar arrays, and hold instruments for Earth-observation. This gigantic country stretching between Kaliningrad and Vladivostok is distinguished by its cultural heritage, breathtaking natural landscapes, and valuable mineral resources TEXT ANNA SCHRIEVER EVONIK COUNTRY RUSSIA In bitter cold, workers check the weld seams of a natural gas pipeline near the city of Novy Urengoy in western Siberia. Russia has around a third of the estimated worldwide reserves of natural gas, which is transported by freighters or pipelines to customers all over the globe. The pipelines are subjected to extraordinary levels of stress. If even very small amounts of water combine with the methane and ethane in the natural gas, they can cause a blockage or even a break in the pipelines. This can be prevented by a technology based on glycol and methanol. But there’s a problem—methanol is toxic, and very large amounts of it are needed. Evonik can provide an alternative. Small amounts of a polymer based on the methacrylate monomer VISIOMER® can prevent pipeline blockages with the same degree of effectiveness. -

NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson Returns from the International Space Station with Record-Breaking Accomplishments, September 4, 2017 President Trump Welcome Home Record-breaking NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer received a special welcome as they were flying home to Houston Sunday evening. President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Whitson and Fischer on a NASA place following Whitson’s record-breaking mission to the International Space Station. Whitson, Fischer, and Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos, landed back on Earth Saturday in Kazakhstan. She and Fischer flew to NASA Johnson Space Center’s Ellington Field Sunday. “I want to congratulate Peggy and Jack for their incredible accomplishments. They make us all very proud,” said President Trump. “Exploration has always been at the core of who we are as Americans, and their brave contributions to human spaceflight have continued that great tradition.” Whitson’s records are: • She is the U.S astronaut who has the most cumulative time in space with a total of 665 days during three long-duration missions. • She is the only female astronaut to command the station twice. During her second mission, she became the first woman to command the space station. During this mission, she became the first woman to command the space station twice-- she was station commander from April 9 through June 1. • She is the female astronaut who has spent the longest time in orbit during a single spaceflight — 288 days. • She holds multiple spacewalking records: completing the most total spacewalks — 10; and most total spacewalking time — 60 hours, 21 minutes-- for a women; and having the third most spacewalking time for any spacefarer (a cosmonaut is first and former Astronaut Michael Lopez- Alegria is second) “Peggy is an inspiration to us all,” said President Trump, “especially to young women interested in or currently pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math.” This was the president’s second call with the two astronauts. -
