What I found there, amazed me and affirmed my belief that there is a talent hidden in everyone, the only need is to let it emerge. A talent contest may soon be on the cards. This month, we feature Vinayak Honnavar, an established flutist in the Indian Classical Music and the inventor of a unique and very revolutionary musical instrument, the Tarbansi or Tanuveena, which is a fusion instrument made by combining a Flute with a Veena or Sitar. We wish him success in making this instrument popular among musicians worldwide. Till we meet again, Keep reading

Vinayak was born with a good voice and singing ability and his mother was his first teacher in the music world. Later, he was groomed by his uncle Shankar B. When he was 10 years old, Vinayak’s uncle gave him a flute made up of PVC pipe. With that flute he began his foray into Vmusic. Greatly inspired by renowned flutist Pan- dit Hariprasad Chaurasia and following his foot- steps; Vinayak developed basic skills in flute by himself, merely by hearing performances on ‘All India Radio’. Vinayak then had a privilege of learning from re- nowned artist Pt. BR Joshi, who is intern disciple of Legendry Artist Lt. Bharatratna Bhimsen Joshi. From Pt. BR Joshi Vinayak mastered both vocal and flute. Vinayak later on came under the influ- ence of the flute maestro Pandit. Venkatesh God- khindi (A legendry artist of Kirana Gharana). Since he came from middle class family and lost his father at an early age, Vinayak’s mother, who is a teacher, was the only earning member of the family. It became necessary for him to balance both his profession (as an engineer) and his pas- sion of music. With the valuable guidance and blessings from such illustrious Gurus, coupled with the sheer hard work, Vinayak mastered the instrument at a very young age. Vinayak’s performances reflect a unique blend of fluency and melody with a systematic Badhat and aesthetic approach giving due weightage to both Gayaki (singing style) and Gatkari (Instrumen- tal style) Anga’s. Use of ‘key’ in his flute, invented by his Guru Pt. Venkatesh Godkhindi unfolds Ra- gas beautifully by producing mends [Sliding from one note (Panchama) to another]. Vinayak Honnavar

He was selected to ‘IX World Flutes Festival’ held in Men- doza (Argentina) 2017 as a cultural leading exponent of In- dia. This Festival, with an international reach, invited great representatives from different regions of the world. Each Master brought a wealth of valuable information through concerts, master classes, workshops, debates and exposi- tions and he was the only artist who was selected from India by the Academic Committee of the IX World Flutes Festival 2017. Tejesh discovered his passion for the Southern martial art form - kalaripayattu. First, studying under Sudarshan Sampath, he now continues his training with Ranjan Mullarat, having become a decorated practitioner of the form in his own right. Tejesh represented the state of Karnataka in the 2016 and 2017 national kalaripayattu champion- ships, and was awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in three of its sections. Tejesh’s style as a dancer is as unique as it is di- verse. As a soloist, Tejesh is lauded for his preci- sion, extension, control, and fluidity of movement. His own choreographies draw from his particular approaches to combining contemporary dance with martial art forms such as kalaripayattu and thang ta, as well as yoga, aerial dance, and cut- ting-edge interpretations of flow art. Under the guid- ance of Guru Madhu Nataraj Kiran, the production exhibits the inevitable evolution of Tejesh’s own identity into one of an artist, through various forms of dance and martial art. “It’s my journey ‘asthithva’ , which has made me discover the person I am meant to be,” says Tejesh. Tejesh premiered his production Arya Sacca in 2016 at the Nayak Festival (Nasik). A mixed media work, the produc- tion explores the life of the character Ashoka through the prism of Buddhism’s four noble truths: dukkha, samudaya, nirhodha, and magga. In collaboration with his mentors, fellow dancers, and teachers, Tejesh designs choreography in Indian contemporary dance and kalaripayattu against a backdrop of imagery that depicts a historically significant philosophy and period. Tejesh’s most recent work, Varna, premiered at the second Akhila Bharatiya Nritya Sammelan (Nasik) in May 2017. The production delves into alternative understandings of the concept of varna as social category, which Tejesh illus- trates in contemporary dance, kalaripayattu, aerial dance, and flow art. Mentored by both Guru Madhu Nataraj Ki- ran and Janardhan Raj Urs, the production is the nexus of extraordinary choreographic, visual, and technological design.

Released in 2017, this film saw Prashantt essaying a role that is much older than himself. “I worked with the acting ICON Naseeruddin Shah, and Arshad Warsi. The subject and the character excited me, but the thought of working with Nas- eer saab is beyond any feeling” reveals Prashantt. Prashantt Guptha seems to be a true Rajasthani at heart. For, every time he achieves success, there seems to be something connecting him to his home and hearth. After Rajasthan Internation- al Film Festival (RIFF) and now Rajasthan-based Johareez, Prashantt is elated about this home- connect that seems to be constantly evolving it- self. “You can say, total connect. Rajasthan is my native state,” says Prashantt with pride. “Rohit chose me because of this connect. He found my ac TO r Prashantt Guptha

I guess it’s just my state and its people showing their love and support by granting me honours and opportunities. Likewise goes for johareez.com... a superb online jewellery and watch portal with its HQ in Rajasthan, which has me as the face of its men’s collection. I just finished shooting this campaign and it felt great wearing men’s jewellery that is very trendy and stylish. And obviously since this campaign again brought me closer to my roots.” What next? “What is in store will reveal itself with time,” he grins, quoting Robert De Niro as a parting shot… ‘One of the things about acting is that it allows you to live other people’s lives without having to pay the price they may have’. www.indiantalentmag.com 57 elhi born, Drummer Arbaz jauhar, com- pleted his school from Jamia University. Arbaz wasn’t a creative kid from the start- Ding and didn’t have any idea what to do in future. As parents suggested, he took science in order to be an engineer. After completing his schooling, he gradually real- ized that music always pulled him and he always felt that he can do something good in this field. DBut choosing music over studies was never an easy job. Arbaz started his graduation from JD Institute, Hauz-Khas and at the same time, started learning drums from an institute. Arbaz knew that his parents needed a secure job for him so he became a Fashion designer and started working as a freelancer. But on the other hand, Arbaz continued working in the music field as well. “Yes it took time but dedications makes you worth it”, says Arbaz. He started his music as a partial thing and created a band ‘JAZBA E JU- NOON’ with his mates. They learnt, jammed and put in every effort possible to make it work. Arbaz started taking tuitions to get money for the drum classes. Music made him independent and he always tried his best to not to take any kinda help from anyone as to follow his passion for music. They worked hard and made it top 5 bands among Delhi in 2014. ‘JAZBA E JUNOON’ won many competi- tions as the best band and performed in many cit- ies. They were featured in many newspapers and TV channels. Arbaz was able to make music his priority and now with the whole team they are performing ev- erywhere with a good atmosphere. They feel lucky and blessed that they were able to make this pos- sible and prove totheir parents what they dreamed of. The band always works extra to make it practi- cally possible and maintains it in the best way.
