Placement Brochure 2017 - 2019 1 DEAN'S MESSAGE
It is with great pleasure that I introduce the graduating batch of M.A. Social Work, 2017-19 through this brochure. The social work programme is built on foundational values of social justice, equality and empowerment. What is distinct about the programme is its ability to not only impart knowledge and skills but to develop a critical-analytical perspective amongst our students that is mindful of issues of identity and diversity, vulnerability and marginalisation and power and politics. I may thus proudly say that the Social Work students possess a broad band-width with an ability to straddle the worlds of interventions, research, policy formulation, programme implementation and evaluation and action and advocacy.
The M.A. Social Work programme is offered across nine thematic areas. These thematic areas are a representation of the Schools' engagement with these issues through teaching, ield action, research and public policy. Students thus learn in a vibrant environment where they are able to link classroom teaching with practice and praxis. Students engage with their chosen thematic areas intensively in the second year of the programme. The irst year is largely generic, where students get introduced to the ield of Social Work through Fieldwork and Foundation, Core and Thematic courses. The irst year thus prepares students to transition to the second year to deepen their knowledge in the chosen thematic area.
'Learning by doing' is the principle on which the Social Work programme stands solidly. Fieldwork is an integral component of the programme; ieldwork gives students the opportunity to engage with diverse settings and issues throughout the two years. The Social Work students put in a minimum of 900 hours of supervised and guided ieldwork over the two years. This prepares them for effective and competent social work practice.
The graduating batch of 2017-19 of the School of Social Work brings with it a diversity, sensitivity and a desire to engage on socially relevant issues. I am con ident that you will enjoy your interactions with them.
Dr. Shubhada Maitra Professor and Dean, School of Social Work, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai

M.A. SOCIAL WORK IN CRIMINOLOGY AND JUSTICE A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE’S CHAIRPERSON CENTRE FOR CRIMINOLOGY AND JUSTICE
Social Work in the thematic ield of Criminology and Justice provides immense opportunity to work with actors and institutions dealing with exclusion, marginalisation and vulnerabilities. It equips students to deal with issues of crime, law and justice from a rights-based perspective. Students of this programme are trained to critically re lect on issues of power and exclusion. As a result students have the capacity to build synergies with ield realities, ongoing programmes as well as civil society groups. They have the ability to build partnerships with both state and non state actors. They are exposed to the importance of planning, coordinating, implementing and monitoring activities within the overall plan and objectives of a programme/agency and policy.
The broad concerns of the programme correspond to three inter-related areas: (i) it provides a strong theoretical underpinning on human rights (ii) it encourages a critical examination of crime around issues such as gender-based violence, atrocities against dalits, de-noti ied tribes and socially stigmatised communities; it also dwells upon areas related to juvenile justice and crime among youth, traf icking of drugs and human beings, transnational crime and terrorism; and (iii) lays the foundation towards a critical understanding of criminal justice agencies and current issues such as policing, prison management, custodial justice, human rights violations, role of the State, correctional agencies and alternative justice systems.
Since the ield is characterised by working with involuntary clients and groups who are almost always, the most stigmatised and socially excluded populations, working with such groups requires specialised knowledge, attitudes and skills, speci ic to justice settings (including international laws and conventions, constitutional and legal provisions, powers and accountability of the system, and correctional laws and policies). They have skills to work with resistant and status-quoit systems; to engage with overloaded and demoralised justice functionaries and to work with affected groups who are fatalistic and traumatised due to their experiences with society and the State. Thus sensitivity and adaptability, ability to work in a high- pressure work environment with frequent urgent deadlines, to multi-task and handling con idential and sensitive issues in a responsible and mature manner are additional skills they imbibe in the ield. Working in such situations has exposed them to the critical need to be open to change, critical feedback and differing points of view.
Given the wide diversity of backgrounds the graduating group has, we can attest that each student has unique facilitation and communication skills. All of them have been exposed to the importance of research in guiding programme decisions. The students through the ield practicum have demonstrated their interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations with people in a multi-cultural-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Erstwhile, CODP was known as The Department of Urban and Rural Community Development (URCD), which was established in the early ifties. M.A. SOCIAL WORK IN DISABILITY STUDIES AND ACTION A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE’S CHAIRPERSON CENTRE FOR DISABILITY STUDIES AND ACTION
The Centre for Disability Studies and Action came into existence in 2006 after restructuring of the School of Social Work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. This Centre is the irst of its kind in a University set up. The MA in Social Work in Disability Studies and Action began in the year 2008. It is a pioneering effort designed to equip students with sound theoretical knowledge about issues and concerns of persons with disability and concerned stakeholders. The broad goal of this course is to enable social work practitioners to view and work with persons with disability from a human rights and empowerment perspective.
Graduates of this programme are equipped to work as Rehabilitation Social Workers in various settings such as hospitals, clinics, early detection and intervention centres, schools, institutional setups, community settings, inclusive setups, funding agencies, policy makers and research based organisations at the governmental, non-governmental and international levels. This programme trains students to identify and work with persons with disability and concerned stakeholders. The programme provides students with a holistic understanding of disability management, care and rehabilitation both individual and community based.
Courses such as Persons with Disability and their Rehabilitation Contexts and Gender Dimensions of Disability have equipped the students to identify and work with persons with disability and the concerned stakeholders. As rehabilitation social workers, graduates are equipped to engage in work with individuals, groups, families and communities, forming self help groups and various other support groups of persons with disability and families. They are also trained to provide counselling services to persons with disabilities and their families. Through the courses such as agency administration and NGO management they have been trained in aspects related to planning, management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of various programmes and projects of disability organisations. Through in class activities and their engagement with the ield, students are trained in conducting awareness and sensitisation programmes with different stakeholders such as students, teachers, parents, persons with disability and communities in both rural and urban set ups. M.A. SOCIAL WORK IN LIVELIHOODS AND SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE’S CHAIRPERSON CENTRE FOR LIVELIHOODS AND SOCIAL INNOVATION
The Centre for Livelihoods and Social Innovation (CLSI) aims to emerge as a learning-cum-innovation centre to develop meaningful livelihood initiatives for the poor and marginalized groups in the country. A key strategy for the same is to equip students to work with vulnerable groups and marginalized communities to develop and strengthen their livelihoods through meaningful social enterprises, peoples' collectives and other innovative strategies. The major component of the M.A Social Work Programme in Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship is its innovative pedagogies and ield engagement which aims to create a cadre of professionals who are equipped to address contemporary and complex societal challenges. The ieldwork at CLSI ensures progressive learning and also re lects visible outcomes in the ield. Therefore, the courses in the third and fourth semester are designed to provide opportunities to implement theoretical understanding in the ield through critical re lexive praxis. Second year Fieldwork is structured as a process of progressive peer learning, divided in 3 key phases. First phase is of ifteen day Rural/Urban Internship at the end of the 2nd semester for contextual understanding and situational analysis of grassroots realities. Second phase begins with Livelihood Innovation Lab (LIL) in 3rd semester facilitating the development of sustainable and innovative plans by the students. It continues to the implementation of the Livelihood Innovation Plan in the 3rd semester block ield work placement and inally moving towards the next level of intervention in the same or another ield work setting for another one month of block placement at the beginning of the 4th semester. The course is thus uniquely positioned to put innovation solutions to practice by centre staging the concerns of poor and marginalized people and their livelihoods from a gendered and intersectional perspective.
CLSI has many national and international collaborations and also hosts the Right Livelihood College, RLC – TISS, a collaboration with Right Livelihood Award Foundation, Stockholm. The Right Livelihood College at TISS is one of the eight RLC campuses across the world. CLSI has also been actively engaging with the different State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM) including Chhattisgarh and ield action projects at the grassroots.
The journey towards change and transformation is not easy. However, equipped with the perspectives and skills for the same, I am sure our students will drive this process through their knowledge, skills, creativity, passion and innovation. In this pathway of social change, I wish them a fruitful journey towards people centric change and transformation.
Dr. Swati Banerjee, Associate Professor and Chairperson And Co-ordinator, Right Livelihood College, RLC – TISS Centre For Livelihoods and Social Innovation Tiss, Mumbai

M.A. SOCIAL WORK IN WOMEN CENTRED PRACTICE A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE’S CHAIRPERSON CENTER FOR WOMEN CENTRED SOCIAL WORK, WCP
Women as a category of analysis have increasingly been studied to evolve an understanding of their condition, position and status and their relationship with men, resources and power in society. With the evolution of gender studies and a critical understanding of women's position, a large body of knowledge is now increasingly available to understand the issues, as well as for developing effective interventions at different levels. Women continue to remain marginalised and have to be studied and addressed as a separate vulnerable group. Within social work epistemology and praxis, there is, thus, an imperative to include the realities of women—in particular women-centred social work. This would mean an understanding of feminist theorisations, praxis models, praxis trajectories in the global and indigenous contexts and developing appropriate skills for intervention at multiple levels. The Master of Arts in Social Work (Women-Centred Practice) endeavours to engage learners to critically understand and examine women's position in society from diverse feminist theoretical frameworks, so as to develop judicious skills of intervention and to develop women's agency and citizenship. The programme aims to prepare and equip its graduates to directly work with people — women in particular — in their communities, movements and campaigns; in organisations initiated by civil society and the state; with issues and concerns of oppressive social structures, development and state at the local, national and international level; within systems and institutions of governance and the state. The programme envisages its graduates performing the multiple roles of social worker, activist, design and implement programmes, coordinator, researcher and educator.
I wish all the students all the best for their future endeavours.

141 Placement Brochure 2017 - 2019 PRIME FIELD ACTION PROJECT OF SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK
Overview of Projects
Extension activities denote the social responsibility of teaching institutes towards the problems and the emerging needs of society and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has initiated and promoted several kinds of extension activities since its inception in 1936. The Institute has played a major role in piloting or pioneering new services and in initiating time-bound social work programmes within well-established organisations/systems, or outside them, with the objective of demonstrating to the public, the need for such services. Medical social work in hospitals, social work in schools, the child guidance clinic, and social work in family courts, to name a few, were started as demonstration projects of the TISS. Termed as Field Action Projects (FAPs) in TISS, they have always played an integral role in the curriculum of social work education.
These projects evolved out of a need to: Demonstrate new interventions; Respond to new needs and changing social realities; Provide ield experience and training to students and faculty members; Evolve new strategies for intervention; and Develop indigenous database literature for training.

Placement Brochure 2017 - 2019 142 Criminal Justice Fellowship Programme
As an Institute that holds the legacy of many irsts and a strong belief in working with the marginalized and vulnerable sections, it is only itting that we encourage our students to work on issues that involve taking the road less travelled. Apart from the Institute granting fellowships to its alumni, the School of Social Work (SSW) had also initiated Fellowships as a joint initiative of the School with NGOs, whereby six fellowships were granted between 2007-2010 in the areas of education, health and gender.
'I ACCESS' Rights Mission
The 'I-Access rights mission' is a Field Action Project initiative that enables accessibility & inclusion of students with disability in higher education. Initiated by the Center for Disability Studies & Action (CDSA) at TISS in 2013, the project seeks to develop an inclusive & accessible education policy framework that employs a bottoms-up approach, builds awareness & sensitizes stakeholders in the ield of higher education to create an environment conducive to the growth & participation of students with disability, eliminate barriers to help develop a culture of inclusion and take af irmative action to ensure access to information, communication, education, mobility, technology & accommodation. iCBR Project- Inclusive Community Rehabilitation Project
The iCBR is a Field Action Project initiate by the Center for Disability Study & Action (CDSA), School of Social Work (SSW), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Social inequalities and disparities are complex and multidimensional phenomenon and require a multidisciplinary approach taking into account the cultural, economic, geographical, political and social factors that are speci ic to the rural context. Based on the needs of such a context a multi-pronged and inclusive rights based CBR approach has been chosen for strategic interventions in collaboration and assistance with Government and Non-Governmental Organisations in order to provide livelihood support, education, health care and rehabilitation services to the disabled population within their own community for a sustained period.
Integrated Rural Health and Development Project

143 Placement Brochure 2017 - 2019 KOSHISH
Koshish was started as TISS Field Action Project in August 2006 with the primary objective of repealing the draconian beggary prevention law, which fails to recognize the circumstances that force people towards destitution and criminalizes poverty and acknowledge the historical and contextual realities like resistance and exclusion faced by de-noti ied communities, transgender community, persons with mental illness, those affected by leprosy, etc. Koshish aims to humanise existing institutions under the beggary prevention law and work towards the rehabilitation of custodialised populations living in beggars' homes. It also works towards creation of policies and programmes for homeless populations and those who live at the margins of society in urban areas.

To this end, permission to visit criminal justice or custodial institutions and interact with persons detained or con ined in police stations, prisons and government residential institutions in Maharashtra and Gujarat has been obtained from the Departments of Prisons and Women and Child Development.
RCI-VAW: Resource Centre for Interventions on Violence against Women

R.C.J.J was conceptualized in 2005, with the objective of working on issues relating with children with a special focus on Juveniles in Con lict with Law (JCL), and contextualizing them within the child protection arena. The aim was to begin work from within institutions and then initiate change at district level which in turn could be expanded at the state level.
Placement Brochure 2017 - 2019 144 Special Cell for Women and Children, Maharashtra
The Special Cell for Women and Children is an effort aimed at eliminating violence against women (VAW). It is a service provided to women survivors by trained social workers, strategically located in the police system with a clear understanding that VAW is a crime and that it is the responsibility of the State to prevent and counter it. The location within the police station aims to lead to a more co-ordinated, coherent and in-depth response to the issue by integrating quality psycho-social-legal services within the police system. The irst Special Cell for Women and Children was established in 1984 as a strategic collaboration between Bombay Police and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. At present, Special Cells is in the process of further district and even taluka-level expansion in Maharashtra, and is being operated as a scheme of the State Government. Under the scheme, TISS & local NGOs are implementing the Cells in districts. Towards Advocacy Networking and Developmental Action (TANDA) TANDA started as a ield action project in year 2011. This is based on nearly two years of student ieldwork with the Pardhi community in Mumbai through the Centre for Criminology and Justice, School of Social Work, and contribution from senior activists Mr. Simpreet Singh from the Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan. TANDA works towards “creating self-reliant NT- DNTs and ensuring the realisation of their constitutional and entitlement rights, as citizens of India”. TANDA strongly believes that NT-DNTs should organise themselves to advocate for their rights and dignity. The project aims to play the role of a change agent through generation of knowledge, capacity building and networking with different stakeholders on relevant issues towards policy advocacy. TARASHA Tarasha is a ield action project of the Centre for Health and Mental Health, School Of Social Work, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Initiated in 2011, Tarasha has been conceptualized as a community based recovery model for women recovering from mental disorders. At the core, the project addresses issues of Self, Shelter and Livelihoods. Working from a rights-based perspective, Tarasha facilitates the transition of women living with mental disorders from institutions back into the community through networking, capacity building and sensitizing programs.

- Vijayendra working in Tata Steel Rural Development Society , Jharkhand, Executive (Rural Development)
“I proudly say that I am a TISSian for life. For me TISS is one major stage in my life, where I had lot of learning. It helped me to understand the different characters around me, it taught me how to live my life happily. I was accepted by all the people around me, keeping aside my community, caste, age, gender, race and capabilities. It made me realize that the problems which I face in my life are nothing, and there are many others who are struggling to live their lives.”
- Aswathy working in an NGO called Centre for Indian Migrant Studies (CIMS Kerala), as Project Coordinator
“TISS journey has nurtured me to the person I am now. I am always proud to introduce myself as TISSIAN wherever I go and I cross path with many TISSIANs along the way and we have this unique bond.”
