A Russian Eschatology: Theological Reflections on the Music of Dmitri Shostakovich
A Russian Eschatology: Theological Reflections on the Music of Dmitri Shostakovich Submitted by Anna Megan Davis to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology in December 2011 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 3 Abstract Theological reflection on music commonly adopts a metaphysical approach, according to which the proportions of musical harmony are interpreted as ontologies of divine order, mirrored in the created world. Attempts to engage theologically with music’s expressivity have been largely rejected on the grounds of a distrust of sensuality, accusations that they endorse a ‘religion of aestheticism’ and concern that they prioritise human emotion at the expense of the divine. This thesis, however, argues that understanding music as expressive is both essential to a proper appreciation of the art form and of value to the theological task, and aims to defend and substantiate this claim in relation to the music of twentieth-century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Analysing a selection of his works with reference to culture, iconography, interiority and comedy, it seeks both to address the theological criticisms of musical expressivism and to carve out a positive theological engagement with the subject, arguing that the distinctive contribution of Shostakovich’s music to theological endeavour lies in relation to a theology of hope, articulated through the possibilities of the creative act. -

PRESS RELEASE for IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 12 July 2016
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 12 July 2016 Lea Salonga: Disney & Broadway Magic (30 September & 1 October) [12 July 2016, Hong Kong] Disney princess Lea Salonga has thrilled audiences worldwide as Jasmine and Mulan in the Disney animated classics, and has toured in the title role of the enchanting rags-to-riches fairy tale Cinderella. On stage, she has starred on Broadway in Les Misérables and created the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Back by popular demand after her sold-out performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) two seasons ago, Lea joins the orchestra, together with her conductor brother Gerard Salonga, in a magical concert of hits you know and love. Lea Salonga is one of the most influential Filipino women in the world. She began her career as a child star in the Philippines, making her professional debut at the age of seven in the musical The King and I. She received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Miss Saigon in 1991, Walt Disney Company also bestowed her with the honour of “Disney Legend” in 2011 for her portrayal of the beloved princesses. Gerard Salonga first collaborated with his sister when he was seven years old, when the backing tape for her performance malfunctioned and he stepped in as her impromptu piano accompanist. The siblings’ collaboration has continued, from singing and recording the song Happiness on Lea’s first album, to performing together at state dinners. The two will join forces again and, along with the HK Phil, bring the voice of Disney princesses and all-time Broadway favourites to Hong Kong audiences. -
The Life and Times of the Remarkable Alf Pollard
1 FROM FARMBOY TO SUPERSTAR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE REMARKABLE ALF POLLARD John S. Croucher B.A. (Hons) (Macq) MSc PhD (Minn) PhD (Macq) PhD (Hon) (DWU) FRSA FAustMS A dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Technology, Sydney Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences August 2014 2 CERTIFICATE OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP I certify that the work in this thesis has not previously been submitted for a degree nor has it been submitted as part of requirements for a degree except as fully acknowledged within the text. I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. Signature of Student: Date: 12 August 2014 3 INTRODUCTION Alf Pollard’s contribution to the business history of Australia is as yet unwritten—both as a biography of the man himself, but also his singular, albeit often quiet, achievements. He helped to shape the business world in which he operated and, in parallel, made outstanding contributions to Australian society. Cultural deprivation theory tells us that people who are working class have themselves to blame for the failure of their children in education1 and Alf was certainly from a low socio-economic, indeed extremely poor, family. He fitted such a child to the letter, although he later turned out to be an outstanding counter-example despite having no ‘built-in’ advantage as he not been socialised in a dominant wealthy culture. -
