Of those that do not, Milhaud’s La Création du monde stands out as pungently memorable, not only nostalgic, but an ever-fresh concert hall standard. It was composed for a ‘jazz’ ballet, on a scenario by poet, novelist and journalist Blaise Cendrars. Sets and costumes were by Fernand Léger, and the choreography by Jean Börlin. The commission was from the Ballets Suédois of Rolf de Maré, one of Diaghilev’s rivals among Paris impresarios, and the first performance Darius Milhaud, 1930s was given in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on 15 October 1923. Cendrars had recently edited a collection of African folk tales, and his IN BRIEF ballet scenario portrayed the creation myth as told in African legend. Milhaud’s The Creation of the World is Giant gods, trees which impregnate the earth with their seed, leaves one of the first ‘jazz ballets’ reflecting transformed into animals, men and girls emerging from the trees and what is sometimes called the Parisian performing a mating dance, until they disperse, leaving a single couple jazz age of the 1920s. The work is in six on stage, united in love. Léger’s setting was inspired by primitive African linked movements, although Milhaud art, with animal costumes in dazzling colours, with strange beaks, and pointedly leaves out any descriptive totem figures. The backdrop was cubed and squared, with horned titles in the printed score. The ballet, creatures and undulating clouds. Léger had wanted his animal skins to after an overture, depicted the earth be inflatable, an idea which had to be dropped because the sound of emerging from chaos, the creation of whooshing gas would have drowned out the orchestra! plants and animals, then a human Milhaud’s music was written for a band of 19 soloists, with prominent couple and their desire before the piano and percussion – the exact instrumentation of the African- coming of the first spring. American opera Liza, by Maceo Pinkard, which Milhaud had heard in New York’s Harlem. From his time in Rio as secretary to Paul Claudel, the French ambassador to Brazil (1916-18), Milhaud had travelled extensively and heard many exotic musics. But all their influences were thoroughly integrated into his evolving personal style. In Paris, Milhaud himself could be considered exotic. The prominent saxophone in La Création du monde, which presents in the prelude a darkly lyrical theme which will return in a kind of rondo structure, has obvious jazz associations. But it also recalls the pioneering saxophone part in Bizet’s L’Arlésienne, music for a play set in Milhaud’s native Provence. ‘Provence,’ Milhaud once wrote, ‘reaches all the way from Constantinople to Rio.’ The major/minor contours of the saxophone theme also recall Milhaud’s family origins, suggesting an affinity between the experience of the black and the Jewish races.

  • A Russian Eschatology: Theological Reflections on the Music of Dmitri Shostakovich
A Russian Eschatology: Theological Reflections on the Music of Dmitri Shostakovich Submitted by Anna Megan Davis to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology in December 2011 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 3 Abstract Theological reflection on music commonly adopts a metaphysical approach, according to which the proportions of musical harmony are interpreted as ontologies of divine order, mirrored in the created world. Attempts to engage theologically with music’s expressivity have been largely rejected on the grounds of a distrust of sensuality, accusations that they endorse a ‘religion of aestheticism’ and concern that they prioritise human emotion at the expense of the divine. This thesis, however, argues that understanding music as expressive is both essential to a proper appreciation of the art form and of value to the theological task, and aims to defend and substantiate this claim in relation to the music of twentieth-century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Analysing a selection of his works with reference to culture, iconography, interiority and comedy, it seeks both to address the theological criticisms of musical expressivism and to carve out a positive theological engagement with the subject, arguing that the distinctive contribution of Shostakovich’s music to theological endeavour lies in relation to a theology of hope, articulated through the possibilities of the creative act.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 12 July 2016 Lea Salonga: Disney & Broadway Magic (30 September & 1 October) [12 July 2016, Hong Kong] Disney princess Lea Salonga has thrilled audiences worldwide as Jasmine and Mulan in the Disney animated classics, and has toured in the title role of the enchanting rags-to-riches fairy tale Cinderella. On stage, she has starred on Broadway in Les Misérables and created the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Back by popular demand after her sold-out performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) two seasons ago, Lea joins the orchestra, together with her conductor brother Gerard Salonga, in a magical concert of hits you know and love. Lea Salonga is one of the most influential Filipino women in the world. She began her career as a child star in the Philippines, making her professional debut at the age of seven in the musical The King and I. She received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Miss Saigon in 1991, Walt Disney Company also bestowed her with the honour of “Disney Legend” in 2011 for her portrayal of the beloved princesses. Gerard Salonga first collaborated with his sister when he was seven years old, when the backing tape for her performance malfunctioned and he stepped in as her impromptu piano accompanist. The siblings’ collaboration has continued, from singing and recording the song Happiness on Lea’s first album, to performing together at state dinners. The two will join forces again and, along with the HK Phil, bring the voice of Disney princesses and all-time Broadway favourites to Hong Kong audiences.

He helped to shape the business world in which he operated and, in parallel, made outstanding contributions to Australian society. Cultural deprivation theory tells us that people who are working class have themselves to blame for the failure of their children in education1 and Alf was certainly from a low socio-economic, indeed extremely poor, family. He fitted such a child to the letter, although he later turned out to be an outstanding counter-example despite having no ‘built-in’ advantage as he not been socialised in a dominant wealthy culture.
