Living Jewishly: A Purim Idea Living a proper Jewish life should ideally include the poor of each community. In other words, we have consideration of Jewish theology and belief in the one mitzvah designed essentially to make sure that even manifold decisions we make every single day. As Reform the poorest in society could perform a different mitzvah. Jews we are not necessarily bound by Jewish law, but As we celebrate Purim this month, I would urge you to that is not an excuse to ignore Jewish principles as we go spend more time thinking Jewishly when you make your through our days. Recently on social media I saw a review decisions and consider every way in which your decision- of a local restaurant that was negative and demeaning. making affects the lives of others. I have always hated online reviews. I think that they amount to lashon harah and directly affect the livelihood L’shalom, of other people. Perhaps it is necessary on occasion if a certain business is dangerous or unsafe, but writers who pen angry reviews because they had to wait too long for Rabbi Jeremy Barras their pizza, or their chicken had the wrong sauce and the waiter making minimum wage didn’t reorganize her entire life to fix the order immediately, does not strike me as a reason to endanger the livelihood of a business owner. In the review I saw, I noticed a TBAM member comment underneath that perhaps the writer could be a little more sensitive and take their complaint directly to the owner or manager, and not air the experience publicly. I was so impressed that I wrote to our congregant and expressed my gratitude for her courageous response.

In our tradition, we are taught that how our actions affect others matters a great deal. There is even mitzvaha to greet people with joy, known as sever panim yafot. We are instructed that each time we greet others, we are supposed to avoid putting them in a bad mood with our greeting or expression.

This is not always easy to do, but we should try to bring each other joy and lift each other up whenever possible. On Purim there is a beautiful lesson that reminds us of how deeply concerned we should be for each other’s well- being. Two of the mitzvot associated with Purim include enjoying a festive meal and sending gifts of food to others. According to Rabbi Israel Isserlein ben Petachia, famed 15th century author of the Terumat Hadeshen, the reason we are commanded to send food to each other is to make sure that everyone has food for the festive meal, including clergy corner Cantor Rachelle Nelson [email protected]

“We connected with the people of Israel. We met Tracy and Gal, our local guides. Their insight and local knowledge added so much. We had the opportunity to meet families and spend the day and night with them. We did team building exercises. We cooked and shared meals together. Boy, we were not tourists anymore. We did so many things that I had not done before.

We toured neighborhoods and saw amazing graffiti art like I had not seen before. We visited a chocolate factory and made our own delicious desserts. From the Dead Sea to the markets in Tel Aviv, to the Hanukkah lights in Old City to our trip to Yerucham; this trip was so much different and extremely touching and moving. But it still somehow felt like home.” - Teen, alumna

“Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a beautiful spiritual tradition at Temple Beth Am. We are blessed to have you and Erica as leaders and working so hard to give our children such an amazing opportunity at this time of their lives. This will instill the love for Israel and make sure that Judaism is part of the fabric of their life.” - Parent

The Israel Track and Trip offers 8th and 9th graders the chance to discover their relationship with Israel, how Israel matters to them and determine their own, personal why, while strengthening their friendships locally and with teens in Yerucham, Miami’s sister city in Israel. This type of teen programming already proved its impact to not only the participants but the families as well.

Having an existential conversation at an ancient Jewish site, participating in a Food Pantry in Jerusalem, exploring new culture, food and daily life with Israeli teens are all memories that will remain throughout their lives.

We invite your teen to partake in this opportunity to learn, practice, and experience Judaism and Israel. For questions or more information, please contact Tamara Donnenfeld at [email protected].

READING WITH THE RABBI Morality by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Tuesdays 12:00-1:30 p.m.

Our book club moves back to lunchtime as Rabbi Greengrass guides us in a discussion of the final book from the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, one of the most distinguished Jewish thought leaders of our time.

With liberal democracy embattled, public discourse grown toxic, family life breaking down, and drug abuse and depression on the rise, many fear what the future holds. In Morality, Rabbi Sacks traces today’s crisis to our loss of a strong, shared moral code and our elevation of self-interest over the common good. A major work of moral philosophy, the book provides an inspiring vision of a world in which we can all find our place and face the future without fear.

FEBRUARY 7, 2021 IT IS NO DREAM: THE LIFE OF THEODOR HERZL This documentary explores the life and times of Theodor Herzl, father of the modern State of Israel. Narrated by Academy Award-winner, Sir Ben Kingsley and starring Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz as the voice of Theodor Herzl, this film examines how Herzl, a well-known journalist and playwright, an assimilated, Budapest-born Jew, horrified by the Dreyfus trial in Paris and the anti- Semitism he saw spreading across Europe, took upon himself the task of attempting to create a Jewish homeland in Palestine against all odds. Over the span of eight years, Herzl organized and led a worldwide political movement that within fifty years led to the establishment of the State of Israel.

Danny soon landed a job as an assistant to writer/producer Kenya Barris, becoming one of his primary collaborators: staff writer on the Black-ish spin-off, Grown-ish, and as writer/producer of the Netflix series #BlackAF. Kenya also is Executive Producer of Danny’s original projects, co-written with writing partner Isaac Schamis, which are currently in development at ABC, 20th Century Fox, Netflix and MGM. Their main focus heading into 2021 is the launch of a new studio with the goal of promoting young, diverse new voices, specifically from the African American community, helping them tell stories which are more important than ever in today’s political climate. SOCIAL JUSTICE SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTS TOURETTES and TORAH Lessons for an Inclusive Community Featuring Pamela Schuller

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 at 7:00 PM In honor of Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month, our Tikkun Olam Committee invites you for a comedic and heartfelt performance from special guest Pamela Schuller that will challenge us to embrace, love, and find humor in the things that makes us different. As a teen, Pamela had the worst diagnosed case of Tourette Syndrome in the country, a touch of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and a whole lot of pent-up anger. She spent years depressed, suicidal, and wishing her differences away. Over time, she started looking at her life differently and turned her obstacles and challenges into the very fuel that propels her. Now an internationally known disability and mental health advocate and professional stand-up comedian, Pamela’s stories of growing up in a body she had no control over are engaging, powerful, a little bit heart-wrenching, and unapologetically funny. By Dr. Lenore C. Kipper, RJE, Judaic Studies Director, Emerita Enduring Wisdom from the Pirkei Avot Honor and respect are essential teachings of Judaism. The Hebrew wordkavod is used many times in Pirkei Avot as well as other sources. Honoring the Eternal One, parents, teachers, and friends is a traditional responsibility that we teach. Honoring parents is part of the Ten Commandments. One of the most important types of kavod is that which we show the aged. With long life comes an abundance and variety of experiences. We can benefit from their experiences by asking and listening to their perspectives on many aspects of life. The question is asked, “Who is honored and respected? The one who honors and respects others.”

Avot 4:12 Avot 4:18 “Rabbi Elazar would say, ‘Let the honor of your student be as dear “Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar would say, ‘When your friend becomes to you as your own, let the honor of your friend be equal to the angry, don’t try to calm him. When he is recently bereaved, don’t respect due to your teacher, and let the respect due to your teacher try to comfort him. When he is about to make an oath, don’t ask be equivalent to the reverence due to the Eternal One.’” him questions, and after he has been disgraced, don’t rush to see Kavod begins with each person. If we feel proud of ourselves, him.’” the choices we make, how we behave toward others, that is Rabbi Shimon advises us not to rush in to help a friend called self-respect. We can then show kavod to others with described in the quote. Why? It seems our instincts might be greater understanding. “Let your neighbor’s honor be as dear just the opposite. I believe this quote cautions us to be there, to you as your own.” When each person remembers to show but first be a listener. Rashi points out that it is difficult to calm kavod, imagine what good feelings could be created in families, someone who has just become so angry, disgraced or bereaved in schools and in the community. in the moment. A good friend learns to wait before speaking. Timing is everything! Avot 4:13 “Rabbi Simeon would say, ‘There are three crowns; the crown of Avot 4:20 Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of royalty; but the “Elisha ben Abuyah said, ‘Learning as a child; what is that like? crown of a good name is greater than all of them.’” Ink inscribed on new paper. Learning in old age; what is that like? The Hebrew for a good name is shem tov. It teaches us that Inscribed on blotted paper. Who learns from the young is like one every person can achieve this. It is not inherited. It comes with who eats unripe grapes. Who learns from elders is like one who personal worth and upright character. It implies that a good eats ripe grapes and drinks vintage wine. Don’t look at the flask name means a good reputation. From childhood to adulthood, but at what is in it. We are reminded in the last statement not to judge someone from outward appearances, but to consider the inner Avot 4:15 character virtues of a person. This is similar to the saying “Rabbi Mattiah ben Heresh said, ‘Greet everybody first, and be a “don’t judge a book by its cover”. tail to lions; but do not be a head of foxes.’” He recommends that we do not wait for others to greet us, Avot 4:21 but we should take the first step to greet others. This is a “Rabbi Elazar said, ‘Envy, lust, and the pursuit of glory takes a way to make connections with other people and take the first person out of this world, makes one unfit for human society.’” step of extending friendship. The next part of his saying is Both Rashi and Maimonides consider these traits as personal more complicated. Although you may be a person of great weaknesses and will cause a person to forget one’s knowledge knowledge and wisdom, you should strive to learn from others of Torah. Any of these three will negatively impact on a who are more distinguished, to listen and learn from them. In person’s moral and intellectual virtues. “I wonder what Grandma is doing at The Palace tonight?”

Grandkids can’t wait to see what will happen when they visit The Palace. One thing they know for sure is that Grandma won’t be sitting alone in her room in front of the TV with nothing to do. The Palace has been honored as America’s #1 senior community for its social calendar and activities. Best of all, with so much to do, the whole family is invited to join us. And they do!
