The "self' as a literary entity is supposed to be dead, and a certain kind of self doubtlessly is-& least the kind tbat sets the world as a passive landscape against which he can work out his private dcstiny. It's more or less impossible to read anyone who believes in such a self anymo~rt(Ayn Rand, for exampleL)-ndy as impossible as it is to believe that real-Me Randian figures like Mic~~Miken or Doaald Trusnp actually roam the earth. That the --a condition in which capitalism and mass media mmbine to saturate physical pnd ideological spas, leaving little or m sjmcc left for the enclaves of Nature or Free Consciousness-is an intrusive, potentially determinative force on the individual is indisputatde. I chose the writer I'll discuss in this study-Don DeLillo-for two reasons. One is that he has a highly developed macrocosmic vision of the postmodern world, an intense imaginative interest not just in the local problems of the individual, family, and community, but in the massive forms of power that affect the individual in ways he senses only vaguely and mysteriously. A second reason is that he grounds his work in a passionate concern for how the individual makes out in such a wodd. Don DeLillo is interested, in other words, in exploring strategies of self in the postmodem era? I can see that some discussion of terminology is needed here, mostly because the words "postmodern" and "self" have for some time been minotaurs inside labyrinths all their own. drawing the attention of some of the weightiest thinkers of our time. Let me begin with the term "postmodem." The literature on the nature of thc postmodem is already vast, so I'd like to enter the discussion in a specialized way--in terns of how the postmodem. as a dominant cultd condition. affects the individual? (I will avoid, at least for now. any A note on usage. By 'individual,' I mean simply 'human being' or 'person, ' and mean to imply nothing about the constitution or ontological Integrity of that Individual, I have decided agalnst the frequent used 'sub]ect,' mainIy because it implies much too strongly that the individual is subject-& something--ideology, power, culture, language--an imp1ication which I think is accepted too easily today. The idea that the individual is completely subject to or constituted by forces outside itself is pervasive among contemporary theorists, but novelists, even those most attuned to the postmodern era, find that the forces which influence us do so incompletely, or at any rate the extent of their influence is unknowable, and so the novel ist tends to trust, much more than a theorist would, their Intimations that freedom from constitution can and does exist. By the word 'self,' I mean something quite different, obviously, and it really won't do to define it here (I will explore it later in this section) except to say that it does imply the possibility of origin, free agency, or 'soul ' that the term 'subject' forecloses. I'm not going to argue here that the self in fact 'exists' In the writings of Don DeLlllo, that I will explore, only that this novelist wants to keep open the question of the self's exlstence as a way or exploring vIta I concerns--transcendence, spirituali ty, plenitude, love--that the novelist finds it impossible to Ignore. ' When I say that the postmodern is a 'dominant cultural condition,' I am description of postmodemism as an artistic style4) I'm particularly interested in this since the very concept of "man," "self," and "transcendental ego" has been one of the central objects of attack by poststructuralist theorists. t t's common now to accept the notion of the "death of the subject" or the "death of the author," but what Foucault, Demda. and Barthes have called for, obviously, isn't the death of man but the death of a particular idea of man: one which, as Foucault puts it, "gives absolute priority to the observing subject, which attributes a constituent role to an act, which places its own point of view at the origin of all historicity-which, in short, leads to a transcendental cons~iousness.~ By the term "postmodem," then, I mean to indicate a cultural condition, beginning in the U.S. sometime in the mid-1960's (possibly as early as the nationwide television experience of the Kennedy assassination6) when discourse evolved to the point where it using 'dominant' the way Roman Jacobson used St, as an umbrella term that enables us to descrlbe various phenomena, I don't mean to reify the term 'postmodern' In any way, especially since the novelist I will discuss here rarely if ever uses the term 'postmodern' himself. Kennedy continues to fascinate and incite the interest of a large public. The American Camelot endures, despite numerous and various revisionist historiography evaluations of JFK’s presidency and personal life. Conspiracy thinking underlies both the idealistic and the unflattering views of the Kennedy image and has proved to be a considerable factor in the proliferation of this cultural construct. However, very little has been written on the psychological, social and cultural mechanism which keeps the JFK flame burning. Don DeLillo is the only American novelist who transcends the mere sensationalist side of the Kennedy assassination toward a personal, yet historically informed, fictional analysis of November 22nd 1963 and its aftermath, in his 1988 novel Libra. Kennedy’s memory has been the subject of numerous inquiries, historical and fictional, and has attracted a great amount of controversy, which only speaks of the wide interest in possibly the most iconic American public figure to date. Few have attempted to understand and further explain this popular fascination with the Kennedy image and even fewer have interrogated its roots and the forces which propelled the 35th president of the United States to mythological status. Don DeLillo is the only American novelist who has tackled the Kennedy assassination beyond the readily available sensationalist angle and with the end in view to expose the intricate process of mythmaking and the role of the imagination and personal representation for individual and national narratives.

    Ordinary Madness: Don DeLillo’s Subject from Underworld to Point Omega Alexander Dunst ABSTRACT This article contends that Don DeLillo’s novels from Underworld to Point Omega are cen- trally concerned with changes in the structure of subjectivity under contemporary capitalism. The essay analyzes these developments from a late Lacanian perspective: as a shift from a dominant neurosis to what Jacques-Alain Miller has called “ordinary psychosis”. Over the years, a few of DeLillo’s critics have problematized a standard account of his characters as postmodern, sug- gesting that the author was in the process of crafting “a new kind of subjectivity”. However, none of these scholars have taken the prominence of psychotic protagonists in his novels as a starting point to analyze DeLillo’s fiction. Madness thus plays an important but overlooked role in the author’s oeuvre. After briefly considering DeLillo’s earlier writing, the discussion concentrates on three representative novels: Underworld, The Body Artist and Point Omega. Where Under- world focuses on paranoia, The Body Artist moves ordinary psychosis to the center of DeLillo’s imagination, a development whose social impact is explored further in the final novel. The article counters traditional conceptions of insanity as irrational and pathological with an emphasis on the structural role madness plays in DeLillo. This reassessment counters a critical tradition that often views insanity as a sign of deep-seated illness, or opposes pathology by naively romanticizing it. The conclusion situates the analysis in the broader framework of the medical humanities. Point Omega, Don DeLillo’s latest novel, is haunted by the breakdown of social relations.1 Framed by the evocation of Douglas Gordon’s video 24 Hour Psycho, the book follows Richard Elster, a retired intellectual hired to provide justification for the Iraq War (28).

G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model.     Rethinking History Vol. 9, No. 2/3, June/September 2005, pp. 337 – 353 CLASSIC TEXTS Don DeLillo’s Libra: History as Text, History as Trauma Leonard Wilcox This article discusses Don DeLillo’s Libra as historiographic metafiction in terms of the novel’s exploration of the relation between historical events and narrative, and its sense that there is no access to the past that would be unmediated by language. Yet Libra grapples with issues that cannot be fully explained by a model that stresses the ‘already written’, textual nature of the historical referent. Drawing upon Slajov Zˇizˇek’s reading of Lacan and the Lacanian concept of ‘the real’, I explore the novel’s depiction of the Kennedy assassination as a traumatic historical event, one that eludes symbolization and poses questions about the limits of representation. I argue that DeLillo’s exploration of the relation between trauma and representation gives us a powerful metaphor of the historical project itself. His focus has increasingly shifted of late toward the other end of the artistic transaction, examining the recep- tion processes through which artworks are perceived, assimilated, de- constructed, and reconstructed to suit the needs of individual viewers. DeLillo is particularly interested in characters that are drawn to visit the same artworks or art venues over and again. Driven by shadowy forces that they scarcely understand or control, these compulsive characters return repeatedly to a museum, gallery, or cinema where they can gaze once again at the objects of their obsessive desire. Although their obsessions are diverse, sometimes perverse, and al- ways imagined as private, these intimate artistic encounters all take place in public spaces. Such conditions provide the basic components of a scenario to which DeLillo himself is repeatedly drawn: a male predator gazes on a female spectator gazing at an artwork, stalking his prey back and forth between the presumed sanctuary of the art venue and the vulnerable world outside.

The project critiques postmodern theories of narrative that, citing their equivalence as texts, attempt to undo the distinction between histories and fictions. While such claims are predicated on the assumed irrecoverability of historical referents, I argue that we can only account for a network of stylistic peculiarities in these authors’ works as disruptions created by such referents. My first chapter, “‘Strange Even to Himself’: History, Characterization, and the Absence of Interiority in Libra,” accounts for a self-alienation unique to the historical figures in DeLillo’s novel. I argue that DeLillo skirts the epistemological limit posed by the minds of historical figures by folding that limit into his characterizations; that is, unlike the novel’s purely fictional creations, his versions of Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby lack access to their own interiorities.

    Chapter 7 Living and Writing on the Edge in Don DeLillo’s Libra Lucia Campean In 1988, a quarter of a century after John F. Kennedy was murdered, Don DeLillo published his ninth novel, Libra. In his alternative account of the event, its causes and aftermath, DeLillo brought together three parallel, eventually converging stories: a biography of Lee Harvey Oswald, a CIA plot meant to result in the near assassination of president Kennedy and the actual assassination of Castro, and the efforts made by a retired secret service agent to write a secret history of the assassination for the CIA. However, this American author’s career actually began in the early 1960s with a handful of still uncollected short stories that have not received much critical attention. The welcome publication of The Angel Esmeralda: Nine Stories in 2012 elides these early stories and instead gives us more of the “mature” DeLillo’s voice in shorter fiction. By reading these early texts in terms of their depiction of cities and urban spaces, I hope to draw some connections to DeLillo’s later fiction, especially Underworld and Cosmopolis.
