Salisbury Cathedral Archive Catalogue: Prebends Please note that the catalogue is in the process of development and will be updated periodically as new items are catalogued. Older document reference numbers have been recorded in the full catalogue entry maintained by the archivist. For enquiries please contact the archivist directly. Reference Level Title & Description Date PR series Prebends For further information on the history of prebends and former names etc, refer to Lack, A., 'Ross' Canons of Salisbury'. Where items are dated, the prebendary at the time has been listed in the name index. PR/AA sub-series Alton Australis 1200-1629 Documents relating to the prebend of Alton Australis, Dorset. Previously called Awelton and in 1291 Aulton in Southbury. Lack states: 'The Manor of Alton Pancras in Dorset was part of the pre-Conquest episcopal estates of Sherborne. By c.1150 two prebends were probably in existence. In the 1220s these were called 'Awelton arch[idiaconi], and 'Awelton', while both were called 'Awelton' without distinction in 1226. In 1284 the names were 'Awelton Sancti Pancratii' and 'Awelton', while in 1291 there was a distinction between 'Aulton in Southbury', later Australis, and 'Aulton in Northbury', later Borealis. From 1329, the holders of the prebends can certainly be distinguished and can be traced back to 1297 but for the purpose of the earlier succession in the prebends, 'Alton Pancras' is taken to be Alton Australis and 'Alton Archidiaconi' to be Borealis' (pp.64 and 87). 1 PR/AA/1 item Fragment of a Deed nd [late 13th- Fragment of a deed. From what can be made out from the remaining text and from what is written on 14th century] the reverse it seems that Muriel daughter of William son of Richard is setting up a chantry for the souls of her father and mother - the first three lines roughly read: know those present and those to come that I Muriel; for the soul of my father and of my mother...; sheep and four cattle and one bull in pasture.

I will begin by thanking my supervisor, Dr. Benedict Carton for his relentless enthusiasm and engagement from the very beginning of this project, for always asking difficult questions and pushing for confident responses. Dr. Rosemarie Zagarri and Dr. Jane Hooper made this dissertation infinitely stronger by helping to situate this story within the Atlantic and Indian Ocean Worlds. Their commitment and encouragement provided me with great comfort throughout this process. Stephen Kane read many drafts of this work and lent many hours of conversation to discussing it.

  • THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH and the ARCHDEACONRY of WINCHESTER in 1562 by A
PAPERS AND PROCEEDINGS 63 THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH AND THE ARCHDEACONRY OF WINCHESTER IN 1562 By A. W. GOODMAN N the autumn of 1561 Archbishop Parker issued a list of questions on the personnel of their dioceses to the bishops of the Southern I Province. Bishop Home of Winchester made his return to the inquiry early in the summer of 1562 ; it is contained, with others, in MS. 122 at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and I am indebted to the Master and Fellows of Corpus for permission to copy and print it. The Surrey, archdeaconry, under the title of " Surrey Incumbents in 1562," appeared in Surrey Archaeological Collections, Vol. XLV, 1937, with an introduction by Mr Geoffrey Baskerville and with notes largely contributed by him. The rest of the document, containing the cathedral church and the arch deaconry of Winchester, is now given to the world by the Hampshire Field Club. In editing it I have had the valuable aid of Mr Basker- ville's Hampshire notebook which he very kindly lent to me. Modern research has greatly reduced the old extravagant estimates of the deprivations of clerics in the Reformation period. In the five years of Mary's reign there were about twenty men deprived in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight; in the first eight years of Elizabeth about thirty. Under Mary marriage, not heresy, was the main cause of trouble ; under Elizabeth failure to take the oath of supremacy. The early years of Elizabeth were certainly an uneasy time in this conservative diocese and especially so in Winchester itself.

George Griswold, and of his granddaughter Susannah Lynde to Ensign Thomas Griswold, the Lord and Griswold families, in several of their branches, have the blood of the Lyndes and the Digbys. The two following monographs are memorials of these two distinguished families. Mr. Simon Lynde, father of Judge Nathaniel Lynde, removed from London to Boston in 1650. The family-records that he brought over, or received after his emigration, enabled his son Chief Justice Benjamin Lynde, and his grandson the second Chief Justice Benjamin Lynde, to compile the valuable notes which were the foundation of our Lynde and Digby investigations. He left these records with his immediate family in three forms : on the back of an escutcheon, in an old Bible, and on an old chart-pedigree. "The date of the former is 1740 [several years before the death of the elder Chief Justice]. The younger Judge was the antiquary of the family, and got much of his information from his father, who was living at the time the record on the escutcheon was made, so that what we know of the family, traditionally, came from the elder Judge." 1 a The oldest records extant are found in a Bible printed in 1 595- It 1 Private Letter from Dr.

PREFACE The Registers of St. Maurice, Winchester, are among the twenty Parish Registers in the Archdeaconry which date from 1538. From them may be gathered some points of the history, civil and ecclesiastical, of England's first capital city. In William I's time the eastern half of the city was occupied by St. Swithun's Monastery (the Cathedral), the New Minster, Wolvesey Palace, and the King's Palace on the south side. The north was divided into a number of small parishes. 1373144 In 1 1 10 the Monks of the New Minster, which had been founded by King Alfred, removed outside the City, and the site became the parish of St. Maurice, a Norman arch, pre- sumably part of the Minster, being still in the tower of the church. About the fifteenth century, Winchester went through a time of great financial depression and numbers of the small churches fell into ruin. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the parishes of St. Mary, Tanner Street, and St.

His life and works have been little studied, but they are broad in scope, and provide a fascinating insight into early modern religious and political affiliations and the role that manuscript literature of several kinds could play in provincial urban society. Using his extensive unpublished writings as well as printed works, this, the first full-length biography of Trussell, describes his career and the place of literature within it.
