Hunt ~^M~ The oldest continuously published newspaper in Bulloch County Thursday, May 23,1996 News Editor Opinions Our Opinion Partyers must use future restraint The news that organizers of the annual Playerz Ball will try to bring more order and control to the event in the future will help ease the minds of police, merchants and students. When businesses were forced to close early and students could not return to their apartments on the closed Chandler Road during the first weekend of May, the event had clearly gotten out of hand. Apparently, the crowd in attendance believed the police had closed the club Level One and decided to take the party out into the street in front of the club. In a campus community, wild parties thrown by college students are almost an everyday event. No red-blooded student would condemn anyone who chooses to have a party, but once a single group's party infringes on the community's rights as a whole, then there is a problem. The community's rights were definitely infringed upon. Police had to block off Chandler Road from Chandler Square to the entrance of In-the-Pines. Many of the students who live in the apartments on that road could not return to their homes. Some businesses in the vicinity closed up early out of fear of thefts and the loitering "TELL ME, OSCAR ... EXACTLY WHEN DID BILL GATES MOVE IN ON OUR LIVES LIKE THIS?" crowds. Many more individuals were affected by the inconvenience of the noisy crowd and the enforced detour. Perhaps we were fortunate that the event did not turn deadly.
