We will parade at the park, followed by our traditional costume contest. Families are welcome to go trick or treating in the neighborhood immediately following the judging. We would appreciate residents avoid parking their cars on McHenry Road, as we expect the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Department to bring their truck to the playground. They are confined to a brief period of great excitement in Baltimore, viz, after the riot of April 19, 1861, when Federal troops were attacked by the mob while being marched through the City streets, up to May 13th of that year, when General Butler, with a large body of troops occupied Federal Hill, after which Baltimore was substantially under control of the 1 Some months before his death in 1942 the late Charles McHenry Howard (a grandson of Charles Howard, president of the Board of Police in 1861) placed the papers here printed in the Editor's hands for examination, and offered to write an introduction if the Committee on Publications found them acceptable for the Magazine. Owing to the extraordinary events related and the revelation of an episode unknown in Baltimore history, Mr. Howard's proposal was promptly accepted. -

Downs Professor of Geography Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT An understudied example of an early modern suburb, Roland Park, Baltimore (constructed 1891- 1915) bridges the gap between the streetcar suburbs of the late nineteenth century and the tract suburbs of the mid-twentieth century. As an early modern suburb, the development of the Roland Park led to the formalization and creation of many of the social and cultural norms in addition to the landscape elements of today’s modern suburbs. This thesis examines these elements, by-products of the formation of an elite community, focusing on the regulation of Roland Park’s space in protecting it from the real and perceived negative influences of the outside world. Moreover, the thesis explores in depth the peopling of Roland Park’s built environment, a topic of great importance to the success of the community. Delgado and A National Park Service Maritime Task Force* INTRODUCTION For over two hundred years, the United States relied on ships as connective links of a nation. Vessels crossing the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific Oceans, and our inland waters made fundamen tal contributions to colonial settle ment, development of trade, exploration, national defense, and territorial expansion. Unfortunately, we have lost much of this maritime tradition, and most historic vessels have gone to watery graves or have been scrapped by shipbreakers. Many vessels, once renowned or common, now can only be ap preciated in print, on film, on can vas, or in museums. To recognize those cultural resources important in America's past and to encourage their preser vation, Congress expanded the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Among the ranks of prop erties listed in the National Register are vessels, as well as buildings and structures, such as canals, drydocks, shipyards, and lighthouses that survive to docu ment the Nation's maritime heritage. Yet to date, the National Register has not been fully utilized for listing maritime resources, par ticularly historic vessels. Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC) transformed industrial land along the Ohio River occupied by an elevated highway, sand and gravel companies, and scrap yards into a new riverside park and gateway to the city. Planning for the park began in 1986 with the creation of the WDC, a quasi-public agency, to oversee the development of Louisville’s riverfront. WDC held ten public meetings soliciting input on proposed development of the site that yielded a strong desire for green space. Subsequently, they initiated an international search for a design firm beginning with a Request for Qualifications to which 85 firms responded. -

CAPSULE SUMMARY BA-3041 Sh river House 607 Sudbrook Road Pikesville, Baltimore County 1893 Private The Shriver House at 607 Sudbrook Road is located in Sudbrook Park in Pikesville in the Third District of Baltimore County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, Sudbrook Park Historic District is significant as a small community designed and planned by Frederick Law Olmstead. George M. Shriver, a B&O Railroad attorney, was the original occupant of the house. Soon after the turn of the century the Howard family purchased the property and are responsible for the extensive additions built onto the rear of the dwelling. Bill Howard grew up in this house and later married well known movie actress Dorothy Lamour who would stay with her in-laws in Sudbrook Park during the Pimlico races. During the races other notorious persons, such as Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, would drop by for a visit. This Shingle-style dwelling, built 1893, is sited on a level grassy lot with a paved driveway among foundation plantings and mature trees and shrubs. The two-and-a-half story, three-bay dwelling has a random rubble foundation with raised mortar supporting a wood frame structural system clad with aluminum siding. The off-center entry has a one-leaf wood door with a one-light transom. The first story also features a bay window and a cut-away corner. The inset wrap-around front porch is set on brick piers and features wood Tuscan columns and square cut balusters. The first- and second-story have wood sash windows with 1/1-lights set in thin square surrounds with square sills.
