SCHOOL HISTORY Mercersburg’s proud history and rich traditions date back to 1836, when the Academy’s predecessor, Marshall College, was founded at Mercersburg. Marshall College moved to Lancaster, , in 1853, but the preparatory department of the college remained on its original site. It was chartered as Mercersburg College in 1865. In 1893, Mercersburg’s Board of Regents elected William Mann Irvine to lead the institution. Within months, Dr. Irvine renamed the school Mercersburg Academy and reorganized it as a college-preparatory school based on the Exeter model.

A small borough in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Mercersburg itself covers approximately one square mile with a population hovering around 1,500. Though it may be small in size, Mercersburg enjoys easy access to several state highways, meaning that its residents can easily visit other cities and towns. Athletic programs at Mercersburg provide a channel for developing leadership skills, enhancing collaborative ability, and building the character necessary to succeed and persevere. Each year, 84 percent of Mercersburg students participate in at least one of 27 sports, rostering more than 45 teams that offer varsity, junior varsity, and thirds levels. Summary The Director of Athletics is charged with providing leadership and direction for interscholastic athletics at Mercersburg, ensuring that our efforts in athletics are correlated to our mission, vision, and core values of the school. The Director of Athletics is a member of the Experiential Programs team and works collaboratively with other school areas and offices that include Student Life, Academics, Admission, Advancement and Alumni Relations, and College Counseling, along with external constituencies that encompass parents, alumni, sports officials, other schools and the general community.

Duties and Responsibilities ● Provide dynamic and visionary leadership in the development and evolution of the athletic program. ● Oversee and manage direct reports, including assistant/associate directors and the athletic facilities supervisor. Support and lead coaches to ensure the integrity and success of each sport through all levels, with a focus in providing a transformational experience for each and every participant. ● Establish and maintain a culture of feedback for all direct reports and coaches, including effective onboarding, coaching and mentoring, and annual performance reviews, to foster growth. ● Collaborate with the Dean of Experiential Programs and other co-curricular directors to strategically identify and hire faculty who contribute to athletics. Identify and secure non-faculty coaches as needed, as well as other supplemental employees. ● Work with the PGA liaison and others in the admission office on enrollment priorities and issues, particularly related to eligibility, post-graduates, and each sport’s status at Mercersburg. ● Work with the college counselors, particularly with the liaison in the college counseling office, on items related to recruiting and NCAA eligibility, as well as serving as a communications conduit for coaches and the college counseling office.

This can include academic, residential or co-curricular assignments. ● Oversee facility maintenance needs and assessments. Work as a member of planning teams for facility projects, including new construction and renovation. ● Prepare, execute, and balance a significant budget that provides equitable funding support for programs and development of people as well as meeting facility and equipment needs. ● Serve as the school’s primary representative in ​league memberships, regional affiliations​,​ and the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA).
