Bucknell Women’s Basketball Game Notes - 10 KELLY MAZZANTE ASST. COACH/RECRUITING COORD. • SECOND SEASON AT BUCKNELL • PENN STATE ‘04

Kelly Mazzante enters her second season as an assistant coach at Bucknell. The former Penn State standout was one of the best local players in history while playing at nearby Montoursville High School and came back to the area after spending five seasons as an assistant on the staff at IUP.

Mazzante helped guide IUP to its most illustrious stretch in program history during her five seasons as an as- sistant coach, all of which resulted in 20-plus wins and bids to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Her time with the Crimson Hawks was capped by back-to-back appearances in the Final Four, the first and second Final Four games in program history. In all, the team went 130-29 (.818) overall and 92-17 (.844) in the PSAC while win- ning three PSAC West Regular season championships, two PSAC Tournament titles, and two Atlantic Region crowns.

Prior to beginning her coaching career, Mazzante was a prolific player in high school, college, the WNBA, and internationally. She graduated from Penn State in 2004 as the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer with 2,919 points, a two-time Associated Press First Team All-American, and was the fourth player in Big Ten history to repeat as Player of the Year, earning the award as both a junior and senior. In addition to her career scoring record, she holds Penn State records for points in a season (872 in 2001-02), points in a game (49 vs. Minnesota in 2001), career field goals made (1,051) and career 3-point field goals made (357).

During her senior campaign, Mazzante led the Nittany Lions to their second consecutive Big Ten championship and a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, with an eventual trip to the Elite Eight. Shortly after that she was drafted by the Charlotte Sting in the second round of the 2004 WNBA draft. She went on to play seven seasons overall and won two league titles with the Phoenix Mercury in 2007 and 2009. Additionally, she played professionally for teams in Slovakia, Russia, Hungary and Italy

Few players in Pennsylvania high school girls basketball history have been able to match the numbers put up by Mazzante during her time at Mon- toursville. The Williamsport, Pa., native scored 3,217 points as a four-year starter, which ranked third in state history when she graduated. She led the Warriors to state championship appearances as both a junior and senior, winning the Eastern Pennsylvania regional titles both seasons.

Mazzante earned a Bachelor of Science degree in public relations/communications in 2004. She was a three-time Academic All-America selection, including Academic All-American of the Year as a senior. Bucknell Women’s Basketball Game Notes - 11 JIM REED ‘89 ASSISTANT COACH • SECOND SEASON AT BUCKNELL • BUCKNELL ’89

Jim Reed ‘85 is set to begin the second season of his second stint as an assistant coach for Bucknell women’s basketball. He carries 28 years of collegiate experience, including 14 seasons as the head coach of the Susque- hanna women’s basketball team.

Reed has tallied 202 wins as a head coach, including the second most in Susquehanna women’s basket- ball history with 175. He has mentored 18 all-conference players, including 16 All-Landmark selections. Reed coached the 2008-09 and 2014-15 Landmark Conference Rookies of the Year while he and his coaching staff were voted the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year during those same years.

During his time at Susquehanna, the River Hawks made the conference postseason tournament six times and were on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll twice, ranking as high as fifth in a season.

Reed’s first collegiate head coaching job came at Wilkes University, where he led the Colonels for four seasons from 2001-05. In just his second sea- son, Reed led the team to 12 wins, double what it had the year before, including a program-best 8-0 record to start the season. He went on to recruit and coach the 2003 Jostens Trophy winner for the women’s NCAA Division III Player of the Year and College Division First Team Verizon Academic All-American.

Reed, who earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bucknell in 1985, made his first return to Lewisburg as an assistant women’s basket- ball coach in 1998 and spent three seasons with the Bison. The 2000-01 team posted a then-program record 20 wins.

Reed began his coaching career as an assistant women’s coach at Susquehanna for three seasons (1989-92) before joining the men’s team as an as- sistant for two seasons (1992-94). He was also an assistant coach for the men’s team at the University of Indianapolis for one season (1994-95).

As a student-athlete at Bucknell, Reed played one season of football as a defensive back and lettered twice in track & field.

TAYLOR COLEMAN ASSISTANT COACH • SECOND SEASON AT BUCKNELL • DESALES ’13 Taylor Coleman comes to Lewisburg after spending the past two seasons on head coach Trevor Woodruff’s coaching staff at the University of Scranton, helping the Royals win back-to-back Landmark Conference titles.

Scranton went 57-5 overall and 25-3 in league play during Coleman’s two seasons with the team. The Royals won Landmark Conference regular season and tournament titles in each of those seasons. In her first season with the team in 2017-18, the Royals won the championship despite being picked third in the league’s pre- season poll, and went on to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The outstanding season included a 23-game winning streak.

Coleman’s second season on the staff at Scranton was even better than the first as the Royals won their fourth consecutive Landmark Conference Tournament title before advancing all the way to the NCAA Final Four. The season opened with an 18-game winning streak and closed with a top-10 national ranking.

In Coleman’s two seasons with the team, the Royals won two All-American honors, two Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year awards, two Landmark Player of the Year and one Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year accolades, and seven total All-Landmark Conference citations.

Prior to her time in Scranton, Coleman spent four seasons as an assistant at two other Division III schools. She began her collegiate coaching career with two seasons at Susquehanna University (2013-15), where she helped guide the River Hawks to a 17-9 record in the second season. That helped her and her colleagues garner Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year recognition.

Coleman followed her two years at Susquehanna with two seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, DeSales. The team went 20-7 and won the MAC Freedom regular season title in her first season, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament with a 20-8 record in her second season.

Coleman joined the coaching ranks in 2013 after a successful playing career at DeSales, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports man- agement. On the court, she was a part of two Bulldog teams that won MAC Freedom Conference titles (2010 and 2011), and served as team captain in her senior campaign of 2012-13. IAN WOOD ATHLETIC TRAINER • THIRD YEAR AT BUCKNELL • PURDUE '84

In February 2017, Ian Wood joined Bison Athletics as associate athletic director for sports medicine. Wood oversees Bucknell’s athletic training program and coordinates health care to student-athletes in each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity sports programs.

Wood brought more than 20 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer. Since 2012, he had been serving as director of sports medicine at Colorado College, a private liberal arts college that features two Division I athletics programs and 15 others that compete at the Division III level. Wood led a staff of four full-time assistant athletic trainers, two graduate assistants, an insurance coordinator and approximately 20 student workers.

A 1994 graduate of Purdue University, Wood went on to earn his master’s degree in exercise physiology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1996. Later that year he found his first opportunity to work as a full-time athletic trainer at the U.S. Military Acad- emy. In four years at West Point, Wood worked with the football, men’s basketball, , men’s , cross country/ track and field, and teams.

In 2000, Wood moved on to the University of Wisconsin, where he spent the next six years working primarily with the Badgers football team, first as an assistant and then as the head football athletic trainer. He also provided healthcare and oversight of graduate assistants covering the sports of wrestling and men’s and women’s soccer.

Wood in 2006 was named chief of sports medicine with the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program in Ft. Carson, Colorado. In that role, he provided healthcare for elite soldier-athletes preparing to compete in major international competitions, including the Summer and Winter Olympics. When he arrived at Ft. Carson, Wood took over a dormant sports medicine program and created a new, multi-discipline model based on a soldier-first philosophy. He worked closely with healthcare professionals includ- ing physicians, sports psychologists, dieticians, human performance experts, strength and conditioning and massage therapists. Wood also coordinated athletes’ drug- testing education with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Wood remained in Colorado but returned to the collegiate ranks in 2012, when he was named director of sports medicine at Colorado College.

Wood has also been an active member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). He was a member of the NATA’s Career Center in 2011-12, while also serving as his district’s representative to the Committee on Emerging Practices in Athletic Training. From 2013-15, Wood was vice president of the Colorado Athletic Trainers Associa- tion. He currently serves on the Colorado Masons’ Benevolent Fund Scholarship Committee.

At Bucknell, Wood becomes just the third head athletic trainer since the Bison sports medicine program was born in 1948. Hall-of-Famer Hal Biggs founded the Bucknell athletic training program and served for 38 years before handing the reins to Mark Keppler in 1986. Keppler was Bucknell’s head athletic trainer for the next 31 years before retiring in December.
