(Continued from page 8) life-sized façade of a Philippine nipa hut, the Philippine sun was displayed to commemorate the anniversary of the Philippine Independence Day on June 12, this month. Fully-packed We were surprised to see the theater fully-packed with screaming Filipinos as we went inside. A Filipino magician based in Los Angeles warmed up the audience, and in no time, the star of the show, Anne Curtis, appeared on stage. The atmosphere was electric, not neces- sarily because of Anne’s singing, but because of her energy, dancing to the loud music augmented by a display of bright flashing lights all over. Two male dancers performed by her side during the entire show. How do you compen- sate for the lack of singing talent? You turn up the volume of everything, the mike, the background music and before you know it, the audience would not mind if not notice the out of tune belting of the song. You would think you are in a real concert! By her own admission, Anne Curtis declared she is no singer at all. “I am an entertainer,” she con- fessed before her cheering fans as she apologized for her lack of singing talent. This fact she had proven time and time again by being the favorite of millions of Filipinos who flocked to her movies and watched her daily noontime show, “Showtime” in Philippine television. “I am just like any other little girl who flock during their day off on Sundays. In the study, published online ahead of print in the Journal of Chromatogra- phy B, researchers used sophisticated sampling and analytical techniques to identify VOCs from melanoma cells at three stages of the disease as well as from normal melanocytes. All the cells were grown in culture. The researchers used an absorbent device to collect chemical compounds from air in closed containers contain- ing the various types of cells. Then, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques were used to analyze the compounds and identifi ed different pro- fi les of VOCs emitting from melanoma cells relative to normal cells. Both the types and concentrations of chemicals were affected. Melanoma cells produced certain compounds not detected in VOCs from normal mel- anocytes and also more or less of other chemicals. Further, the different types of melanoma cells could be distinguished from one another. Noting that translation of these results into the clinical diagnostic realm would require a reliable and portable sensor device, the researchers went on to ex- amine VOCs from normal melanocytes and melanoma cells using a previously described nano-sensor. Constructed of nano-sized carbon tubes coated with strands of DNA, the tiny sensors can be bioengineered to recognize a wide variety of targets, including specifi c odor molecules. The nano-sensor was able to distinguish differences in VOCs from normal and several different types of melanoma cells. “We are excited to see that the DNA- carbon nanotube vapor sensor concept has potential for use as a diagnostic. Our plan is to move forward with research into skin cancer and other diseases,” said A.T. Charlie Johnson, PhD, Pro- fessor of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, who led the development of the olfactory sensor. Together, the fi ndings provide proof- of-concept regarding the potential of the two analytical techniques to identify and detect biomarkers that distinguish normal melanocytes from different melanoma cell types. “This study demonstrates the useful- ness of examining VOCs from diseases for rapid and noninvasive diagnostic Page 16 Asian Journal - (619) 474-0588 Visit our website at http://www.asianjournalusa.com June 21-27 2013 Re ection Light & of All Peoples.
