From Cynthia Buttimer, Team Priest December 2013 Dear Friends, As Christmas approaches and our minds turn to the ‘Little Town of Bethlehem,’ and all that happened there, I have come across an article headed, ‘If Jesus was born today Bethlehem would be closed.’ I have been interested, for some years, in the terrible troubles of the Palestinians in Bethlehem, many of whom have lost their vineyards and olive groves and fields to Israeli settlements. They have also been cut off from their lands by the huge wall that intersects the town with watchtowers on top of it. The priest of Bethlehem’s Beit Jala parish says, ‘If Jesus and Mary came this year Bethlehem would be closed. Jesus would either have to be born at a checkpoint or at the separation wall. Mary and Joseph would need Israeli permission to enter – or to be tourists.’ Now there is an imminent threat that a strip of Israeli settlements, built on 18 square kilometres of what was once northern Bethlehem, will cut the city off from its historic twin, Jerusalem. One of the settlements, Har Homa, is built on the area where it is thought the angels announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds. At the moment there is a narrow strip of land connecting Bethlehem to Jerusalem, but a new settlement, Givat Hamatos, will fill this in a number of years, and huge numbers of houses will continue to be built in the area. Israel says the wall has cut terrorist attacks and even if a peace agreement razes the separation wall the two cities will remain divided.

4

How familiar this sounds as we think of the Christmas story and all the political troubles then. Mary and Joseph were in an unknown land among strangers, and if they came back today I’m sure someone would give them lowly lodgings, near the checkpoint, or wall, or in a refugee camp. The great thing is that we know Jesus was born, was fully human, and came into a divided and evil world where the Romans held all the power. He came to turn that evil on its head, to teach us how to live, loving God and our neighbour before ourselves, to turn us away from all that is bad towards all that is good. Therefore this Christmas make sure your heart isn’t closed to Jesus, as Bethlehem is closed, be aware, as he was, of the many who have so little, and whose lives are incredibly difficult, and be thankful that the great love of God for each one of us came in the child of Bethlehem. Happy Christmas, Cynthia.

A message from the Baileys Thank you for all your cards and good wishes. After 17 years in Pitton we will miss our neighbours and friends, Jasmine, its garden and views but we are gradually settling into Florence Court and life in Wilton. Lydia and Bill are still in Pitton so we will be coming back to visit and perhaps will see some of you. Until then, best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. June and Ted Bailey 5

EAST GRIMSTEAD HOLY TRINITY Once again 2013 has gone flying by, and now we are at Christmas time and getting ready for celebrations! We have our Carol Service on Christmas Eve at 4.00pm. We had a packed church last year and it would be great to do the same this year. The service is followed by Hot Toddy in the church. PLEASE can we have donations of RED wine for the hot toddy and leave in BUCKBY porch by 22nd Dec. Everyone was very generous last year, as we were able to serve a second round!! Look forward to seeing as many as possible for the service. Holy Trinity would like to thank the flower ladies for their wonderful arrangements throughout the year. There have been many compliments on how well the church has looked during this year. Thank you all. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

THE GRIMSTEADS DEFIBRILLATORS The Parish Council is hoping to have two defibrillators installed in the telephone kiosks of East and West Grimstead. At the moment we are applying for a grant but we may have to raise more money. These machines can be used by anybody with no training necessary but we are hoping to have at least one class in West Grimstead Village Hall to train people but 15 plus people would need to attend the class. If you are interested in the training or have any queries, please contact Rosemary Clark – telephone 710216. 8

PITTON PRIMARY SCHOOL We came back to the new term in November and enjoyed a ‘trip around the UK’! This was an opportunity to develop the whole schools knowledge of the UK by moving around each country- themed classroom. During the day, the children learnt Morris dancing and Irish dancing, produced their own Scottish tartan, tried Welsh cakes and Scottish shortbread, listened to stories about Finn McCool as well as learning facts about , Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A fantastic day was had by all! Our Year 3/4 Football team, Year 5/6 Netball team and Year 1/2Rugby team all took part in Festivals in November, where they had the opportunity to improve their sporting skills and play a number of matches as well. Our Year 5/6 children also had their first competition of the year in their orienteering league. We were fully involved in fundraising last month. We supported Children-in-Need by asking each child to bring their teddy bear to school and donate £1 for this worthy cause. It was lovely to see the range of teddies that came to visit us! We also felt it important to raise money for the disaster in the Philippines and decided to support the charity ‘Shelter Box’. We agreed to hold a cake sale in the school and raised a fantastic amount which was sent to the charity to help with their relief effort. We also collected shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child as we do every year and managed to collect a fantastic 49 boxes this year. Preparation for Christmas is now in full flow, with the infants rehearsing for their nativity play, the juniors practising for their talent show and carol service and the school choir rehearsing for the small schools carol concert in the City Hall on 9th December. Finally, the FOPS Christmas Market will be held on Saturday 7th December from 2pm – 5pm in the school and it would be wonderful to see many of the villagers at the event.

Pitton Pre-School What a busy month we have had! We had a wonderful week for Children-in-Need when we all took part in a ‘round of round’ activities including making round pizzas, painting spots and playing spotting games. The highlight of the week was, as always, our teddy bears picnic! The following week we celebrated Diwali with the children by trying some Indian cooking and taking part in our own celebration of light. We also held a successful Open Morning on 14th November, enjoying a bug hunt and building bug houses in beautiful autumn weather. During December we will be following the children's interest in light and dark and will have lots of opportunities to explore our early winter weather, frosty mornings and sunny afternoons, as well as Christmas activities including our annual Nativity play. We welcomed 4 new children to Pre-School this month, and will be saying goodbye to our 2 oldest at the Christmas party as they are moving up to Pitton School in January – we wish them all the best for the future.

What to Expect from a Mastermind by Richard Parsons at West Dean ‘Thoughts are Things’ is how Napoleon Hill describes the outcome of a person’s strong desire to achieve a particular objective. In his book, Hill illustrates his methods by writing about the successful people whom he had interviewed and revealing a 13 step process which when followed with PERSISTENCE will develop the habits for success. The starting point is an idea which will inspire action.

In early November 1910, United States Senator Nelson Aldrich led a group of New York bankers at a secret 10 day meeting on Jekyll Island where the Aldrich Plan was conceived. The 1907 run on the banks had set the scene for a government commission run by Aldrich and a team of economists who had travelled to Europe where they were impressed with how well European Central Banks and the Bank of England appeared to be maintaining financial stability. The idea of the Aldrich plan was to establish an American ‘lender of last resort’ and while this plan did not receive the necessary political support, it did pave the way for the signing into law of the Federal Reserve Act on 23rd December 1913.

In Chapters 2 & 3, Napoleon Hill tells anecdotal stories which demonstrate why a BURNING DESIRE BACKED BY FAITH is an essential element in the pursuit of any endeavour. An electronic copy of ‘Think and Grow Rich’ can be downloaded from www.TheSalesEdge.biz/free.html and access to a weekly mastermind group is at www.sp5.co.uk/mastermind where, in this context, a mastermind is a group of like-minded people who share their interpretations on live conference calls which are recorded and archived. Please call 01794-341405 or send an email to [email protected] for more information.

Operation Christmas Child (Samaritans Purse) Shoebox Appeal

Thank you SO much to every one who has so kindly filled a shoe box for very needy children in Eastern Europe. Your gifts will make these children feel that someone cares and give them hope that the future might not be so bleak.

This year our boxes will help make up a load of approximately 10,000, that are to be loaded into a lorry on Friday November 22nd. They then have a 9 day journey to get to Ukraine where they will be distributed by local volunteers organized by people known to Samaritans Purse personnel. They are going to desperately needy children there and will bring so much happiness.

We are continually amazed at peoples generosity in these days of austerity. Your gifts have the potential to radically change lives. What potential! Thank you so much!

Down in the Amazon jungle This communication comes to you from the remote depths of the Ecuadorian rain forest, four hours travel from the nearest town, two of those down a piranha infested blackwater creek by canoe. The rich jungle is astoundingly beautiful and luxuriant, and packed with wildlife. The eagle-eyed Yasuni guides can spot a bird, monkey, insect or reptile long before we tourists, and they tell fascinating tales of the wild boar, caiman, giant otters and monkeys (of which I saw seven types). Birdlife is truly startling in its many forms and colours, and even the names are quite wonderful: laughing falcon, violaceous jay, snake- necked aninga, and flame-crested tanager to name just a few. The protected reserve is a maze of waterways and forest, with no roads, just unmarked trails, and all that can be heard are the sounds of the jungle. The income from the oil economy has enabled the indigenous Yasuni people to begin to develop some very special environmentally friendly tourist sites, but they find everything they need in the jungle, and have no interest in city life. Many have never been beyond the nearest town. They have, however, welcomed the new clinics and schools into their life, although some still believe in traditional cures. Trees and leaves are used as medicine: the curarina tree leaves are a snakebite antidote, the dragon’s blood tree sap is an antiseptic for cuts and bites, and larvae from palm trees can be barbecued or ground into a medicinal cream. Some trees provide rubber, others have cloth-like bark which can be made into simple clothing, while the kapok tree provides cotton for starting fires. Palm tree hearts can be eaten, some vines contain drinking water, and epiphyte roots are used for fishing nets, string and basket weaving. Their houses are simple round wooden structures, intricately thatched with palm leaves with a steep pitch for taking the rain away quickly, for when it rains it certainly does rain (and this is the dry season). The houses are usually built on platforms to deter wildlife, and different woods are used for their furniture and spears - they still hunt for fish and meat using some impressive weapons. There is so much more to tell; maybe in the next edition. 34
