POWELL FAMILY RECEIVES THE OLD TOM MORRIS AWARD Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Trustees Member Renee Powell and her brother Larry accepted the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s (GSCAA) Old Tom Morris Award on behalf of the entire Powell family. The award was presented to the Powell Family on Feb. 6, 2019 during the Golf Industry Show in San Diego, California.

The family also includes Renee and Larry’s parents, Bill and Marcella Powell. Bill was an entrepreneur and pioneering golf course owner who opened Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio in 1948. This was the first and is the only integrated golf course to be designed, constructed and owned by an African-American. Larry serves as the golf course Superintendent at Clearview and Renee serves as the PGA Head Professional.

“The Old Tom Morris Award means so much to our family, mostly because it recognizes what they have been able to achieve under adverse conditions and keeping a golf course operating for over 70 years. During World War II, our dad was stationed in Scotland, so to be receiving this award named for Old Tom Morris is such an amazing connection. Both of our parents would be thrilled, but especially daddy who has followed in the same footsteps of Old Tom,” Renee shared.

The Old Tom Morris Award is the GSCAA’s highest honor and has been presented annually since 1983 to individuals who, through a lifetime commitment to the game of golf, have helped mold the welfare of the game in the manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris.
