Verbum Dei High School The Jesuit Work Study College Prep in Annual Report 2013-2014

CRISTO REY LOS ANGELES

(L-R) ASB President Nicholas Spates, President Rev. Mike Mandala, S.J. , ASB Vice President Jon Parra A Word from our President

Dear Friends,

I am honored and privileged to serve as the fourth President of Verbum Dei High School. It is a blessing to work with the outstanding students, parents, faculty and staff, community leaders, corporate sponsors, and donors that make up the Verb family.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Bill Muller, Verb’s immediate past president, for building such a solid foundation on which to build the future. Without his vision, Verbum Dei would not be the success it is today. So, here’s to Fr. Bill Muller!

Rev. Michael J. Mandala, S.J. As many of you know, I am not new to Verbum Dei. I had served on its Board President of Advisors for several years before taking the position of Director of Community Outreach in 2012. So, my transition feels natural and organic. In addition, every- one has been tremendously welcoming and helpful as I take on my new duties.

On the occasion of my installation as president of Verbum Dei High School, I was asked to comment on my vision for the students. In part, I said the following:

• In 10 to 12 years, I want the students who are currently seated in the bleachers today, to join with the friends, benefactors and corporate sponsors that are sitting in the chairs in this gym to be significant supporters of the mission of Verbum Dei.

• I want them to be the civic leaders, the business people, the clergy, the teachers, the police officers, the corporate sponsors and the benefactors for future generations of Verbum Dei students.

• I want these students to join with you – our valued supporters – to make a difference in this world; that is, people who instead of complaining about the problems with the youth of today are people who are insightful and committed to challenge and support our youth to live up to their full potential both in their careers and in their personal lives.

I want to thank each one of you for offering to our students a model of generosity and dedication. Your involvement is absolutely essential to the success of Verbum Dei and to the success of the wonderful young men who depend on you. Thank you.

Many Blessings,

Rev. Michael J. Mandala, S. J. President

OUR MISSION: Verbum Dei is a Catholic, Jesuit, college and career preparatory, complemented by our corporate internship program, serving young men of Watts and the surrounding communities who are economically and academically underserved. We develop self-confident gentlemen who are intellectually motivated, spiritual, contemplative, and courageous in their pursuit of a more humane and just world. A Word from our Board Chair

My Dear Friends of the Verb,

As Chairman of the Verbum Dei Advisory Board, I am honored to report another very good year—admissions, jobs for our students, capital improvements and support were all as planned for the year.

It is also with great pleasure that I inform you that this is Fr. Michael Mandala’s first year as president of Verbum Dei High School. I have worked with Fr. Mike for nearly four years in different capacities—Board Member, Director of Community Outreach, and friend. He is a community advocate, a visionary, and a very good leader.

Welcome Fr. Mike! We look forward to the possibilities.

Even though our school has stabilized, we still face many challenges as a Board and as a Community to continue to excel academically and grow economically. With your continued attention, support, and generosity, we firmly believe we will continue to succeed.

I am pleased to share with you a few of the high points from the past year:

1. With the support of the John and Dorothy Shea Foundation, as well as other supporters, we completed the Capital Renovation of the 100 and 200 wings, as well as a portion of the 400 wing. These changes will enable us to continue our transformative results in the humanities, foreign languages, theology, and social justice disciplines.

2. This year, we also entered into phase three of the project renovating the weight room, locker rooms, and showers in the Athletic Facility.

3. The incoming class of new students is one of the largest we have had in the past 10 years. With 97 incoming freshman and 8 transfer students, our enrollment is now up to 321 students. Our goal is still to reach 400 students in the next few years.

4. Growth in Corporate internships for our students went from 76 in 2012/2013 to 82 in 2013/14. New partners who came aboard were Arel & Manella, ARES, Parson, Doheny, PATH, and Brandmeyer Gilligan & Dockstader.

5. The Adopt-A-Student Program is still doing quite well. Through the program, lucky participants adopt a student and bridge the funding gap between the actual cost of education and actual funding; $4,000 to $5,750 per student. Giving levels begin at $1,000.00 and go up to $10,000.00. The adopted students and their sponsors get to know each other, and sponsors see their aid actually reap benefits. Last year we raised $175,000 through this program.

6. We enter our seventh year of 100 percent of our graduating seniors gaining acceptances to colleges and universities all across this great nation- schools like, Stanford, LMU, UCLA, Santa Monica College, USC, Cal State Long Beach, and many more.

These are just a few high points of the year, and with your continued support, the Verb will remain the place where young men who work hard for their dreams can overcome many obstacles to achieve them.

I thank you for all you do and look forward to seeing you on campus this year.

With great appreciation,

Omer Simeon Board Chair 2014

Verbum Dei prides itself on providing a rigorous college preparatory education for young men who often come to us academically several grade levels behind. The chart above shows the percentage of seniors who matriculated to a two- or four-year college over the past four years, which is an astonishing 99%! The data also reveals that the number of students choosing four-year universities is decreasing. Although our students are still getting accepted to four-year schools at remarkable rates, more are choosing two-year schools strictly due to financial reasons: the increasing cost of higher education coupled with decreased availability of financial aid. Thus, as we look to the future, we must push our students to achieve higher GPAs so that they remain competitive for the best financial and scholarship packages.

CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

During the month of November, the Corporate Work Study Program staff holds its annual Supervisor Appreciation Luncheon. Students help host their supervisors on campus for an afternoon of lunch, sharing and raffles. In November 2013, we saw the highest number of attendees. With over 375 supervisors, mentors and students in the gym, a spirit of thanksgiving resonated with the participants. It was obvious that the men and women who become mentors and role models have a positive impact in the lives of our young men. In turn, the students of Verb help to shape a positive image of young men of color who are competent, respectful, adept, willing, and open to growth. As was expressed during the luncheon, we are thankful to the men and women who dedicate time to helping Verbum Dei students acquire skills, show them patience, and teach them the value of learning from mistakes. The Corporate Work Study Program is a fulfilling, win-win and innovative approach to education. And, with the support of our Corporate Partners, Verbum Dei is possible.
