FrFrFromFr om the Desk of Mayor Meyers…………

Hello,

Well it is again time to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall and winter. I hope all of you had a great summer. I love the warm weather, but I also love to see the colors of fall.

We will again have many great events and holidays to look forward to. Remember to always check on the Dallastown website for days when the borough office will be closed.

We will be having the Halloween parade on 10/17/13, which is a great family time and then Trick or Treat night is 10/31/13 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Anyone who would like a visit from our little trick or treaters should put their porch lights on to welcome them.

Then on 11/03/13 is Christmas in Dallastown, which is a great time to invite friends and relatives to town for a good time. They can see some of our businesses and purchase items from the vendors in the different locations around town. Also the Dallastown Historical Society will be open to see some of the items on display. The society is always looking for new members and items for our display.

We also don’t want to forget Veterans Day on 11/11/13. It is always time to thank our veterans for their protection of our freedoms. Many in our town have served our nation during war and peace and some have even given their lives to preserve our nation. All you have to do is visit some of the cemeteries in this area to see veterans’ graves who have served in all the many wars since our nation was founded.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

A NOTE FROM THE BOROUGH MANAGER ABOUT THE COMMUNITY PARK……….

Do you know where the Dallastown Community Park is? It is located right behind the Fire Hall on N. School Street. It has many uses, such as a playground, a dog park, a location for the annual carnival and other public events, fields for baseball, softball and soccer games, where you can go for a quick game of basketball or a place for the whole family to gather for a picnic.

Well, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! The Borough is getting frustrated with the increasing vandalism and lack of respect for the park. Just to name a few of the things going on: under the main pavilion there seems to be a constant gathering of youth that swear, spit, write on the walls, jump on - burn - bend the tables and benches, jump the fences, ignore the park hours and, not to mention, the endless cigarette butts and trash laying around. The Borough has to clean it up daily.

With your help, we can keep after the park and hopefully help the youth become responsible. If you see something in the park that should not be happening, CALL THE POLICE! If the park isn’t cleaned for all to enjoy, we will have to take much harsher measures. Please ask yourself, “DO I WANT THE PARK TO CLOSE?”

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOU HELP!

Sincerely, Connie Stokes Borough Manager

WINTER REMINDERS

SIDEWALKS – Snow/ice is to be removed from the sidewalks within 24 hours after a winter storm ceases. Properties at street intersections: please clear the snow that piles up at the sidewalk corners. This will help school children, the postal service and other pedestrians safely cross the street. We ask those who do not have sidewalks to follow this as well.

PLOWING STREETS – The snow plows will be plowing snow from “curb to curb” to remove as much snow from the streets as possible. This process takes time so please have patience and bear with us as we work to clear the streets as quickly as we can. When removing snow from your sidewalks, do not shovel the snow into the streets. ** In heavy snow storms, plows will be clearing driving lanes as quickly as possible and then will go back to work on clearing the sides/shoulders of the roads from curb to curb. Unfortunately, this sometimes pushes snow back on to your sidewalks which you may already have shoveled. If this occurs, we apologize for the inconvenience and added work that it may cause you, but it is essential to make our streets safe.

In the event of a Snow Emergency , announcements will be made on WGAL-TV 8, FOX 43, ABC 27 WHTM, WARM 103.3, 96.1 WSOX, WGTY GREAT COUNTRY 107.7, WYCR 98.5 THE PEAK, and the local newspapers.

NO PARKING will be allowed on the “snow emergency routes” when an emergency is declared. Vehicles that are not moved will be towed at the vehicle owner’s expense.

Snow Emergency Routes: The following streets shall be declared snow emergency routes: (they are marked) • Main St. • South side of W. Maple St. from Borough Line to N. Walnut St. • South side of E. Maple St. from N. Walnut St. to N. Park St. • N. Walnut St. from Main St. to Maple St. • S. Walnut from Main St. to E. Gay St. • E. Gay St. from S. Walnut St. to S. Pleasant Ave. • N. Pleasant Ave. from Main St. to Borough Line • N. Park St. from Main St. to E. Maple St.

Temporary parking is available at the following locations when a snow emergency is in effect: Fire Company parking lot, High School and Elementary School parking lots and Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Christ Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ parking lots.

Please know that anytime you have a concern or a question, you may call the Borough Office at 244-6626.

The purpose of the WAY is to increase public awareness about the importance of local watersheds to community health, sustainable economies, and environmental quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Participants can get to know their watershed and the folks and organizations who are working hard to enhance, restore and protect them.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. It is an incredible complex ecosystem that includes important habitats and food webs. The Chesapeake Bay watershed stretches across more than 64,000 square miles, encompassing parts of six states- Delaware, Maryland, New York, , Virginia and West Virginia- as well as the entire District of Columbia. Threading through the Chesapeake Bay watershed are more than 100,000 streams and rivers called tributaries. These tributaries eventually flow into the Bay. Everyone in the Bay watershed lives within a few minutes of one of those streams and rivers, which are like pipelines for our communities to the Bay.

WHEN IT RAINS IT DRAINS…

Rain is an important part of the nature’s water cycle, but there are times it can do more damage than good. Some of these problems related to storm runoff can include:

• Flooding caused by too much storm water flowing over hardened surfaces such as roads and parking lots instead of soaking into the ground • Increased spending on maintaining storm drains and the sewer system because they become clogged with excessive amounts of dirt and debris • Decreases in sport fish populations because storm water carries sediments and pollution that degrade fish habitats • More expensive treatment to remove pollutants carried by storm water into our drinking water supplies

WHAT EVERYONE CAN DO TO HELP….

• Properly dispose of hazardous substances such as oil, cleaning supplies and paint; never pour them down any part of the storm sewer system and report anyone that does • Use pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides properly and efficiently to prevent excess runoff • Look for signs of soil and other pollutants, such as debris and chemicals, leaving construction sites in storm water runoff or tracked into roads by construction vehicles • Install innovative storm water practices on residential property, such as rain barrels or rain gardens, that capture storm water and keep it on site instead of letting it drain away into the storm sewer system • Pick up after pets and dispose of their waste properly. No matter where pets make a mess-in a backyard or at the park-storm water runoff can carry pet waste from the land to the storm water system or stream • Store materials that could pollute storm water indoors and use containers for outdoor storage that do not rust or leak to eliminate exposure of materials to storm water

WE ALL LIVE IN A WATERSHED!!!

Our community is preventing storm water pollution through a storm water management program. This program addresses storm water pollution from construction, new development, illegal dumping into the storm sewer system, pollution prevention, and good housekeeping practices in municipal operations. We also continue to educate the community and get everyone involved in making sure the only thing that storm water contributes to our water is…WATER! Contact you community’s storm water management program coordinator or the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for more information about storm water management.
