2019 Hands-On at Otago Whai Wheako i Ōtākou Science | Humanities | Business 13–18 January 2019 APPLICATION INFORMATION Hands-On at Otago Whai Wheako i Ōtākou 13 – 18 January 2019 Application Information Hands-On at Otago Hands-On at Otago is a programme designed to allow students to experience a week of the Otago student life, living in a residential College, undertaking detailed studies and learning from some of the foremost researchers in the country. The environment is friendly, inclusive, supportive and interactive. Students are encouraged to participate fully in research projects, in a range of other University studies, and in an exciting social and recreational programme. There are opportunities for students to explore career options and to consider new and unfamiliar possibilities for study. Hands-On at Otago brings up to 400 secondary students to New Zealand’s oldest and most attractive university, an institution having an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Hands-On at Otago will be held at the University of Otago, Dunedin, from 13 to 18 January 2019. To qualify for the programme, students must be entering Year 12 or 13 in 2019. Teachers or principals are required to complete a section on the application form confirming that the student has strong motivation and the potential to excel. Applicants are required to write a page to support their application, which should include any information they feel is relevant and important 1 Programme: The Hands-on Week Each morning of the Hands-On at Otago week the students participate in a Research Project based in a University department. -

JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2013 Published: November 28, 2013 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2013 published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD) outlines how the financialisation of New Zealand media intensified as News Limited pulled out of Sky TV, and as lenders took 100 percent control of MediaWorks. In 2013, controversy erupted when it was revealed that a journalist’s phone records had been handed to a ministerial inquiry without her consent. The move was condemned by over 300 journalists as the government’s invasion of privacy was seen as a threat to media freedom. The government also passed legislation giving extra surveillance powers to the Government Communication Security Bureau (GCSB). This represented an institutional threat to journalistic autonomy. The report also finds that the bloggers and blogosphere gained prominence and influence in relation to the commercially driven mainstream media. In October 2013, there were 280 ranked blogs in New Zealand, and the top political blogs recorded high visitor numbers. The sites are all prominent headlands – Katiki (Moeraki peninsula), Matakaea (Shag Point) and Huriawa (Karitane Peninsula) – strategic strongholds occupied by Maori for hundreds of years. Archaeological evidence of occupation dates back to the 12th Century. Since the Käi Claims Settlement Act of 1998, all three sites are managed in partnership between the Department of Conservation and Te Runanga o Käi Tahu. The Crown also formally recognised Matakaea’s special cultural, spiritual and historic significance of matakaea for Käi Tahu, by designating it as a topuni. In the southern Kai Tahu dialect, The concept derives from the Käi Tahu tikanga (custom) of rangatira (chiefs) ‘ng’ is often replaced by ‘k’. -

Number of Electorates and Electoral Populations: 2013 Census Embargoed until 10:45am – 07 October 2013 Key facts The number of electorates will increase from 70 to 71 at the next general election. The number of North Island general electorates will increase from 47 to 48. The number of Māori electorates will remain at seven. The number of general electorates in the South Island is set at 16 by the Electoral Act 1993. In a 120-seat parliament (excluding any overhang seats), a total of 71 electorates will result in 49 list seats being allocated. This is one less list seat than in the 2011 General Election. The Representation Commission can now review the electorate boundaries for the next general election. The ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. Specifically, ATSC is working to coordinate television standards among different communications media focusing on digital television, interactive systems, and broadband multimedia communications. ATSC is also developing digital television implementation strategies and presenting educational seminars on the ATSC standards. ATSC was formed in 1982 by the member organizations of the Joint Committee on InterSociety Coordination (JCIC): the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the National Cable Telecommunications Association (NCTA), and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
