Kenkey is a fermented maize ‘dumpling’ produced by traditional food processors in Ghana. Ga and Fante kenkey have received research attention and there is a lot of scientific information on kenkey production. White kenkey produced from dehulled maize grains is a less known kind of kenkey. A survey was held in three districts of Ghana to study production, vending and consumption of white kenkey and to identify major bottlenecks related to production, which can be addressed in studies to re-package kenkey for a wider market. Questionnaires were designed for producers, vendors and consumers of white kenkey to collate information on Socio-cultural data, processing technologies, frequency of production and consumption, product shelf life, reasons for consumption and quality attributes important to consumers using proportional sampling.

The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, in addition to its socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. A population census is the most important source of data on the size, composition, growth and distribution of a country’s population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of national resources and government services, including the allocation of government funds among various regions, districts and other sub-national populations to education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users, especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, with district-level analytical reports based on the 2010 PHC data to facilitate their planning and decision-making. The District Analytical Report for the Tema Metropolitan is one of the 216 district census reports aimed at making data available to planners and decision makers at the district level. In addition to presenting the district profile, the report discusses the social and economic dimensions of demographic variables and their implications for policy formulation, planning and interventions. The conclusions and recommendations drawn from the district report are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence- based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programmes.

ABSTRACT A preliminary study of soil and rock samples from selected locations within the Accra Metropolis and its immediate hinterlands has been conducted to determine the concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides and the exposure to the population. Representative areas were selected based on the geology and population density. The results so far obtained indicate. that the exposure of the population living in the vicinity to naturally occurring radionuclides of potassium-40, the uranium-238 and thorium-232 series is quite significant compared with natural radioactivity levels in soils and rocks reported by a number of researchers. The highest concentration of radionuclides in soil and rock were recorded in samples from Dodowa with the lowest concentration in soils from Shai Hills and rocks from Weija. INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to ionizing radiation from a number of sources, namely; cosmic rays and naturally occurring radionuclides which are always present in the environment, and man-made sources due to human activities. Natural radiation sources include cosmic radiation and radiation from natural radionuclides in the soil and atmosphere; the latter constitute external as well as internal sources of exposure through intake of radionuclides by the body.

Pehr Advanced Issues in Urban Planning 27 April 2010 Page 1 of 21 Introduction Ghana, located in West Africa, was the first of the colonized countries in Africa to declare its independence. Accra is Ghana‟s capital city, and serves as the geographic and economic gateway to this region. The city‟s diverse economy is home to both local and regional traders as well as many international companies. Since its independence, Accra‟s population has increased rapidly. In 1957, the city had a population of approximately 190,000 (Grant &Yankson, 2003); today, the city‟s population is estimated to be over three million (Millennium Cities Initiative website). Accra experienced a period of rapid spatial expansion in the 1980s, and has been urbanizing rapidly ever since. Much of the city‟s growth has not been planned, and as a result, Accra‟s spatial expansion in recent years has occurred in some of the poorest areas of the city. This unfettered and unplanned growth has had severe implications for the population of Accra, and is most pronounced in the lack of basic urban infrastructure, including water and sanitation, transportation, education and health care in many parts of the city. In January 2010, Accra partnered with the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI) to become a “Millennium City.” MCI works with underserved urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa to help them eradicate extreme poverty and to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (MCI website). To fully realize a city‟s social and economic potential, needs assessments are conducted in many areas, including education, gender, water and sanitation, health and opportunities for economic development and foreign direct investment.

    TEMA; AFCONS Infrastructure open to more opportunities ahead of $20 million bridge construction on Volta lake- Executive Director Posted on November 4, 2019 The Executive Director of the AFCONS Infrastructure Limited, contractors on the Tema Mpakadam Railway Project, Akhil Gupta, has expressed optimism of his company partnering government to address the infrastructure deficit facing the country. He made the statement ahead of Tuesday’s Sod Cutting of a 20-million-dollar railway bridge on the Volta Lake by the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo. The 400 meters railway bridge to be constructed by AFCONS Infrastructure on the Volta Lake would be two and half downstream off the Adomi Bridge in the Eastern Region. Ahead of the project, the Executive Director of the company Akhil Gupta, spoke on the company’s plans for the 20 million dollars, adding that it intends to improve with respect to infrastructure in the country. Mr Gupta in an interview with Atinka Tv, said the impending project which would be very challenging, will give them the needed boost to bid for other projects in the country, judging from their high portfolio of major projects undertaken in the Marine, Road, Port and Construction sectors across the globe. He said the company is opened to the railway development in the Northern Region of the country as well as the rehabilitation of some major road networks in the capital, especially the Tema-Accra Roads. For his part, the Project Manager at AFCONS, U.V Singh said the 400 meters bridge project which would be completed in September 2020, would not only improve railway transportation in that suburb of the country but as well the country’s revenue since that stretch links to that of the landlocked countries including Burkina Faso.
