It’s interesting to note that the original festival of Shavuot was not marked by any of these things. It was a pilgrimage festival, an opportunity for people to travel to Jerusalem to make offerings to God as commanded in the Torah. Traveling to Jerusalem in the spring, when the apricot-colored walls of the Old City are at their most beautiful, has been a gift and an honor to for centuries.

Within our congregation, though, there are still far too few of us who take the opportunity to travel to Israel. Each year, we have a few families who take trips to Israel and a few teens who travel as well on summer trips and semesters abroad. Each year, these families and teens come back glowing with their experience, enthused and engaged with their Judaism in new ways and ready to see their faith in a new light. So what is holding the rest of us back?

Jessica Litwack, LCSW, a certified Gentle Sleep Coach, will provide parents with tools for helping their young children achieve sleeping success at home at a special program sponsored by Jewish Parents As Teachers (JPAT) on Thursday, May 1, at 10:45 a.m. in the May Chapel at Temple Israel. Refreshments will be served following the program.

Jessica will discuss how children’s sleep habits develop; how to figure out when it’s for a child to go to sleep; ways to create healthy, sleep-friendly habits and routines; and how and when to gently sleep coach a baby. There will be time for parents to ask questions about sleep challenges they face with their children.

Jessica Litwack received her certification as a Sleep Coach from Kim West, LCSW-C, (a.k.a The Sleep Lady®), who is a Certified Baby Planner through the International Maternity Institute and who is the founder of the online mothers’ support group, mamaSpace. Litwack offers parent support classes and workshops, as well as sleep consulting and intimate group support sessions. Prior to working in the area of family support, she was a Jewish communal professional at the Jewish Community Center, St. Louis Hillel, and the Jewish Federation.
