Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 2 Annual Report 2010-11 PRESiDENT’S REPORT

Our last month of 1st XI cricket was probably the most exciting I have experienced in our time at Premier level. To gain 8th position from 12th after the last round and to then produce extraordinary finals performances across the next three weeks, culminating in a that went all the way over three days and down to the last ball is a credit to the commitment of the playing group and game plan preparation of the coaching team.

The Club’s initiative to support Nick Jewells’ appointment as Captain Coach three seasons ago with a suitably skilled panel of coaches has proven invaluable in developing our players. Having a wealth of first class knowledge and general cricket experience within the panel is unequalled in Premier cricket and the benefits have in a short period of time produced an opportunity to challenge for the Premier Cricket Pennant and a CV rookie contracted player.

While as a Club we remain disappointed that we lost and no doubt the pain will linger (as it should) we cannot under estimate the enormous boost to the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club brand across a number of markets that our performance created.

Reinforced by the terrific support we received by members attending the Grand Final, as well as the “external” support via Facebook and the Cricket website, it proved we have a large silent supporter base across the Peninsula and beyond.

Our continuous improvement strategy is on track and evidenced by the on field development of a number of our pathway players emerging to challenge the status quo of established players under the guidance of a panel of first class coaches second to none within the competition.

A super performance over the season from James Miller a well-deserved Club Champion, hovering with form early season, he turned that around to again be one of the top competition performers and an example of how to professionally prepare yourself for the battle, congratulations “Funk”.

However while we were mostly competitive across the elevens, the performances of our 2nd eleven left room for a lot of improvement and questions over a number of playing personnel who were on the verge of 1st eleven selection showing a lack of application at times. If we are to challenge again for the Premier prize it is this group that we require to respect the competition and work harder to improve their performances and again challenge for 1st eleven selection. I cannot put it any plainer than it is imperative to our success over the next few years.

I acknowledge the outstanding work of our coaching panel headed by Nick Jewell, and assisted by Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf, Ian Brayshaw, Dave McClean and Chris Hall, with the support, coordination and direction of Cricket Operations Manager Mark O’Sullivan.

The best is yet to come....

Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is vitally important to our sustainability in Premier cricket. The strength of our partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria and the Regional Cricket Manager, ensures a well- coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential. To the entire pathway support groups, coaches, managers and scorers thank you for providing much needed support and direction. I also

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 3 Annual Report 2010-11 acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club.

It is hugely beneficial and important for our Club to have pathway coaches, Dave McClean, Andrew Cowen and Brett Hudgson integrate with our Club in development roles that assists the transition from pathway cricket to Premier Cricket.

The “Peninsula T20 Challenge” Vs the MPCA was an outstanding event and promotion of cricket for our region, I take this opportunity to thank MPCA President Stephen Morone and the MPCA Board for supporting the idea. I also acknowledge the many hours of planning that went into the event by the joint FPCC/MPCA organising group and thank them for their efforts. Both groups have committed to an annual event for a minimum of another two years.

Proudly FPCC provided approximately 35 volunteers on the day, mostly players and supporters, your efforts certainly went a long way to the success of the day, thank you.

Governance

Again this season the Board took on some big challenges, committing to a competition benchmark electronic scoreboard, as well as the installation of warm climate turf for the eastern playing field. Replacing the canteen operations team after many years of service and with two resignations during the season, due to ill health and work/family commitments, the remaining Board members took up the slack to ensure all the bases were covered with minimal impact.

Since the last AGM the Board has meet formally on 19 occasions and another 12 times informally to resolve issues as they arise. Attendance at Board meetings by Board members was an average 83%. I commend them all for their ongoing commitment.

The Club’s financial position, while stable, continues to confront the Board as an ongoing challenge to maintain responsible fiscal management on behalf of the members.

However rather than carry a significant surplus the decision to invest in our future players via the assembled coaches is a direction the Board is strongly committed too and believes is beginning to give the intended payback in player performances.

With the retirement of our General Manager Wayne Ross, I on behalf of all our members acknowledge his outstanding contribution in this position to the HEAT including his knowledge, experience and diligence in keeping up with the ever increasing reporting requirements of CV ensuring all requests were meet in a timely manner, and coordinating the pathway training and list management. His is also highly regarded by CV as a mentor / go to person for new Administration Managers over his time.

Wayne complimented his role with many valuable volunteer hours as well, thank you and well played “Rosso”.

It is now a pleasure to welcome onboard Glenn Davey as Wayne’s replacement; I wish Glenn every success in his new position and look forward to working with him.

Cricket Victoria

The future direction of the Premier Cricket competition is ever evolving and we must have the flexibility to evolve with it. One day format changes, T20’s emergence and the continuing focus of the longer forms of the competition, suggests there are opportunities for a broader group of players to get to the elite 1st class level. Congratulations to Scott Boland on his CV rookie contract elevation.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 4 Annual Report 2010-11 Volunteers

Most Premier Clubs are struggling for active volunteers to fill a variety of tasks over a week in season.

The installation of the new Scoreboards’ electronic cabling and associated works was led by Peter Buchanan and Darren Christy and set the scene for volunteer contributions for the season. They both made a major time and materials commitment to ensure the end product was what was required. Thank you both.

I also take this opportunity particularly acknowledge once again the contribution by all volunteers throughout the season, including;

The continued contribution by our Manager, Cricket Operations, Mark O’Sullivan, this seasons’ “Best Clubman”. “Sully” is highly regarded and respected by the playing group and Board alike. Well done and we hope there is many years ahead serving the HEAT.

The Thursday night meals team lead by Helen Hudgson, Sarah Walker and Karen Voelkl providing delicious fair each selection night is a great tradition and appreciated by all.

Another season of the “Heat in the Kitchen” luncheons was successfully driven by Mark Dunsford. I know we all thank Mark for his efforts in establishing a significant supporter data base and a successful series of lunches and outstanding guest speakers.

Bill Chernishoff who took on the mighty challenge of running the canteen.

Sponsorship

The Frankston City Council should be acknowledged for their ongoing support for the provision of first class Jubilee Park facilities. Local Government plays a primary role in the provision and maintenance of our facilities and we congratulate and thank Gary Woolard, Manager Parkland Services.

Thanks to our major sponsor BUILDSAFE. Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club over a long period; we express the Board’s gratitude for his continued support.

I welcome and thank Tony Stocker from C&S Lightweight for coming on board with valuable support.

The Frankston RSL, have also been long term partners supporting our Club over our journey.

Mark Dunsford, Financial Services Partners, Martin Scanlon, Rail Signaling Services are all special sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement.

To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and growing number of sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout Season 2010/2011. Your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Cricket Club.

We are all looking forward with great anticipation and excitement to the ‘HEAT’ continuing to improve in Season 2011/2012.

Dennis Prendergast President

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2010-11 General MaNagER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2010-11. The process of compiling the Annual Report provides a great opportunity to reflect on the many activities of the club from the recent season. I would firstly like to thank the recently retired Wayne Ross for his significant contribution to the Club during the last decade. Wayne set a tremendous standard as General Manager, and also contributed numerous other volunteer hours in valuable service to the Club. Best wishes for your retirement! I hope you now find plenty of time to visit family and watch the Blues. I look forward to attempting to fill your shoes in the role!

Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s support is greatly appreciated.

Playing Nick Jewell again led the club superbly as senior coach. Backed up with skilled support staff in Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf, David McClean and newly appointed Ian Brayshaw, the player group were fortunate to again have such a highly qualified coaching group to draw on. Their high level of skill and experience was even more evident during the 1st XI finals campaign, where a new high standard of preparation was set. It was an amazing season for the Club, where three grades all had the chance of playing finals cricket, however results still had to fall our way in Round 17. The thirds were extremely unlucky to miss the finals on percentage, after playing some quality cricket in patches throughout the season. After earning a home final, it was disappointing to see the fourths bow out in the Qualifying Final.

The firsts simply kept finding ways to win from any position. As Nick continued to remind his side, every game from the New Year was basically an Elimination Final. This proved to be correct, with the side sneaking into eighth position by just 0.017 percent after obtaining points from six of the last seven home and away matches. Their performance throughout the entire finals series was inspirational. To knock off the top two teams on their home grounds in consecutive weeks demonstrated the character and resolve of the playing group to succeed. With a little bit of luck in the GF, it all could have ended so differently…….

Arrivals The Club demonstrated its enhanced reputation within the cricket community, by securing high profile recruits in (left arm spinner from Carlton & Victoria) and Ricky Damiano (premiership keeper/batsman from Dandenong). They both proved to be valuable senior contributors in Season 2010/2011. The Club was also active in recruiting young and talented players from the local regions including young left arm bowler Matthew Christy (Berwick), Pat Damen (Frankston YCW), talented batsman Michael Edwards (Langwarrin) who received the FPCC scholarship in Season 2009-10, Leroy Haines (Baden Powell), Nathan Harford (Carrum Downs), keeper Nathan Martin (Heatherhill) and Matt Ryan (Carrum). Chris Cox also played until mid-November until being transferred by the NAVY to .

Departures Players who left the club following the 2009-10 season included Jeremy Beckett, Scott Broughill, Stefan Burnell and Davyd Stockman. Loyal wicket-keeper Danny Heylbut retired due to family commitments. The Club was also sorry to lose both Michael McClean and Wade Jackson to the Camberwell Magpies due to work/university/housing arrangements. Both players were long serving contributors at the Heat, with Michael playing 112 games across all grades and Wade playing 105 games for the club. Pleasingly, Michael was quick to re-establish a senior position, scoring 112 runs in the 1sts and 309 runs in the 2nds for Camberwell in 2010/2011.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 6 Annual Report 2010-11 Volunteers There is a significant amount of volunteers within the Club who deserve recognition for their contributions. Show your appreciation to them next time you bump into them! Thanks must go to Mark O’Sullivan as Chairman of Selectors for all of his time and commitment to his role where he was able to continue to make the tough selection calls to drive on-field success; to 1st XI team manager Ian Boldiston who continues to show immense dedication and passion for his role; to Martin Wylie who put his hand up to look after the 2nds and 3rds as required; to Adrian Coleman for managing the 4ths so well all season; myself as scorer and statistician for the 1sts; to Brandon Black for his role in scoring for the 1sts and 2nds as required; to Graeme Brewer for always being around the club to assist wherever possible; our Scoreboard installation crew led by Peter Buchanan and Darren Christy along with Wayne Barr and his team from Super Signs; to Darren Groves for his handy work to change the office layout, our hard working canteen staff managed by Bill Chernishoff; and our dedicated ladies who assisted with Selection Night Dinners and Afternoon Teas including Helen Hudgson, Sarah Walker, Karen Voelkl and Pam Clements.

Thank you to all who contributed to important on-field leadership roles, in particular Nick Jewell, Matthew Chasemore and Ben Clements (1sts), Leigh Lowry (2nds), Ben Cairns and Jason Wylie (3rds) and Brett Hudgson (4ths). Well done also to our curator Phil Regos who took on the reigns of managing the curation of the Jubilee Park precinct.

Board of Management Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), David Archer (Vice President), Glen Elmi (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Adrian Coleman (Secretary), Bill Chernishoff, Brett Hudgson, Ray Hudgson, James Keenan, Ash Walker, and Martin Wylie. Personally, it has been a pleasure to work with a great group of guys in achieving some great things for the Club.

Glenn Davey General Manager

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 7 Annual Report 2010-11 COaCh’S REPORT

As I sit here and think about what words I will come up with to describe Season 2010-11 I am consistently getting a feeling of disappointment. Not because we came as close as anyone could possible come to being a premiership player and achieving something this wonderful club is yet to experience, or the fact we had it taken away twice in one day, but because we were beaten by controllables.

4-210 batting first in a Final is something you would dream about, to lose 6-14 still makes me sick to the stomach when I think about it. We talk till blue in the face about the little things, partnerships, rotating the strike, 6th ball of the over etc etc I could go on. We paid little respect to the little things hoping that individual brilliance would pull us out of trouble as it has for most of the year.

Or we could talk about the 6 dropped catches and having Dandenong 8-160 chasing 224. But that would only make me feel even sicker to think about that.

With one round to go in the home and away fixture we sat 12th on the ladder. We sat in this position for 85% of the season. A wonderful effort to make the Final and be one ball away from being premiers, however this is reality, we are a team ranked in my opinion from 5-12th because we consistently make the same mistakes and fail to correct them often enough.

If we want the big prize then the ‘little things’ MUST be our strength and ticked off over by over, session by session which will put this group in a position to attack and win rather than fight for our life when these occasions arise.

We did have some pleasing results across the board and I would like to congratulate Scott Boland for being rewarded a Victorian Rookie contract. The hard work is only just starting now for Scott, all the work he has done to this point is just scratching the surface. Michael Edwards also represented Victoria at the U/17 Championships. As the youngest player in the team this will be a great learning experience for Mick and hopefully he learns from his time away with the team. Tanner Stanton also represented Victoria at the U/15 School boy Championships. These little stepping stones will hopefully set the boys on the right path to playing at the highest level possible, although it’s certainly not the only way forward.

Matty Chasemore had a terrific season, and again was rewarded with performance for all of his hard work. He is a terrific leader on the track. Matty has been rewarded for his leadership with the First XI captaincy on a full time basis from next season. Jack Benbow is certainly not the most talented player on our list but he gets the absolute best out of himself every session. For a young player he sets a terrific example. This season was a real platform for Jack to elevate himself to the next level. Tom Baron is another of our best trainers at the club. The improvement in Tom’s game over the last 12 months is purely put down to hard work and commitment.

The older brigade was once again outstanding at leading the team when we needed them most. James Miller’s season was one of absolute black and white. After our home and away match against Camberwell Magpies he was in the 2nds for most of the selection meeting the following week. He survived the axe due to his credits in the bank and from that moment he was a different player. James performances in the semi final and final were inspirational with the ball. His partner in crime Darren Groves continues to amaze all with his resilience. While perhaps not with the same pace, or length of spells he is still as dangerous as ever with the ball in his hands and commands the utmost respect from opposition batsmen. His spells in the Grand Final were as good as it gets. Darren also became the first player to play 200 games for F.P.C.C. and has passed 400 . Enough said really. Although he did think Aiden Blizzard is the best player he has seen…DEAR ME!!

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 8 Annual Report 2010-11 One who came back from the dead rightly or wrongly was Luke Walker. His record and ability has never been questioned, although he was challenged early in the season going back to the 2nds during the T20 period. The results we expected from Luke at 2nd XI level probably didn’t appear so he was left there for most of the second half of the year. To call him into the side for the semi final was a risk as he had not played for months at 1st XI level. However his resolve in the semi final then the final was the best I have seen from him. That’s the standard we expect from not just Luke but also all of you to get where we want to be.

We need better results from more players more often right across the board. Our 2nd XI results as a team and individually were far from acceptable. We had 21 players with 1st XI experience so I would expect the 2nds would be a dominant force. We need players putting pressure on at the top to make selection tough so we have many options we can go with. Ben Ashkenazi was one who made some significant ground, again he is a terrific trainer and gets everything he can out of a session. Mitch Drummond has shown some glimpses of what might be the next generation taking over from Groves and Miller down the track.

Once again we were able to recruit some significant players following Matthew Chasemore and Arron Crawford the previous season. Victorian Bushrangers number one spinner Jon Holland decided F.P.C.C. would be his new home, which is a huge feather in our cap as a club. Certainly Jon can be a major player in getting us to our ultimate goal. Ricky Damiano was a premiership player with Dandenong and decided on a comeback to premier cricket. Once again Rick chose Frankston ahead of other clubs and showed us, hopefully, with his knocks in the Final what he can deliver for us in the future.

To the coaching staff, I would like to send my thanks. Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf, Ian Brayshaw and Dave McClean thank you. I have no doubt we have the most credentialed coaching panel in the country. While it’s working well it can definitely work even better, giving the players the best chance to deliver. That’s our challenge. I have to thank Mark O’Sullivan. Again he did a power of work. Probably the only full time chairman of selectors in Premier Cricket, he plays a massive role within the club.

We have also recruited Chris Hall to the coaching panel and playing group for next season. A former first class player in the UK and a Level 3 accredited coach, Chris certainly rounds off our group nicely. Hally’s main charter is to develop individual players from the 2nd XI and have them pushing for 1st XI selection. If he is successful at this will also have better team performances as a result.

A thank you also goes out to the retiring Leigh Lowry. Over many years Leigh has dedicated his time to the club and last year took over as 2nd XI captain while still trying to play 1st XI cricket. Not an easy job and we say thank you and enjoy your family time mate.

To the committee a big thanks, probably the hardest working group in Premier Cricket. To put the sides out on the ground every week and to have the foresight to allow this coaching panel be put together is certainly not an easy task. The President Dennis Prendergast is a big support and I personally would like to thank him for his individual assistance he has continually offered me. Wayne Ross leaves us to take up the head of Carlton F.C. cheer squad and we wish him well with this new role. Certainly the new ‘Joffa’ will be a loss to F.P.C.C. In saying this I need to welcome Glenn Davey to his new role. Already he has found out I am a pain in the arse and require many ‘favours’. I look forward to working with you Glenn.

I look forward to the 2011-12 pre-season. There is only one way to be mentally strong, train physically harder than you have ever before, and make no mistake this is what we will be doing. Good Luck!

Nick Jewell Head Coach

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 9 Annual Report 2010-11 Finance

The club realised an audited operating net profit of $33,730 for Season 2010/11 compared to a net loss of ($21,372) in Season 2009/10. The result is heavily skewed by the $40,000 capital income received from Cricket Victoria as a contribution to the electronic scoreboard. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as amortisation, depreciation and adjustments. To expand, $7,840 of the listed income was still receivable at 30 April 2011, while $13,549 of the listed expenditure was still payable at 30 April 2011. The following explanations are provided for clarification of the result in some areas.

Income

Cricket Victoria As per other seasons, assistance from Cricket Victoria in the form of Distributions, Internet Grant, Junior Development Grant, and Administration Manager Grants is greatly appreciated. Cricket Victoria also assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host finals. Following the 1st XI making the Grand Final, the Club also received an unbudgeted amount of $4,000 in prize-money. Cricket Victoria was also very generous by providing a $40,000 capital grant as a contribution to the electronic scoreboard, along with a $35,000 loan. This loan is repayable over seven years with interest charged at 6% p.a. This commitment of $5,000 plus interest per year over the next six years is something the Board will carefully continue to plan and budget for.

Bar and Canteen This season, rain interrupted five days of first eleven fixtures held at Butler Oval. As a result overall, this factor reduced the amount of turnover in the canteen and bar. Further, limited record keeping in comparison to prior years has impacted the true disclosure of the result of the canteen. The revenue received in the canteen was sufficient to allow sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cordial to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge. Considering the downturn in bar trading due to the impact of wet weather, bar sales actually remained quite stable. This is attributable to hosting 15 functions in the facility during the season, an increase on the previous year, driven by additional advertising efforts.

Bendigo Bank Peninsula Twenty20 Challenge This initiative (as further detailed in the Annual Report) proved to be an exciting if not largely profitable day. As detailed in the financial statements, income has increased in comparison to previous years in areas such as Outside Bar, Bar, Canteen, Food Van and Event Donations due to the event. Being the first year of the event, we were over conservative with our purchases for the event (in particular an excess in bar stock), which diminished the overall profit of the event. FPCC and the MPCA have shared the $755 final profit evenly to be reinvested into junior cricket programs. With knowledge obtained from the event, it is intended that future events can be operated more efficiently to drive an increased profit for both parties.

Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the new membership structure, implemented at the 2009 AGM. With the membership fees now at a benchmark level as compared with other Premier Clubs, the players are contributing a closer representation of the costs incurred by the Club on behalf of each player. In addition, considering the amount of support the Club continues to receive off the field, we would encourage those supporters to consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially.

Social During Season 2010/2011, the Club continued “Heat in the Kitchen”, a series of four luncheons which included fine dining, high profile guest speakers (Austinn Jones, Steven King, Doug Hawkins and Andrew Rule) and the opportunity to reminisce with past and present friends and family. Organised very well by Mark Dunsford, these luncheons proved to again be very successful for the Club. They continued to build the profile of FPCC, while also generating a profit of over $3,000. In addition, the presentation night held to conclude the season was a terrific night under a three course meal format. It was again very well attended where $4,650 was collected.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 10 Annual Report 2010-11

Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors, in particular Buildsafe Housing Insurance (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), C&S Lightweight (Tony Stocker), Rail Signalling Services (Martin Scanlon), Financial Services Partners (Mark Dunsford), Karingal Optical (David Glennie), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), and Bell Building Services (Bill Chernishoff).

Expenditure

Facility As expected with the quality of facility the Club has access to, there is a considerable amount of expenditure to maintain its presentation and operations. However, no invoices have been received from our energy supplier in respect to electricity usage which has inflated our overall surplus. In Season 2009/2010 the electricity expense was $10,563. The Board is aware of the need to anticipate additional electricity costs next season to compensate. Cleaning and Hygiene costs amounted to $2,780; Materials and Repairs to the facility amounted to $6,291 including an expensive repair and service for the cool room and FPCC’s contribution to new carpet tiles; and non-cash expenditure of amortisation and depreciation amounted to $4,546 and $7,474 respectively. Depreciation has increased by $5,260 due to the large capital depreciable expenditure during the season of the Electronic Scoreboard. $2,591 was spent on advertising initiatives in publications, brochures and cinemas to generate awareness of our function room and facilities available for hire. This generated an increase in functions held as outlined above.

Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval decreased $1,483 to $8,717 for Season 2010/2011 due to the unavailability of the Eastern Oval after Christmas. To compensate for this, $1,091 was paid to Cricket Victoria for ground rental costs of Central Reserve, Glen Waverley as our alternate venue for the 3rds and 4ths.

Merchandise To commence the season, the Board committed to the purchase of hoodies to be made available to the playing group which added to the merchandise expense in comparison to prior years. Further, almost $4,000 worth of current merchandise purchases remains on hand to be sold. A new pricing structure will be implemented for Season 2011-12 with new package options available for players.

Playing The Club continued with a policy of two professional players, with Nick Jewell (Captain/Coach) and Jon Holland appointed for Season 2010/2011. In addition, the club continued to support an extensive coaching panel to support Nick’s appointment with Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf and David McClean continuing in their roles and former first class bowler Ian Brayshaw appointed as another specialist coach. Other playing costs also incorporated fees for physiotherapy, umpiring, scorers and country round expenses. Umpiring costs reduced by $3,100 due to the amount of wet weather during the season. Further, indoor practice and cricket equipment costs combined to $17,124 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources.

Other Retiring General Manager Wayne Ross generously decided to not take his full entitlement of wages as provided by Cricket Victoria, allowing for the surplus to be allocated to the Club’s first repayment towards the Electronic Scoreboard loan. Further, audit fees reduced by $570 due to new efficiencies delivered by the use of accounting software.

Day 2 - rain delay at 2:46pm. Play Abandoned at 4:10pm. Frankston Peninsula won by 2 wickets on first innings.

Coming from eighth position after the regular season, it was hard to find many judges that gave the Heat a chance to defeat minor premier St Kilda on their home territory at the Junction Oval. The fact that St Kilda recorded a comfortable seven wicket victory at the same venue in a quarter final 12 months earlier only supported their case.

St Kilda was dismissed for 163 off only 68 overs, losing their last seven wickets for 62 runs. The Heat had developed immense confidence from this outstanding bowling effort, but were well aware that this run chase would be difficult against the strong bowling attack of the top side on their home soil.

The Heat stumbled in their run chase, before painfully sitting at 8/153 just before lunch on Day 2. Matt Chasemore held the innings together and saw his side over the line with Scott Boland just after lunch. The rain soon closed in as St Kilda commenced their second innings, triggering celebrations for the Heat who had defeated St Kilda for the first time in at least a decade to setup a semifinal clash against fierce rivals Geelong.

Frankston Peninsula won by 55 runs.

Frankston Peninsula carried out an amazing spell of bowling after Tea on Day Two of their semi final against Geelong to amazingly secure a spot in the 2010/11 Premier Cricket Grand Final. After reaching the final eight on percentage by 0.017% following their Round 17 defeat of Northcote, Frankston Peninsula then defeated the top two teams in the quarter final (St Kilda – 1st) and semi final (Geelong – 2nd) to claim their spot in the final. It was an enthralling contest at the Geelong Cricket Ground, where momentum constantly ebbed and flowed to each side, where Frankston Peninsula came out victors by 55 runs.

After targeting a total of at least 250 to be competitive in the semi final, the Heat fell just short of that score at 10/246 off 99.1 overs. However, the Heat were quite confident overnight that the pressure on second placed Geelong to chase this total on their home ground in front of their home fans would see the Heat well and truly into this match. In an even batting performance, Dew, Clements, Chasemore, Walker and Nankervis all chipped in with patient innings to calmly build a defendable total.

Holland was outstanding, bowling three excellent spells off left arm off spin to finish with 4/57 off 24.5 overs. Despite not finding early wickets, Miller struck three crucial blows post tea, to claim 3/34 off 13 overs. Boland encouraged false strokes to find 2/45 off 14 overs, with Darren Groves taking 1/33 off his 15 overs.

Heat president Dennis Prendergast praised his players, saying "This is a team of fighters. It was one of the most amazing performances I have seen and I have been around for a long time. We knew that one wicket after tea would be a game-changer and James Miller got that wicket and we went from there."

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 34 Annual Report 2010-11 Brad Beitzel and Paul Amy report on a thrilling Premier Cricket final, as published in the Frankston Standard Leader

The Frankston Peninsula players left the Melbourne University ground with their hearts in their boots after falling to Dandenong in an utterly engrossing Premier Cricket grand final that concluded on Sunday 27 March.

A tense crowd had watched the first-innings result unfold in the first 20 minutes of play on Sunday as Dandenong resumed at 9/213.

In an exhilarating passage of play, and No 11 Justin Butterfield put on 32 for the last wicket to edge the Panthers past a gallant Heat in the first innings. Dandy made 226 in reply to 224 and the match looked decided.

But there was even greater drama to come. Trying to reverse the first innings result, Frankston Peninsula declared at 8/138 off 28 overs in its second dig, leaving Dandy to get 136 in 57 overs. The Panthers got the staggers, losing wickets regularly. Last pair Darren Pattinson and Butterfield were left to negotiate the last seven overs of the match and they did, cruelly denying the Heat a first premiership.

James Pattinson is making his name as a bowler of ferocious pace but he batted splendidly for 59 not out, taking charge of the lower-order. His half-century went with opener Tom Donnell’s outstanding 83.

This grand final took a sudden turn early on Saturday when the Heat, picking up at 5/213, collapsed to be all out for 224.

Test man (5/ 52) spreadeagled the tail with the second new ball as Frankston Peninsula finished with quite a few less than it could have expected. On day one Heat captain Matt Chasemore won the toss and decided to face what must have been the best attack in a Premier final in five decades.

There was Australian Test quick Siddle, English Test paceman Darren Pattinson (2/30), state quick James Pattinson (3/49), as well as the emerging Justin Butterfield and consistent Premier performer Brent Fairbanks.

Opener Ricky Damiano attacked the bowling, scooting to 47 before being LBW to Darren Pattinson. The Heat were wobbling at 4/77. Enter 2010 AFL grand final goal umpire Luke Walker, who joined former Victorian opener Nick Jewell at the creases.

Walker had a battle with Siddle and looked to be buckling but the former captain kept his nerve and played some attractive strokes as he went to a top score of 71. Jewell, disregarding some blows to the body from the pacemen, dug in for 63 as they built a valuable partnership of 133. Jewell went to stumps on 61 but he was one of three batsmen to fall to Siddle next morning.

Dandenong’s innings started horribly, with opener Nick Thomas dismissed for a second-ball duck by veteran Darren Groves. It was his third blob in the finals series. Donnell, however, was brick-wall solid as he produced his highest score for the season.

But when he was was judged LBW to James Miller, it sparked a wicked collapse of 4/4. James Pattinson watched on from the other end. But he gained support when Fairbanks strode in and cracked 24 from 32 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes.

Butterfield came in at No 11 but looked more like a middle-order player and was 12 not out at stumps on day two as the match headed for the tightest of finishes.

But nobody could have predicted that the last hour of Sunday would match the drama of the first. It was a classic game of Premier Cricket, but unfortunately, the result didn’t fall the way of the Heat.

Harford did well with the ball to secure 4/23 as Carlton compiled a competitive total of 8/169. The Heat paced their run chase well with Salerni, Cassano, Cox and Ryan all adding useful totals to the scoreboard. However it was left to some last over heroics from Leroy Haines, who struck 11 not out to secure victory off the final .

Fitzroy Doncaster won by 3 runs.

Fitzroy Doncaster won the Kookaburra One-Day premiership in the Fourths, defeating Frankston Peninsula by just 3 runs at the Butler Oval. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the curator Phil Regos and the club, play began around 1pm, the match reduced to a 37-over contest. Fitzroy Doncaster, batting first, scored 6/164 from their 37 overs, with Cameron Tonkin (44) and Jayme Gottliebsen (40) top-scoring.

In reply, Joel Wylie looked dangerous for the Heat with a hard-hit 47, adding 43 with Chris Cox (15) for the third wicket and 35 with skipper Brett Hudgson (17), but from 3/113, the Lions fought back, with right-arm quick Michael Cook (3/16 off 8) taking vital wickets. 17 were needed off the last 2 overs and 8 off the last, but the task proved beyond Frankston Peninsula, finishing on 161, just three short. Cook was adjudged the Kookaburra Player-of-the-Final.

Camberwell Magpies won on first innings.

After finishing third on the ladder to obtain a home final at the Butler Oval, the fourths were disappointing in their convincing quarter final loss against Camberwell Magpies.

Winning the toss and batting first, the Heat were quickly in trouble, falling to 2/4, 4/17, 6/35 and 8/39. It took strong batting efforts from Juvaunie Gayle (46 off 99 balls) and Pat Damen (25 off 73 balls) to add some respectability to the total, as the pair added 48 for the ninth wicket. They were the only batsmen to reach double figures, with the Heat finally reduced to an uncompetitive 10/99 off 43.1 overs.

In reply, the Magpies didn’t fair much better, falling to 3/11 as Gayle and Matt Ryan picked up early wickets. The innings was soon back on track, with Camberwell Magpies sitting at 5/183 off 53 overs at stumps on Day One with a lead of 84 runs. The Heat used eight bowlers during the innings, with Gayle (1/34), Ryan (2/36), Damen (1/23) and Waldron (1/15) all collecting wickets.

Feeling there was little hope of devising a reverse outright result, the Heat conceded victory to the Magpies following the first day of play. It was an unfortunate result for the Heat after finishing third on the ladder, where they couldn’t improve on the solid results of the past three seasons in the fourths (2007-08 – third, 2008-09 – second, 2009-10 – fifth).

CLUB CHAMPION

James Miller is the Club Champion of the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club for Season 2010-11. “Funk” scored 260 runs and took 48 wickets along with 12 catches in a tremendous all round effort. Matt Chasemore was a close second place in the Club Champion points tally, after another fantastic season to back up his Club Champion award last year. Matt compiled 594 runs and 18 wickets as a key contributor to the 1st XI this season.

James’ highest score with the bat was 61 made in Round 15 against Prahran. His best figures with the ball was 6/54 – taken in the first innings of the Grand Final where he wrecked the Dandenong batting order to almost see the Heat over the line. James played a key role in the finals series, using his skill and experience to capture 15 wickets in the three matches.

This is the second Club Champion award for James, after being awarded the shield in Season 2008-09 following his season of 278 runs and 42 wickets.

Since debuting in the 1st XI in 1998-99, James has played 137 matches as a valuable all-rounder. He has made 2805 runs at an average of 25.50 and taken 262 wickets at an average of 21.30.

JAMES MILLER

James Miller complimented his Club Champion award with a narrow victory in the Neal Thompson Medal vote count. After a slow start to the season, James polled votes in 10 of the last 12 games of the home and away season, including three best on ground performances, to finish with 19 votes. He was two votes clear of 2009/2010 Thompson Medalist Brett Hudgson on 17 votes, and 3 votes clear of club stalwart and two time Thompson Medalist Darren Groves on 16 votes.

The Thompson Medal is voted upon by the opposition captains of each grade following every round. Amazingly, they were able to recognize 50 separate FPCC players throughout the season’s voting.

This is the fourth season that James has been awarded the Thompson Medal, after receiving the award in 2001/2002, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009.

Jack was a standout contender for Cameron Award for Season 2010-2011. This award recognizes the most outstanding Under 21 player within the club in honour of a past player from Frankston Cricket Club who tragically lost their life at a young age. After playing his first game for the club in Season 2006/2007 after coming through the pathways system, Jack has developed into a talented senior player with regular valuable contributions to the 1st XI last season. While competing with Victorian representative Jon Holland for a place in the senior side, Jack managed to secure 20 wickets at a low average of 13.95 to also collect the 1st XI bowling award. Jack has been recognized as getting the absolute best out of himself from every training session. For a young player he sets a terrific example to his team mates.

Wills Award – MaRK O’SULLiVaN

Mark O’Sullivan has been recognized as the Best Clubman for Season 2010/2011, receiving the Bill & Nance Wills Award. “Sully” is highly regarded and respected by the playing group, coaches and Board alike. The Under 16’s were superb, jelled together beautifully and showed tremendous fighting qualities to finish second in the State. Four batsmen (Will Crowder [305], Jake Smart [150], Jake Prosser [106] and Robbie Salerni [101]) scored in excess of 100 runs while Ben Ashkenazi spear-headed the attack and had great support from Will Crowder - both of whom took 9 wickets – Matt Prosser, Tom Feldgen and Billy Humphrey. Their performances were a great testament to the work done by Andrew and Bart in the lead-up and during the Championships.

It was however a disappointing Pathway for the Under 14’s and Under 18’s. The weather in the lead-up was far from ideal with both Training Sessions and Trial Matches affected, in fact the Under 18’s had no lead-up matches and this showed in their performances.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 48 Annual Report 2010-11 Frankston peninsula cricket CLUB scholarship

The Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Scholarship for the Pathways Player of the Series was awarded to Will Crowder whose performances were phenomenal – 305 runs @ 76.25 and 9 wickets @ 15.11 in the Under 16 side. The Scholarship entitles Will to train with Frankston Peninsula throughout 2011-2012 and participate in any coaching activities run by the Club. Of course, it is our hope that Will decides to accept the Club’s invitation to play with it next season. The Scholarship also covers playing and training uniforms along with Membership Fees for Season 2011-12.

Bill foley education & cricket scholarship

The Bill Foley Education Scholarship perpetuates the memory of Bill Foley, long-time stalwart of the Cricket community throughout the State of Victoria and in particular in Cricket Administration with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association, the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club and the South East Country Region. The Scholarship, valued at $10,000 a year, is to assist the recipient with education and cricket costs. The Scholarship is to be awarded annually – for at least five years.

This was a wonderful gesture by the late Bill Foley and the Foley Family.

The Bill Foley Education and Cricket Scholarship for 2011 was awarded to Mitch Drummond. Following the delivery of a high quality application and subsequent interview, Mitch proved to be a very worthy recipient of the scholarship. Mitch has developed into an established opening bowler in the Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 2nd XI, securing 22 wickets at 19.32 from 16 games in 2010/11.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 49 Annual Report 2010-11 Bushrangers rookie contract to scott boland

From the Frankston Standard Leader - written by Brendan Casey

Scott Boland didn’t realise his potential as a cricketer until his coach at Parkdale, Cameron Atkins, recommended he try out for Premier Club Frankston Heat. Atkins obviously has a good eye for talent. In late June, Boland received a Victorian rookie contract for the 2011/2012 season.

‘‘Cam used to play at Frankston and he said I should head down there so I did and I really liked it,’’ Boland said. ‘‘I started off in the twos and gradually worked my way into the ones. From there I got asked to train at the Academy and got to play in some Victorian representative U23 games, which was all great experience.’’

Boland bowls at a sharp pace but he went to Frankston more as a batsman. Heat coach Nick Jewell helped him develop his bowling. ‘‘I tried to work on being an all-rounder, but my bowling took over to become much better than my batting, which has worked out well now,’’ Boland said. ‘‘Nick has definitely been one of the biggest influences on my career so far.’’

Under Jewell’s guidance, he has blossomed into a First XI force in the past two years, taking 33 wickets at 25.3 last season and 26 at 24.0 in 2009/10. The training program with the Academy has Boland training four days a week during the offseason including gym, pilates and running sessions.

With the contract formally signed, Boland and the rest of the Victorian squad will formally begin pre-season skills training in early July. Boland was a keen cricketer from an early age, playing his first competitive game of Under-12 cricket for Parkdale juniors when he was six. ‘‘The other kids were a lot bigger, but I just wanted to get out there,’’ he said. ‘‘I loved the game. It wasn’t until two years ago that I actually thought I might be able to make something of cricket.’’

The rookie contract is a fine achievement for the 22-year-old but he knows there is more to do to play first-class cricket. ‘‘I am very happy to get a place (on the rookie list), but hopefully it’s just a start of bigger things to come,’’ he said. ‘‘I just have to keep training and improving and if I’m lucky I may get that chance in the next couple of years.’’

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 50 Annual Report 2010-11 Bendigo bank Peninsula t20 challenge

On Sunday 23 January 2011, Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club hosted the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association in Senior and Under 18 Twenty20 matches. The event was staged to promote the highest level of cricket on the Mornington Peninsula, with all proceeds from the day to be allocated to junior cricketer development within the region.

To accompany the on field action, patrons were entertained by loud music, a jumping castle, ground announcers, player profiles and photos on the electronic scoreboard, plenty of food and refreshments, Milo In2Cricket junior players, and 3RPP local radio. It was estimated that at least 1,500 people were in attendance at the peak of the event.

Frankston Peninsula also hosted a Heat in the Kitchen Luncheon, where 125 guests were highly entertained by the life stories of guest speaker and former Footscray VFL champion, Doug Hawkins. During the luncheon, young Frankston Peninsula player Mitch Drummond was awarded the Bill Foley Scholarship, which will provide a $10,000 contribution to Mitch’s tertiary education.

The Heat were victorious in both the Under 18 and Senior fixtures, where they both defended large first innings totals. Frankston Peninsula President Dennis Prendergast spoke at the after match presentation on the day, praising the work of the huge team of volunteers from the MPCA and Frankston Peninsula who worked hard to ensure the day ran seamlessly. He also thanked the contributions of the event sponsors which included Bendigo Bank, Saxon Sports, SC Sports Coaching, Premier Waste and Frankston Sports Injury Clinic.

Based on the success of this event, it is planned that the MPCA will take on Frankston Peninsula in an annual match as preparation for the MPCA country week campaign each year and to continue to build the relationship between both groups.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 51 Annual Report 2010-11 Electronic scoreboard

In July 2010, Frankston Peninsula received notification from Cricket Victoria that the funding submission for a new Electronic Scoreboard had been approved. This provided the club with access to a $40,000 Capital Grant from Cricket Victoria, and a further $35,000 loan from Cricket Victoria to use towards the project. With support from Wayne Barr and his team at Super Signs, the A.H. Butler Oval is now home to an elite Electronic Scoreboard of the highest standard in Victorian Premier Cricket.

The display options are very flexible, allowing for functions such as: standard cricket scoreboard, detailed cricket scoreboard, bowling display, run rate target display, full screen sponsor advertising, full screen player profile images, full screen graphic animations, scheduled scrolling text and much more. After toiling hard on the manual scoreboard since its construction in 1994, long time operators such as Glenn Davey, Wayne Ross and Brandon Black have since enjoyed the luxury of updating scores with a push of a button! The scoreboard has since become somewhat of a flagship model for Super Signs, with many prospective clients coming to view the potential of our scoreboard before also committing to their own purchase.
