I wonder if Dredd realizes the irony that he himself is about as close to a robot as a human being could ever be? With the Justice Department under-strength, Chief Judge MacGruder authorises the deployment of ten robotic judges to the streets. However, as Judge Dredd himself predicts, the robots soon begin to malfunction and unleash untempered judgement upon Mega-City One. The main body of this book is taken up by Wagner's 'Mechanismo' storyline which, with AD's signature mixture of brutality and dark humour, explores the idea that a machine shouldn't be able to sit in judgement over human beings. What I liked most about this was seeing Dredd's reaction to the harsh behaviour of the robot Judges who are, in fact, programmed to emulate his own personal style. There's also a short extra story, the one by Grant, tacked onto the end of the book, which features a street thug out to make a reputation for himself by attempting to kill Judge Dredd. It's neither big nor clever and felt like a real step down from the far more engaging Mechanismo story. May 17, Jared Ball rated it really liked it. Big robots, bigger guns and a lot of needless violence. Judge Dredd: Mechanismo book has amazing art and a Judge Dredd: Mechanismo dark comedic vibe at least in my opinion. For those who root for Judge Dredd: Mechanismo in Robocop, Number 5 in this book will show you how its done. Dec 23, Declan rated it it was ok. The art is fine though not always as quirky as past titles. There is a little too much of the same thing going on throughout. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Anderson is still reeling from the suicide of her closest friend when she gets to go to Tibet via Russia to find the source of the outbreak of psychic crimes. We have the titular Shamballa - which takes on Eastern mysticism and the nature of sacrifice as Anderson travels to Tibet to find the source of a worldwide epidemic of supernatural events. Unlike the collected works of Judge Dredd, which run chronologically, this collection dips in and out of a number of ongoing narratives and references to previous — and as yet unprinted — stories can prove frustrating but not enough to ruin the overall flow of the individual stories. Interestingly, it's distinctly a pre-"Necropolis" story, since Silver's the Chief Judge. They are made even better by the incredible art. Behind The Gates: The Wagner Free Institute of Science and its Neighborhood, 1865-today Abstract This paper explores the relationship between museums and the neighborhoods around them. It looks specifically at the agnerW Free Institute of Science in North Philadelphia. The research begins with the founding of the Wagner in 1855, then focuses on major changes in the institution and community through the 20th century, and ends with an observational analysis of the relationship today. The Wagner and its neighborhood had a close relationship through the 1950’s, when the neighborhood experienced a rapid demographic change and the Wagner simultaneously reduced its programs. This is a break from the founding ideals of the Wagner, which especially targeted underserved audiences. Today the relationship is murkier, the neighborhood is once again going through a period of rapid demographic change, but the Wagner does not view its neighborhood as its primary audience. This paper, ultimately, tries to explore the idea of communities: how communities are defined and who decides which communities are relevant.
