The Arc’s School-to-Work program’s fourth annual Hands on Career day moved to a new location at the Oneida County Department of Public Works. Over 400 students attended the event to visit 55 vendors offering a wide- ranging selection of career opportunities for the students to consider for their future. Oneida County Executive, Anthony Picente toured the grounds and was impressed with what he saw. “Often, they hear about opportunities in other places, and that’s all well and good, but we want our young people to stay here,” said Picente. “I get troubled with the word disabilities sometimes because people have 7 great abilities and they show us what can be done.” 2018 | ANNUAL REPORT Family Support Network

The Arc, Oneida-Lewis is empowering families in Oneida and Lewis Counties who have a loved one with a developmental disability to become personally involved in public policy and to be aware of the services available to them. This group of like-minded people forms a unified voice to advocate and enhance the lives of the people we support. Another function of this group is lending support to family members, advocates, and caregivers who are a part of our agency. Some of the specific areas of focus of the Family Support Network are education and training, community awareness of Arc programs and services, navigation of Arc referrals and services, and political advocacy at the local and state level.

John Lee Cronin, a nationally known entrepreneur, presenter, and advocate for people with disabilities, delivered the keynote address at the CollegeWorks Graduation ceremony. Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome, asked his father, Mark, if he could start his own business selling socks. In 2016, that dream became a reality as John’s Crazy Socks was born. John’s company has taken off, and his story has been featured on ABC News, BBC News, Money Magazine, The Mighty website, and most recently, Fox News. In 2018, The Arc welcomed Chad Hartwig as the Executive Director of Business Enterprises to lead the reorganized Business Enterprises division. A partnership was established with the Advanced Institute for Manufacturing (AIM), part of the State Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), to develop an infrastructure that will support the growth of new customers. Progress Industries experienced growth due to the expansion into a new facility in Marcy that occurred at the end of 2017. Operating in this 41,000 square foot space allows the business to present warehousing solutions for new and existing customers. Progress Industries continues to provide packaging and fulfillment services with the ability to ship orders both locally and nationally, which creates a one-stop shop for customers. The Nickelback Redemption Center in Waterville continues to employ both people with and without developmental disabilities, which creates a truly integrated working environment. This business provides redemption services for walk-in customers and route pickup for commercial accounts. Hosting bottle and can drives for schools, sports teams, boosters, and clubs is a segment of the business that continues to enjoy steady growth.
