AT SPRING 2019 COOPERTHE COOPER UNION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART Milestones are important markers along the arc of an Leo Sorel Leo individual or institutional history. Birthdays, anniversaries, an achievement long in the making, a hurdle overcome, a barrier broken, a marker of the passage of the precious gift of time. Remembering and recognizing these moments remind us of what’s possible and invite us to renew a sense of purpose. In April, The Cooper Union will reach its own major milestone. 2019 marks the 160th year of the great experiment that Peter Cooper began in 1859. What’s remarkable is how much of his forward-thinking mindset continues to define us. Cooper Union is a place of opportunity, a place to take creative risks, a place where we aim to support our students’ personal and professional aspirations, wherever they may take them. Cooper’s significant scholarship levels today (provided to all undergraduate students and on average covering 76 percent of tuition) and ultimately a return to full-tuition scholarships for all undergraduates, provide opportunity for high-potential students by leveling the playing field and easing the financial burden of attending a highly selective, rigorous, and distinctive institution of higher education. That is critically important in a world where the income divide continues to widen and a higher education system struggles to fix what is broken and inaccessible to many. (Another Cooper program making a difference for students, the Saturday Program, turned 50; see page 8.) The Cooper Union has stood as a bastion of free speech and a place to champion democracy since its beginning, and we continue to carry that important responsibility forward today. -

STEPHEN ANTONAKOS Laconia, Greece 1926 — New York 2013 Antonakos’s work with neon since 1960 has lent the medium new perceptual and formal meanings in hundreds of gallery and museum exhibitions first in New York and then internationally. His use of spare, complete and incomplete geometric neon forms has ranged from direct 3-D indoor installations to painted Canvases, Walls, the well known back- lit Panels with painted or gold surfaces, his Rooms and Chapels. Starting in the 1970s he installed over 55 architecturally-scaled permanent Public Works in the USA, Europe, Israel, and Japan. Throughout, he conceived work in relation to its site — its scale, proportions, and character — and to the space that it shares with the viewer. He called his art, “real things in real spaces,” intending it to be seen without reference to anything outside the immediate visual and kinetic experience. Colored pencil drawings on paper and vellum, often in series, have been a major, rich practice since the 1950s; as has his extensive work with collage. Other major practices include the conceptual Packages, small-edition Artist’s Books, silver and white Reliefs, prints, and — since 2011 — several series of framed and 3-D Gold Works. Antonakos was born in the small Greek village of Agios Nikolaos in 1926 and moved to New York with his family in 1930. In the late 1940s, after returning from the US Army, he established his first studio in New York’s fur district. From the early 1960s forward, until the end in 2013, he worked in studios in Soho. S A L L Y SALLY An Interdisciplinary Exhibition Project Curators: Sasha Chavchavadze & JoAnne McFarland The Old Stone House & Washington Park Artpoetica Project Space The Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse October 16, 2019 — January 26, 2020 DNA evidence suggests that Sarah ‘Sally’ Hemings and Thomas Jefferson had several children together. While a teenager in France with Jefferson’s SALLY family, Hemings had a chance at full freedom, but returned to America with Jefferson in 1791 when he was 47 years old. Many historians believe Hem- ings was already pregnant with her first child by Jefferson when she returned. She lived out most of her life as a slave on Jefferson’s Monticello plantation, An Interdisciplinary Exhibition in quarters adjacent to his that have recently been restored. Others infuse their work and method- ologies with an urgency that underscores their compulsion to map their own and others’ undaunted passion and drive. Volume 5—2011 1 Why Jembe? The jembe, also known as the 'healing drum', was traditionally cut by members of the revered blacksmith caste who manufactured the various tools, instruments and ceremonial masks needed for everyday existence in ancient Africa. According to the Bamana people in Mali, the name of the jembe comes directly from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé" which literally translates as "everyone gather together" and defines the drum's purpose of summing the people. I chose the name because we are also coming together to support each other and to present our art to the world. Jembe contains the annual list of accomplishments of the Black Artists of DC (BADC). It is a yearly compilation designed to recognize the successes of our members, furnish member contact information and act as a guide to possible venues. The future is often cloudy and much has been lost in our past. It is important to document the work of Washington DC artists and that the documentation is readily available for future research. Towards that end, I have initiated this volume which is being sent to selected repositories. No one document can contain all of our accomplishments but my aim is to give a clear picture of the direction and focus of our 400 plus members and supporters.
