Kessler finished high school in Gainesville, FL, which was the limit of his education except for various correspondence schools. From 1898 to 1912 he was secretary and landscape architect with P. J. Berkman Fruitland Nursery of Augusta, Georgia In 1905 Robert Jemison, Jr. contracted with Fruitland Nursery to prepare landscape designs for the Mountain Terrace section of Birmingham. Kessler came to Birmingham in 1906 as a representative of the company to oversee the installation. He stayed after the project was completed and began practicing as a landscape architect. Some early projects and employers: 1918-1919 Designing Landscape with the US Corp. of Engineers, Muscle Shoals, AL 1919 –1933 Alabama Power Co; Tennessee Electric, Chattanooga, TN; University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL; City of Birmingham Park and Recreation Board; Alabama Polytechnical Institute, Auburn, AL. 1933 – 1942 Project planner and manager for U.S. Resettlement Administration, Birmingham; Architect and Chief Engineer of 4th Regional Resettlement Administration and Defense Housing, Montgomery; and Project LA for the U.S. Housing Administration for Birmingham, Huntsville, Sylacauga, Talladega, Childersburg and Montgomery. In 1942, he was elected to honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects, recognizing his achievements in planning and landscape architecture Kessler collaborated with Robert Jemison, Jr. from 1912 until Jemison’s death, on the planning and development of areas including Fairfield (Corey), Forest Park, Glencoe, Central Park, Valley View and Mountain Brook. Some of Kessler’s other notable works also include numerous churches, The Club, and the Birmingham and Mountain Brook Country Clubs His wife, Maude A. Kessler died 21 Nov 1954 and he continued to live with his only child, a widowed daughter, Mrs. James A. (Elva) Meissner, at his home at 2609 Heathermoor Rd, Mountain Brook, AL Scope and Content: Much of William Kessler’s work was inadvertently destroyed after his death.
