Present Pasts, 7(1): 2, pp. 1–10, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/pp.73 RESEARCH PAPER Lucifer Over Luxor: Archaeology, Egyptology, and Occultism in Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle Ethan Doyle White* One of the great figureheads of American experimental cinema, Kenneth Anger (b.1927), is internationally renowned for his pioneering work, recognisable for its blend of homoerotica, popular and classical music, and dark, symbolist imagery. A follower of Thelema, the religion of infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Anger’s work is imbued with occult themes and undercurrents rarely comprehen- sible to the non-initiated viewer. In exploring these esoteric ideas, Anger makes use of archaeology and heritage in his short filmsEaux d’Artifice (1953) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954–66), as well as in the lost films The Love That Whirls (1949) and Thelema Abbey (1955), which utilize such disparate elements as Aztec human sacrifice and putative Renaissance Satanism. However, this theme only reaches its apex in Lucifer Rising (1980), an exploration of Thelemic theology filmed at such sites as Avebury, Luxor, and Karnak, which reflects and propagates the Thelemic view of the past—an ‘alternative archaeology’ rooted in Crowley’s own fascination with Egyptomania. This paper seeks to explore Anger’s use of the past and place it in its proper context of twentieth-century Western esotericism.     Descriptive Analysis of Experience and Appraisal: The Case of Crowley Receiving The Book of the Law Egil Asprem © 2014 University of California Santa Barbara The sources: 1904: the manuscript of The Book of the Law 1907: annotations on the front of the manuscript 1912: Autobiographical account (“Temple of Solomon the King”, The Equinox 1.7-1.8) 1920: Autobiographical account (“Remarks on the Method of Receiving Liber Legis…”, written 1920, Abbey of Thelema, Cefalù, Sicily). 1929: Autobiographical account (Confessions of Aleister Crowley– written late 1920s) Note on the analysis: The table below systematizes the various accounts that Crowley gave of the reception of The Book of the Law in Cairo in 1904, loosely following the method of Descriptive Analysis laid out in Taves (2009). It focuses only on accounts of the writing of the book itself (April 8-10), teasing apart claims on intended behavior, unintended experience, and the associated cause and reason explanations. A fuller treatment should include the experiences leading up to the writing (March 16 – April 7), notably the rituals and mediumistic experiments with Crowley’s wife. This would reveal an even more complex attribution process, and provide additional context to explanations offered for the later events. I have made notes on this where deemed necessary. The analysis reveals three points of interest about the shifting emphasis on Crowley’s accounts over time. First, descriptions of what happened (both in terms of intended behavior events and unintended experience event) remain stable over time. Second, as time passes, accounts spend much more time on explanations; they become more elaborate, and draw on an expanding range of evidence and argumentation.

Among his chief acts of subversion were his many displays of a very fluid and malleable identity. He played with “selves” like they were merely wardrobes for a day and found himself developing more fully for the breadth of experience that he achieved from such practices. In the wake of Friedrich Nietszche, Crowley looked to the strength of each individual will to deny being identified by traditional systems such as Christianity or “Modernity,” pushing instead for a chaotic presentation of the self that is both wholly opposed to external authority and wholly enthusiastic about play, contradiction and experimentation.     Aries – Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism 21 (2021) 125–152 ARIES brill.com/arie ‘Mercury is in a Very Ape-Like Mood’ Frieda Harris’s Perception of Thelema Deja Whitehouse University of Bristol, Bristol, UK [email protected] Abstract Frieda, Lady Harris, wife of Sir Percy Harris, Liberal M.P. and party Chief Whip, cre- ated the magnificent Tarot paintings that underpin Aleister Crowley’s The Book of Thoth. Harris conformed to the conventional appearance of a respectable middle- class lady until she was in her sixties. However, her unwavering commitment to Aleis- ter Crowley and the Tarot project eventually threatened not only her social stand- ing, but also her marriage. Despite her dedication to the Thoth Tarot, she never fully engaged with Thelema, which she anthropomorphised as the bossy and interfering ‘Miss Thelema’. Nevertheless, she progressed through the grades of Crowley’s magi- cal orders and remained loyal to Crowley and the Great Work to the end of her days, endeavouring to secure a publishing deal for a general release of The Book of Thoth and the Thoth Tarot deck. Using extracts from Harris and Crowley’s correspondence and Crowley’s diaries, this paper will explore Harris’s personal involvement with Thelema, both in her collaborative activities with Crowley, and her endeavours to preserve his legacy after his death. His father died when Aleister was eleven, and the boy and his mother went to live with relatives. Supported by a legacy left by his father, Crowley entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1895. Though he rarely attended lectures and left without taking a degree, his time at Cambridge was not wasted. He began a program of self-education which involved reading everything he could get his hands on, becoming extremely proficient at chess, and enjoying the social venue available to a wealthy young college man of the times. Crowley traveled a great deal during school holidays, taking trips to St. Petersburg, Holland, and Scandinavia. It was in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1896 that he had his first mystical experience, which was to shape his pursuits for the rest of his life.
