Members apply established techniques of critical appraisal and evidence-based review of topics solicited from both WorkSafeBC staff and other interested parties such as surgeons, medical specialists, and rehabilitation providers. Methods • A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted on October 21, 2015 • Literature search was done via the following databases: 1. Commercial medical literature databases, including BIOSIS Previews®, Embase®, MEDLINE®, MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations®, MEDLINE Daily Update® and OLDMEDLINE®, that are available through OVID® platform/interface. 2. US CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSHTIC-2®, database. • The searches were done from the inception date of each database to October 21, 2015. • The first literature searches on the OVID® platform were done by employing combination keywords of: 1. (muscle tension dysphonia) AND ((recurrence rate) OR (recurrent rate)). No published study was identified through this search. 2. (muscle tension dysphonia) AND (recurrence OR recurrent). Five(137-141) published studies were identified through this search. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of these studies(137- 141), none were thought to be relevant to answer our question. 3. (muscle tension dysphonia). One hundred and thirty-six(1-136) published studies were identified through this search. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of these one hundred and thirty-six published studies, five(1,35,41,61,120) were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. WorkSafeBC Evidence-Based Practice Group October 2015 www.worksafebc.com/evidence Recurrence Rate of Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD) Among Teachers (or other patients) Previously Diagnosed with MTD 2 • The second literature search was done on the US CDC NIOSHTIC-2® database, by employing combination keywords of: (muscle tension dysphonia). No published study was identified through this search. • No limitations, such as on date or language of publication, were employed in this review. • A manual search was also conducted on references of the articles that were fully retrieved. Four(142-145) published studies were identified and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. Results • Overall, nine(1,35,41,61,120, 142-145) studies were retrieved and appraised in full. However, none of these studies provided any data on the recurrence rate of MTD including among teachers. Summary • At present, there is no published study providing data on the recurrence rate of MTD, specifically amongst teachers.
