Assessment Possibilities: ____ Class assignment - project/presentation (checked or graded) ____ Test/Quiz

____ Oral response/Teacher observation ____ Other ______Lesson Topic: God Our Teacher is Patient Duration: One week

Lesson Activities for a week: (could be used for 1-2 longer lessons or daily 30 minute lessons) 1. Introduce “God our Teacher is Patient” and talk about the Bible idea of patience - ‘slow to anger’ , slow to pay back when someone has done something wrong, also keeping at something and not giving up. 2. Play the old Agapeland song sung by Herbert the Snail - “Have Patience”. Lyrics - Appendix 1, Recording - http://www.agapelandmusic.us/MusicClips/Samples/Music_Machine/Fruit_of_the_Spirit/06- Patience_Herbert_the_Snail.mp3 3. Patience involves understanding and waiting:- What happens if a parent is not patient with their baby when it is learning to walk? If they yell at the child for not learning quicker whose fault is it? Who needs to adjust? (you could dramatize this situation) A pregnant mother needs to be patient waiting for her baby to come. 4. Tell the story that Jesus told about the fig tree to help us understand that His Father is patient. (Bring to life by drawing pictures): Then Jesus told a story. "A man had a fig tree," he said. "It had been planted in his vineyard. When he went to look for fruit on it, he didn't find any. So he went to the man who took care of the vineyard. He said, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree. But I haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?' " 'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year. I'll dig around it and feed it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'” Luke 13:6-9 5. This week’s verse makes it clear that to love others means being patient just like God is patient with us. It means having wisdom and self-control to keep your mouth shut when another person is slower than you. How can we be patient with people ... in the playground ... in the classroom .... at home .... in a meal line? Make a big wall poster with the verse in bubble letters - have children color. (Could use printed version Appendix 3) 6. Bible Journals: Day One: Students make a title across the top of the next two pages of Bible journals “God Our Teacher is Patient”. Color and illustrate. Look up the memory verse in Bibles - read aloud and write into journal NICELY or paste in printed version. Talk about it, set it in context. Give out student copies for memorizing. If possible have a song written for the verse! Day Two etc.: Students spend time meditating on the verse, listening to God. Illustrate and note things God says. Practical helps to meditate - Read it/ Write it/ Sing it/ Say it/ Pray it/ Draw it Final Day: (or at beginning of Day 1) Test memory verse by having students write verse on paper & hand in or speak out loud individually (particularly if writing is a challenge) It could also be done as a “fill in the gap” exercise - (Appendix 2)

Love is patient. Love is kind ... 1 Corinthians 13:4a (NIrV)

Patience (Herbert the Snail) From Music Machine - The Fruit of the Spirit

Verse 1: There was a snail called Herbert who was so very slow He caused a lot of traffic jams wherever he would go The ants were always getting mad and the beetles, they would fume But Herb would always poke along and sing this little tune

Chorus: Have patience, have patience Don't be in such a hurry When you get impatient, you only start to worry Remember, remember that God is patient, too And think of all the times when others have to wait for you

Verse 2: When Herbert was much younger, he often got in trouble Forgetting that he was a snail, he did things on the double He'd crash through every spider web and with crickets he'd collide 'Til one day Herbert's father took his speeding son aside

Chorus

Verse 3: As you can well imagine, there's a moral to this tale Some of you may find yourselves behind a creeping snail So if you get impatient and you're easily disturbed Think about this little song and take a tip from Herb

Chorus
