Cecil B. DeMille’s Greatest Authenticity Lapse? By Anton Karl Kozlovic Spring 2003 Issue of KINEMA THE PLAINSMAN (1937): CECIL B. DeMILLE’S GREATEST AUTHENTICITY LAPSE? Cecil B. Demille was a seminal founder of Hollywood whose films were frequently denigrated by critics for lacking historical verisimilitude. For example, Pauline Kael claimed that DeMille had ”falsified history more than anybody else” (Reed 1971: 367). Others argued that he never let ”historical fact stand in the way of a good yarn” (Hogg 1998: 39) and that ”historical authenticity usually took second place to delirious spectacle” (Andrew 1989: 74). Indeed, most ”film historians regard De Mille with disdain” (Bowers 1982: 689)and tended to turn away in embarrassment because ”De Mille had pretensions of being a historian” (Thomas 1975: 266). Even Cecil’s niece Agnes de Mille (1990: 185) diplomatically referred to his approach as ”liberal.” Dates, sequences, geography, and character bent to his needs.” Likewise, James Card (1994: 215) claimed that: ”DeMille was famous for using historical fact only when it suited his purposes. When history didn’t make a good scene, he threw it out.” This DeMillean fact-of-life was also verified by gossip columnist Louella Parsons (1961: 58) who observed that DeMille ”spent thousands of dollars to research his films to give them authenticity. Then he would disregard all the research for the sake of a scene or a shot that appealed to him as better movie-making.” As Charles Hopkins (1980: 357, 360) succinctly put it: ”De Mille did not hesitate -

No cabe la menor que como documento de partida para la formación las guías y normas de audiodescripción existentes son de una gran utilidad, sin embargo, éstas no son perfectas ya que no ofrecen respuestas a algunas cuestiones esenciales como qué es lo que se debe describir cuando no se cuenta con el tiempo suficiente para describir todo lo que sucede. El presente artículo analiza una de las cuestiones que normalmente no responden las guías o normas: qué se debe priorizar. Se demostrará cómo una profundización en la narrativa de películas y una mejor percepción de las pistas visuales que ofrece el director puede ayudar a decidir la información que se recoge. Existing AD guidelines are undoubtedly valuable instruments for beginning audio describers, but they are not perfect in that they do not provide answers to certain essential questions, such as what should be described in situations where it is impossible to describe everything that can be seen. -

Edward Abbey to give fourth annual David Marc Belkin Memorial Lecture April 5, 1982 Edward Abbey, novelist, essayist and part-time forest ranger best known for his hardhitting, sometimes bitter, usually irreverent defense of the world's wilderness areas, will give the fourth annual David Marc Belkin Memorial Lecture Thursday, April 22, at the University of California, San Diego. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 8 p.m. in room 2722 of the Undergraduate Sciences Building on the Revelle campus. The title for Abbey's talk is "A Walk Through the Desert Hills." The Belkin Lectures on environmental issues were established by the parents and friends of David Marc Belkin, an honors graduate of John Muir College at UC San Diego. Belkin lost his life while backpacking in the High Sierra in July 1978. His love for the wilderness prompted his family to establish the endowed memorial fund in his memory. Abbey has been called "A living American artifact, part maverick, part pastoral extremist, part semi-hermit, part latter-day Jeremiah Johnson." His environment is the desert, the forest or the Australian outback; his people are the Indians and the Aborigines who know how to live in these places without spoiling them. His targets range from government agencies that authorize the building of roads through wilderness areas and gigantic corporations that engineer the "rape" of the land, to simple-minded tourists who, according to Abbey, defile the solitude with their very presence. Speaking for himself, Abbey has said, "I've found I can get along comfortably without a four-wheel-drive V-8- powered, gadget-loaded pickup truck. -
