55 REGISTRATION – TYPE DEFINITIONS

2. HACK, , MAXI COB AND RIDING HORSE REGISTERS

(A) Registers

Hacks (i) Hacks: The ideal is of type and should be capable of carrying an average adult. The Hack must be a pleasure to ride and have excellent manners. The Hack should be in self-carriage and be light and soft to ride, it should also have correct conformation with the emphasis on quality and elegance. The latter stems from a well set on head and neck combined with a good length of shoulder. The movement should be smooth and graceful with a true pointing of the toe. To achieve these qualities the Hack must be extremely well schooled.

Hacks can be:

Small Hack: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 154cms.

Large Hack: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 154cms, but not exceeding 160cms.

The Association recommends that Shows should provide two classes for Hacks, but if it is only possible to hold one class the full range of height should be covered and the wording should be as follows:

Open Hack: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 160cms.

For Novice, Ladies Side Saddle, Young Rider, Restricted, Amateur and Amateur Owner Rider classes see Rule 6 (Definitions and Classifications).

Hack Judging: to be judged on type, ride, manners and conformation. It is recommended that Judges use the following percentages when judging Hacks: Ride 40%, Conformation 40%, Individual Show 20%.

The compulsory individual show should not exceed 1½ minutes and should include walk, trot, canter, rein-back, stand still and obedience to the leg.

Judges should penalise lack of manners.

Cobs (ii) Cobs: The Cob is a type rather than a breed. A short-legged animal, with bone, substance and quality, capable of carrying a substantial weight. The Cob should be well mannered and ideal for nervous or elderly riders. Cobs should have sensible heads, (sometimes roman nosed), a full generous eye, shapely neck, well muscled, with a hogged mane (showing no significant growth) and well defined wither. The Cob should also have clean, strong hocks and all the attributes of a good hunter; low movement and a comfortable ride.

Cobs must be registered as lightweight (minimum of 8½” bone), heavyweight (minimum of 9” bone) or Maxi Cob exceeding 155cms and are defined as follows:

6 REGISTRATION – TYPE DEFINITIONS Cobs can be:

Lightweight Cob: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 155cms, capable of carrying up to 14 stone.

Heavyweight Cob: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 155cms, capable of carrying more than 14 stone.

Maxi Cob: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 155cms – with a recommended height limit of 160cms - to be judged as Cobs. Judges must pay particular attention to type (i.e. short legged animals of COB type). To be shown hogged (showing no significant growth).

First and Second prize winners of Maxi Cob classes are NOT eligible for Open Cob Championships at shows ONLY holding Open Cob and Maxi Cob classes.

For Novice, Ladies Side Saddle, Young Rider, Restricted, Amateur and Amateur Owner Rider classes see Rule 6 (Definitions and Classifications).

Affiliated Shows are recommended, where possible, to hold three classes, either Novice, Open and Maxi Cobs or Lightweight, Heavyweight and Maxi Cobs. When shows are only able to hold one class the wording should be as follows:

Open Cob: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 155cms. To be ridden.

Shows holding Novice, Amateur and Open Maxi Cob Classes, in addition to Weight Classes, may include the First and Second prize winners of these classes in their Overall Cob Championship.

Novice Cob/Maxi Cob: mare or gelding, four years old and over exceeding 148cms. Where Shows hold a combined Novice Cob class, Novice Maxi Cobs will be eligible to enter. If Shows hold separate Novice Cob classes, i.e. Lightweight & Heavyweight, Novice Maxi Cobs will not be eligible to enter.

Amateur Cob/Maxi Cob: mare or gelding, four years old and over exceeding 148cms. Where Shows hold a combined Amateur Cob class, Amateur Maxi Cobs will be eligible to enter. If Shows hold separate Amateur Cob classes, i.e. Lightweight & Heavyweight, Amateur Maxi Cobs will not be eligible to enter.

Owners of Cobs must take particular care that they are registered in the correct weight category. Queries regarding classification should be addressed to the General Manager.

Judges may not change a Cob’s weight category at a show but will be expected to notify the Association if they consider a particular Cob to be in the wrong weight and pay particular attention to type and weight carrying ability when judging the respective classes. No Cob may change weight during the season if it has qualified for the Royal International or Horse of the Year Show during the current season. Only when the Cob has been re-classified may it be shown in the other class. If already entered for a show and subsequently re-classified, the Exhibitor must inform the show concerned who should transfer entry to the correct class.

7 REGISTRATION – TYPE DEFINITIONS Weight Cobs, aged 4, 5 or 6 years old, whether Light or Heavy, that hold a current and valid JMB Height Certificate, cannot compete in Maxi Cob classes. They may only move to the Maxi Cob category if re-measured greater than 155cms in the current year or, are registered as a Maxi Cob at the start of the following year.

Weight Cobs, aged 7 years old or over, whether Light or Heavy, that hold a current and valid JMB Height Certificate issued after the 1st January 2011 cannot compete in Maxi Cob classes. They may only change category to Maxi Cob if re-called for measurement and upon re-measurement, exceed 155cms.

Cob Judging: to be judged on type, ride, manners and conformation. Judges should ask the class to gallop (conditions permitting). Cobs should be judged in the same procedure as Hunters, but they should be well schooled and particular attention should be paid to manners.

Riding Horses (iii) Riding Horses: A Riding Horse is between a Hack and a Hunter. It should have quality, substance, good bone, correct conformation, presence and true action. Horses may not be registered as Riding Horses if they have been placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any ridden Hunter class at the Royal International Horse Show or the Horse of the Year Show in the current or previous year. Riding Horses can be:

Small Riding Horse: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms and not exceeding 158cms.

Large Riding Horse: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 158cms

The Association recommends that shows, if possible, should hold classes for both height categories. If there is only one class held it must cover the full range of heights and the wording should be as follows:

Open Riding Horse: mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms.

For Novice, Ladies Side Saddle, Young Rider, Restricted, Amateur and Amateur Owner Rider classes see Rule 6 (Definitions and Classifications).

Riding Horse Judging: to be judged on type, ride, manners and conformation; Judges should ask the class to gallop (conditions permitting). Judges must ride the Exhibits first and then may require individual shows from as many as time allows. The individual show should not exceed 1½ minutes and should include walk, trot, canter, gallop, rein back (optional), stand still and obedience to the leg.

8 REGISTRATION – TYPE DEFINITIONS Working Show Horse (iv) Working Show Horse: Open to Hacks, Cobs, Maxi Cobs and Riding Horses, mare or gelding four years old and over, exceeding 148cms.

(D) Naming:

(i) Not Previously Registered Animals: All Horses registering with the Association must use the “Name” that is already on the current passport of that animal; there shall be no change of “Name” permitted. Members are reminded that should an animal require a JMB height certificate, in order to Register with the Association, the “Name” on this certificate must correspond with that on the passport. The Association will not be responsible for any costs that might be incurred due to failure to comply with this Rule.

(ii) Previously Registered Animals: All Horses re-registering with the Association must use the “Name” that it has been, or is currently Registered with the Association; there shall be no change of “Name” permitted. Members are reminded that should an animal require a JMB height certificate, in order to re-register with the Association, the “Name” on this certificate must correspond with that previously Registered for this animal. The Association will not be responsible for any costs that might be incurred due to failure to comply with this Rule.

(iii) The Association reserves the right to veto all “Names” prior to Registration and could refuse to allow the use of a “Name” should it be deemed by the Board to be offensive, inappropriate, plagiarised, duplicated or subject to any copyright or trademark; this list is not exhaustive. Should the Board deem it necessary, it will request written authority of acceptance of use of “Names” that are deemed to be protected and from whom the Board deem it may be required. The BSHA might also instruct a microchip reading. Where there is an original “Name” on a passport, the original will remain on the Passport and the new “Name” will be added.

13 REGISTRATION – CONDITIONS (iv) Under the Horse Passport Regulation (England) 2009, a Horse is only allowed to have one passport. If a Horse has more than one, it is recommended that the first issued and higher integrity passport (with the most complete pedigree for example) be retained and used. Any other passports should be returned to their relevant Passport Issuing Organisation for rescinding in favour of the chosen passport. Any vaccination records/declaration pages should be returned from the rescinding PIO for inclusion in the chosen passport. The name on the chosen passport would not be subject to change.

Should there be any confusion with the Ruling, please contact the office for advice prior to obtaining any JMB height certificate or Registration. The BSHA also reserve the right to sanction a change of Name in exceptional circumstances. Should this occur, a charge of £300.00 will be levied.

(E) Identification of Horses: The identification of Hacks, Cobs, Maxi Cobs, Riding Horses and Hunters must be in accordance with their National Passport or JMB Height Certificate at all times; markings must not be hidden, altered or covered with make-up. The BSHA will authorise spot checks at certain Shows and Exhibitors breaking this Rule will not be allowed to compete. NB. Exhibitors are required by DEFRA to carry with them, Passports for all animals when competing or travelling.

(F) Change of Type/Category: A Horse may not be registered in more than one Type at the same time (e.g. as both a Hack and a Riding Horse) or in more than one Category at the same time (e.g. as both a Small Hack and a Large Hack). If the horse is required to change Type/Category during the competing year this will incur a payment of £25.00. The Registration may be changed once in a season if the Horse has not qualified for either the Royal International Horse Show or the Horse of the Year Show, in the current season. A Horse may not revert to a Novice in the new Type or Category. Should a Horse be re-measured by the JMB and measure out, then it will be required to change Type or Category on payment of the Change of Section Fee; qualification will be forfeited and the horse may not revert to a Novice in the new Type or Category.

(G) Shoeing: All Horses, if shod, must be shod in shoes that do not cover the frog; normal shaped open heeled plastic stick-on shoes are permissible. No pads or surgical shoes are allowed; i.e. Bar shoes.

(H) Tack: Bitless and Running Gags are not permitted in any classes. The use of Swale bits is discouraged in all classes; it is not permitted in any Novice Horse Classes.

Failure to observe any of the Rules may result in disqualification of the animal concerned and disciplinary proceedings by the BSHA against the person breaking the Rules in accordance with the BSHA Disciplinary Procedure, may be implemented (See Rule 11). In the event of disqualification of an animal after a cup, rosette or prize money has been awarded, such cup, rosette or prize money must be returned forthwith to the Show or the BSHA as appropriate.

(F) If in the opinion of the Judge, the behavior of a Horse is dangerous or unacceptable in any other way, the Judge must report such behaviour to the Board of the Association which shall investigate the report.

(G) Judges must not remount a Horse from which they have fallen. They must then use their discretion in deciding whether or not they are fit to continue Ride Judging at their own risk.

(H) Generally the Association discourages the showing of over fat Horses and Judges will take this into consideration when making their awards.

17. EQUINE INFLUENZA VACCINATIONS It is strongly recommended that all horses registered with the BSHA have Equine Influenza and Tetanus vaccinations. The requirement for the first 3 vaccinations is as follows: the first 2 vaccinations 21 – 92 days apart, a third booster between 150 – 215 days, and an annual booster vaccination within 365 days thereafter. No horse should enter competitions within 7 days of an EI vaccination. Foals should commence vaccinations at 6 months old. This Rule may be subject to change from guidance from the FEI/BEF and any changes will be notified via the Association’s website. The current FEI ruling is for a six-monthly booster as opposed to annual; therefore, it is recommended that you check with shows that fall under FEI regulation before entering e.g. Windsor, Hickstead, HOYS etc.
