FREDRIKSTEN FORTRESS

• 350 year old fortress in , Norway with a rich history THE ASSIGNMENT

• Convey the 350 year history of Fredriksten Fortress using sound and images • Permanent installation – for at least three years • Outdoor projection on two perpendicular walls in the inner fortress

THE PROCESS

• Script • Storyboard • Animatic • Pre-production • Shooting • Post production • Sound design SCRIPT • A first draft was created by Fredriksten Fortress in cooperation with Odin Media • Decision to do without language specific text or narration

STORYBOARD

• The entire story is sketched out scene by scene • The foundation for the process moving on. • Several revisions ANIMATIC • The storyboard images are distributed along a timeline, along with a preliminary sound sketch. • This gives us a rough idea of the duration of the show, and the flow of the narrative. PRE-PRODUCTION

• Planning the studio shoot based on the storyboard and animatic • Props – building and acquiring • Building the green screen studio in Fredrikstad • Booking extras and crew (FAC + others) • Finding uniforms • Hiring cameras and lights SHOOT • 6 days in green screen studio i Fredrikstad • Scenes are shot based on production plan and availability of resources, not chronologically • We end up with a total of 9,5 hours of footage POST

• 3 months of: • Mapping • Editing • 3D Animation • Compositing • Mastering SOUND DESIGN

• Work done in parallel with the post production • Studio recording of sound effects and voices • 3.1 surround sound. 3 channels + subwoofer TECHNICAL SOLUTION • Hardware provided and installed by YIT Halden (now Caverion) • CUE control system, key switch for start + timers • 2 BluRay players • 4 Projectors, two for each image – the most costly part of the project (almost 1 Million NOK) • 3.1 sound system • LED lights with programmable color • Automatic shutoff of exterior lighting in the viewing area.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES

• Precise mapping of the walls was needed for certain shots, and needed to be done without a budget for Warp+Blend hardware • Color grading to make the images look as good as possible on old stone walls required multiple sessions with on-site testing.

CONCLUSIONS • Project a success, and is well received by the public • Lack of narration and text excludes no one, and piques interest • Popular with the restaurants on the fortress as added value to their customers. (once we turned the subwoofer down) • Now in its fourth installed year • Blu-Ray players have been occasional troublemakers, so a HD-based system would be strongly advised if we were to do this again • Total budget around 2 Million NOK – Interreg IKON + local sponsors • Relatively low costs to keep it running (20-25k NOK/year)
