Participation Framework Underlying Youtube Interaction Marta Dynel University of Łódź
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.pragma.2014.04.001 Journal of Pragmatics 73: 37-52 Participation framework underlying YouTube interaction Marta Dynel University of Łódź Abstract Drawing on the literature on interaction in new media and on participation models underlying (non)fictional multi-party media talk, this paper contributes to the burgeoning literature on computer-mediated communication. Specifically, this article advocates a new participatory framework holding for multi-party interaction on YouTube, which is compared to that underlying films and televised programmes. YouTube users’ participation is more complex than television viewers’, who are involved primarily as ratified hearers dubbed ‘‘recipients’’. YouTubers, on the other hand, engage in asynchronous computer-mediated interaction, changing their participatory statuses at the production and reception ends. The extended participatory framework proposed here for YouTube resides in three levels of communication: the level of the speaker and hearers in video interaction, the level of the sender and the recipient of a YouTube video, and the level of YouTube speakers and hearers who post and read comments, respectively. These communicative levels are realised by: interactants in videos and the (collective) sender, i.e. the production crew (both typical also of televised films and broadcasts), together with YouTube users, who may be video interactants and/or senders, as well as take other participatory roles. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. After a Year in Which His Global Restaurant Empire Almost Went
Gordon Ramsay's After a year in which his global restaurant empire almost went bankrupt, the bad boy of British cuisine is serving cheaper cuts of meat and focusing on the richer rewards of TV stardom. By WILLIAM GREEN Photograph by PHIL RISK n a gray morning in October, Gordon Ramsay bursts into the kitchen of his south London house, pop music blaring from the radio. At the heart of the room stands a 67,000 pound (Sill,000) French cooking range that weighs 2.5 tons and had to be lowered by crane into the celebrity chef's home. Ramsay, who is 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) tall and weighs 215 pounds (98 kilograms), is wearing jeans, a tight black T-shirt that accentuates his muscles and a Bell & Ross watch—a Swiss brand marketed to soldiers, bomb-disposal experts and other "men facing extreme situations." The 43-year-old Scot pours himself a juice, sits at the Idtchen table and looks back on his own extreme situation: a year in which his global restaurant empire al most went banlmupt. Hell's Kitchen – Gordon Ramsay Biography
Hell’s Kitchen – Gordon Ramsay Biography Gordon Ramsay Head Chef, Gordon Ramsay Scottish by birth, Gordon Ramsay was brought up in England after his parents moved south to Stratford-upon-Avon. His first career break came while playing football for Oxford United, where he was spotted by a Glasgow Rangers scout in a F.A. youth club match. After completing trials, he was signed by the Scottish champions at age 15. Three years later he gave up professional football and went back to college to complete a course in hotel management. Ramsay then moved to London, where he joined Chef Marco Pierre White in the early days of Harvey's in Wandsworth. After a couple of years, he moved to Le Gavroche to work alongside Albert Roux. This was followed by three years of working in France in the kitchens of Guy Savoy and Joel Roubuchon. Here he was able to enhance his expertise in classic French cooking. In October 1993, Ramsay became chef of the newly opened Aubergine where he won many accolades, including two Michelin stars within three years of its debut. Chef Ramsay published his first cookbook, Passion for Flavour, in October 1996. His second book, Passion for Seafood, was published in May 1999. A Chef for All Seasons was published in September 2000, followed by Just Desserts in September 2001, Secrets in 2003, Gordon Ramsay Makes It Easy in 2005, Gordon Ramsay's Sunday Lunch in 2006 and Gordon Ramsay's Fast Food. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Language
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Language is a tool used by everyone to communicate. By using language, people communicate in order to exchange the information they have. People can communicate in any different way. Each person will bring their own thought when they speak. Pragmatics take part in analyzing the meaning of communication based on the context. Pragmatics analyzes what people mean through utterance and context in order to understand people. When speaking, people try to convey the information they have (Fromkin, Rodman, Hyams, 2013, p. 9). People try to deliver their information as clear as possible to the interlocutor. However, the understanding of each person can be different. Sometimes, the speech can be consider to be polite or not. If the conversation is polite, the communication can go smoothly and it will not hurt someone's feeling. If the conversation is impolite, it will embarrass the interlocutor’s feeling. Sometimes, people do not put their attention when talking to the hearer. Occasionally, not all conversations that uttered by someone sound polite to others. Thus, this research aims to make people aware about impoliteness speech in conversation. An impoliteness speech occurs while the speaker communicates with the interlocutor. Impoliteness is a concept that proposed by Culpeper (1996). Impoliteness is a communicative strategy of attacking the interlocutor’s face. Impoliteness occurs because the speaker wants to convey something directly and emphatically. However, the speaker is not aware of the interlocutor’s face. It could hurt the feelings of the interlocutor. It can also cause 11 disharmony between the speaker and the interlocutor. -
