Amazing Grace
AMAZING GRACE UK, 2006, d. Michael Apted It is said that the hymn Amazing Grace is the best known in the English- speaking world. Most would not know that it was written by a ship’s captain, heavily involved in the 18th century slave trade, who experienced a conversion and devoted his later life to prayer and reparation. His name was John Newton – and he is played most movingly here by Albert Finney. However, the focus is on the anti-slavery campaigner, William Wilberforce. He is played with intensity and conviction by television’s Captain Horatio Hornblower, Ioann Gryffudd. And he is supported by a fine and extensive British cast including Michael Gambon as Lord Fox, Benedict Cumberbatch as the young Prime Minister, William Pitt, Rufus Sewell as the activist the Rev. Thomas Clarkson, Ciaran Hinds as the arrogant Lord Tarleton of Liverpool and Romola Garai as Barbara Spooner who eventually married Wilberforce. Most audiences will find Amazing Grace a significant cinema experience. Its style is very much the British heritage recreation of a period, a meticulous presentation of period, costumes, décor and the atmosphere of the times – which culminates in a moving brass band rendition of Amazing Grace. But, what will be important for audiences is the theme of the inhumanity and injustice of slavery and the fact that the plantations of the West Indies and the Americas depended for their prosperity on slave labour and the urban wealth of the 18th century metropolises, especially those in Britain and America, was based on slavery. 2007 sees the 200th anniversary of the Act for Abolition of the Slave Trade throughout the British Empire, although the final Slavery Abolition Act was not passed until 1833, the year of William Wilberforces’s death.

CAST BIOS TOM RILEY (Leonardo da Vinci) Tom has been seen in a variety of TV roles, recently portraying Dr. Laurence Shepherd opposite James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish in ITV1’s critically acclaimed six-part medical drama series “Monroe.” Tom has completed filming the highly anticipated second season which premiered autumn 2012. In 2010, Tom played the role of Gavin Sorensen in the ITV thriller “Bouquet of Barbed Wire,” and was also cast in the role of Mr. Wickham in the ITV four-part series “Lost in Austen,” alongside Hugh Bonneville and Gemma Arterton. Other television appearances include his roles in Agatha Christie’s “Poirot: Appointment with Death” as Raymond Boynton, as Philip Horton in “Inspector Lewis: And the Moonbeams Kiss the Sea” and as Dr. James Walton in an episode of the BBC series “Casualty 1906,” a role that he later reprised in “Casualty 1907.” Among his film credits, Tom played the leading roles of Freddie Butler in the Irish film Happy Ever Afters, and the role of Joe Clarke in Stephen Surjik’s British Comedy, I Want Candy. Downton Abbey – Review

Downton Abbey – Review The film begins in 1927, about a year and a half after the TV series ended. Robert and Cora Crawley, the Earl and Countess of Grantham are informed that King George V and Queen Mary will visit Downton Abbey as part of their royal tour. Members of the royal household staff descend upon the estate to prepare for the visit, ruffling the feathers of Downton's own staff. Then, Lady Bagshaw, Queen Mary's lady-in-waiting, has a property feud with the Crawleys. There is bound to be friction because of that. Aside from the emotional turbulence, there's a tension in the air as an assassin is apparently on the loose. How the different elements get played out and whether the Crawley family is able to weather these storms is the plot in a nutshell. Dowager Countess Violet (Dame Maggie Smith) is as full of repartee as ever. She's matched in her one- liners by her friend Isobel (Penelope Wilton). Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier), the head butler, is kind of unprepared for the royal visit and is temporarily replaced by the series' favourite Carson (Jim Carter). Barrow does utilise the off time to explore who he really is. Tom Branson (Allen Leech), the former family chauffeur and Irish revolutionary, gets to prove his loyalty to the King in unexpected ways. Simon Jones and Geraldine James make for the perfect royal couple while Imelda Staunton is perfect as Maud Bagshaw, the one woman who dares to take on Violet.
