They are one cohesive unit. There is not a guy on the team that doesn’t want his teammate to succeed.” While team unity is key, Walker knows that you still have to have talent. “We have depth everywhere,” he said. “We have guys that play multiple positions, 15 hitters and lots of depth at the position. And more than all that, we have players that don’t want to disappoint the team.” Because Walker is so excited about this season’s team, he found it difficult to find weaknesses. “Maybe that we have only one left-handed pitcher,” Walker said. “One weakness might be the unknown on what it takes to win the league. They will need to feel their way through to learn what it takes to win in the end.” There are 11 players from last season’s team along with Alex Hancock, who played for the Golden Eagles in 2006 and Trent Johnson, who played for CSI in 2007. Those 13 are joined with 12 freshmen. Four key players that return include 2008 second-team all-region selections Tyler Chism, Garrett Wolff and Justin Jensen and 2007 first-team all-region selection Trent Johnson. That does not include the Golden Eagles top hitter last season - Victor Spencer. Walker will look to sophomore Tyler Curtis, Sam Armstrong and Tyler Barrett to lead the Golden Eagles early. As with any year, the ability of the team to stay healthy will dictate the team’s chances to be successful in the end. With a lot of new faces in the region, there is no clear favorite to win the Region 18 Championship. Last year’s champion College of Southern Nevada returns just nine players. Salt Lake also has a lot of new faces, returning seven. Western Nevada has a good mix of newcomers and returners. “It will come down to which team finds a way to play well in the end,” Walker said. The winner of the Region 18 Tournament will host the district playoff for the berth in the JUCO World Series.

5 Boomer Walker 5th Season

It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach four years ago. In those four years, Boomer has amassed a 141 wins and just 91 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle. “My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time won’t see a whole lot of changes,” he said. “I would say the only difference is that my approach is not as old school.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria are busy with their son. No one was surprised he has a baseball moniker - Tai Ripken Walker.

6 Aaron Bond 1st Season

Former Golden Eagle Aaron Bond joins the College of Southern Idaho baseball program as the pitching coach. Bond played for CSI from 1995-1997, earning first team all region honors both seasons. In 1997, Bond posted 146 , the most ever by a CSI pitcher in one season. That same year, he ranked second in the nation in strikeouts. After CSI, Bond was drafted by the and played four years of minor league ball with them. Shoulder surgery ended his pitching career with the Rangers. After recovering, Bond played in 2001 in the Northern League in Pennsylvania. The past seven years, Bond has worked at the Bakersfield Baseball Academy coaching pitchers. “It’s a dream come true to return to CSI,” Bond said. “I’ve always wanted to come back and I’m excited to finally have the opportunity.” Bond, 31, has two daughters Abigail and Emma.

“ Having Aaron and Mitch join our club gives us a different way to look at things and a renewed energy. They both have a strong desire to have success at CSI. I have a lot of confidence in what they do and am excited to have them.” - Boomer Walker

Mitch Stachowsky 1st Season

Mitch Stachowsky begins his first year at CSI as a student as- sistant. Stachowsky, who played for the Golden Eagles from 2002 through 2004, comes to CSI from Pocatello, Idaho. A Highland High School graduate, Stachowsky earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore catcher in 2004. He was drafted in the 50th round of the draft by the Red Sox follow- ing his two years at CSI. He played three years of , competing in ev- ery league but AA and the big leagues. The furthest he went was Triple A in the Red Sox organization. Last summer, Stachowsky coached the Pocatello Running Rebels American Legion team. “I love this area and baseball,” Stachowsky said. “This was a per- fect fit and an opportunity for me to give back to the school that gave me so much.”

7 Skip Walker 36th Season

Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People who spend a lot of time around him are familiar with the phrases “jeezo-peezo,” “mentality,” and a few others too colorful to print here. His players, both former and current, can recite the five P’s: “proper planning prevents poor procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought to the CSI program that defines who he is. Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker inducted into the CSI Athletic Hall of Fame, but Frontier Field was officially named the James F. “Skip” Walker baseball field. In his 31 years as head coach at CSI, Walker planted the trees, built the clubhouse and played a major role in creating one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the way, he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in nine JUCO World Series and winning a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988, fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975. Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip continues to be a part of CSI baseball, staying on as a hitting coach. Walker, 64, has been married to his wife Julene for 42 years. They have a daughter, Carly, and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden Eagles head coach.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an offensive assistant that has won more than 1100 games in his career. I’m in a great, great situation. He can now use his knowledge to help the players without worrying about all the other stuff.” - Boomer Walker on having his dad and former head coach Skip Walker as an assistant.

8 Volunteer Assistant Coach Gene Ritchie

“Our program couldn’t survive without Geno. He is the first one at the field each day and the last one to leave. He is the hardest working retired person in the country.” - Coach Walker

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate is in the midst of his second year at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics. Bate, 48, has worn many hats at CSI. He first came to CSI in 1993 as an English professor and women’s basketball coach. “CSI is a great place to work,” Bate said. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with athletics and academics. We have great coaches and a great staff here and the work they’ve done this year has been very positive, not only on the court but in the classroom and community as well,” Bate said. “I love working with our many boosters, fans and corporate sponsors who have helped make CSI a special place to be.” Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All- Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife, Donna and three children, live in Twin Falls.
