Widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the history of sports, Armstrong had brought global attention to cycling as the man who had triumphed over cancer and went on to win bicycling’s greatest race, the Tour de France, a record seven consecutive times. Charting Armstrong’s life-story (and given unprecedented access to both the Tour and the man), Gibney began filming what he initially envisioned as the ultimate comeback story – Armstrong’s return from his 2005 retirement and his attempt to win his eighth Tour. -

Throughout the years it has evolved from a heavy text criticism to application to film and documentary. The Armstrong Lie is another documentary that highlights the controversial actions of former seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong. -

A season‐win total stuck at six has taken some of the shine off that success, but the fact remains that Vincent Lavenu’s team has been influential all season long. Founded in: 1992. Wins in 2016 (as of Aug. 22): 6 RIDERS TO WATCH Romain Bardet (FRA): Age 24, turned pro in 2012. Palmarès: 5 wins including two stages of the Tour de France. This season: 1 win; 2nd in the Tour de France, 2nd in the Critérium du Dauphiné, 2nd in the Tour of Oman. In 2016, this French climbing specialist continued his impressive rise to the higher echelons of world cycling, proving that he was one of the few men who could give Chris Froome a run for his money, both in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France. Though tired after the Rio Olympics, he’ll be eager for end‐of‐season success in Canada, where he has done well in the past (5th in Montréal in 2014, and 7th last year). Alexis Vuillermoz (FRA): Age 28, turned pro in 2013. Palmarès: 5 wins including Stage 8 of the 2015 Tour de France. This season: 2nd in the GP de Plumelec, 3rd in the French National Championships. A series of crashes and health worries have kept his former mountain biking specialist from fulfilling the promise of his exciting 2015 season. -

OBSCENE INTIMACIES: POSTMODERN PORTRAITURE IN DOCUMENTARY FILM AND TELEVISION by Angela Walsh B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2012 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2015 © Angela Walsh, 2015 Abstract The past several decades have witnessed a steadily increasing output of documentaries which aim to explore the intimate lives of individual subjects. Although there has been no official scholarly study delineating these films as a documentary sub-genre, they have been variously termed portrait or biographical documentaries, and they are a persistent feature of both documentary film production and non-fiction television programming. This project aims to situate these films and television programs within broader cultural shifts that have occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century, including an upsurge in the ubiquity of images, distrust in the photographic medium’s ability to access the real, and dismantling of taste hierarchies. All of these changes fit under the broad paradigm of postmodern theory and culture, a societal condition that continues to evidence itself in the current age. Despite postmodernism’s proclamation that social relationships and individualism have collapsed, contemporary portraiture documentaries still aim to facilitate a sense of connection between viewer and subject. Postmodernism intersects here with what Richard Sennett has called the “intimate society,” which is characterized by a societal impetus toward personal revelation and emotional expression. I posit that portraiture documentaries represent the collision and working through of these two competing cultural features. -

Journey to the Academy Awards: A Decade of Race & Gender in Oscar-Shortlisted Documentaries (2008-2017) PRELIMINARY KEY FINDINGS Caty Borum Chattoo, Nesima Aberra, Michele Alexander, Chandler Green1 February 2017 In the Best Documentary Feature category of the Academy Awards, 2017 is a year of firsts. For the first time, four of the five Oscar-nominated documentary directors in the category are people of color (Roger Ross Williams, for Life, Animated; Ezra Edelman, for O.J.: Made in America; Ava DuVernay, for 13th; and Raoul Peck, for I Am Not Your Negro). In fact, 2017 reveals the largest percentage of Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors of color over at least the past decade. Almost a third (29%) of this year’s 17 credited Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors (in the Best Documentary Feature category) are people of color, up from 18 percent in 2016, none in 2015, and 17 percent in 2014. The percentage of recognized women documentary directors, while an increase from last year (24 percent of recognized shortlisted directors in 2017 are women, compared to 18 percent in 2016), remains at relatively the same low level of recognition over the past decade. In 2016, as a response to widespread criticism and negative media coverage, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences welcomed a record number of new members to become part of the voting class to bestow Academy Awards: 683 film professionals (46 percent women, 41 percent people of color) were invited in.2 According to the Academy, prior to this new 2016 class, its membership was 92 percent white and 75 percent male.3 To represent the documentary category, 42 new documentary creative professionals (directors and producers) were invited as new members. -

NEWS RELEASE For immediate distribution Froome, Contador, Sagan, Evans, Hesjedal and Schleck to compete in the Québec City and Montréal Grands Prix Cyclistes Saint-Lambert, Québec, Tuesday, August 2013 – Chris Froome (Sky Procycling), winner of the 2013 Tour de France and the current UCI WorldTour points leader, will be one of the main attractions at this year’s Québec City and Montréal Grands Prix Cyclistes, to be held on September 13 and 15. For the first time, the races organized by Serge Arsenault and his team will feature the reigning champion of the world’s greatest bike race. Great Britain’s Froome will not be the only Tour de France title holder lining up for the start: Cadel Evans (2011), Alberto Contador (2007 and 2009) and Andy Schleck (2010) will all be getting their first taste of the Québec City and Montréal courses as well. The races will also feature Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal, of Garmin Sharp, winner of the 2012 Giro d’Italia, more determined than ever to deliver a podium performance in front of the home crowd, after a season marred by bad luck. The race peloton of 21 teams of 8 riders each (including the 19 ProTeams, the world's top squads) will feature some of the planet's greatest cycling stars, joining this quintet of history-making riders. They include Peter Sagan (Cannondale Pro Cycling), the Slovak who has twice claimed the Green Jersey in the Tour de France and is one of the winningest cyclists in the world this season, with 16 victories to his credit; Rui Costa (Movistar), who won in Montréal in 2011 and had two stage wins in this year’s Tour de France; Christophe Riblon (AG2R La Mondiale), winner of the Alpe d’Huez summit stage in the Tour de France; Lars Petter Nordhaug and Robert Gesink (Belkin-Pro Cycling Team), Montréal GP champions in 2012 and 2010 respectively; Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Merida); Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma–Quick Step); Tony Gallopin (RadioShack Leopard); Richie Porte (Sky Procycling) and many others. -

Miscellaneous News • The City recently received its CalPERS Annual Valuation Report, which includes employer rates for future years and provides updated information regarding the funding status of the various City retirement plans as of the June 30, 2010. The good news is the actual rates for 2012- 13 and projected rate for 2013-14 are lower than the estimates received from CalPERS last year. On the other side of the coin, the City’s total unfunded liability increased by $3.3 million – however higher than expected returns on CalPERS investments resulted in a lower than projected unfunded liability amount. Details of the report can be found in the enclosed memo from Finance Director Nelson Smith. • AEG, owner and producer of the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race, announced this week Bakersfield will play host to the individual time trial portion of the race on Thursday, May 17, 2012. Bakersfield is the only City to host the time trial during the eight day, 13 city race. The time trials are an all-day event which historically has been hosted in Solvang or Los Angeles. The time trial consists of cyclists racing alone against the clock on a 15-20 mile course (route is yet to be determined). -
