For Immediate Release March 22, 2012 Five Finger Death FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 22, 2012 FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH RETURN FROM KUWAIT, LAUNCH U.S. WEST COAST/ CANADA HEADLINING TOUR DATES W/ SOULFLY, WINDOWPANE START MARCH 23RD IN LAS VEGAS Las Vegas, NV- This week, 5FDP prepares for a massive hometown headlining show at the Joint in Las Vegas, en route to more west coast headlining dates and a trek into Canada. The band has just returned from a visit to military bases across Kuwait, where they touched down for performances and or visits on bases that included Camp Moreell, Camp Beuhring, Camp Patriot and others. This is the band's second visit overseas to perform for the troops in two years . "What a stellar way to start the spring,” singer Ivan Moody shared. “Playing for the troops is always an honor and seriously humbling. Can't say enough about the experience- everyone was so respectful and warm. I hope we helped morale and it was a privilege to give back to those that give so much for us." 5FDP's current single, "Remember Everything," has been Top 5 on the Active Rock radio charts for months. This is the band's ninth straight Top Ten single at Active Rock Radio going back to "The Bleeding" in the spring of 2008. Five Finger Death Punch are one of the most heavily played bands at rock radio, as "Never Enough," "Stranger Than Fiction," "Hard To See," "Walk Away," "Bad Company," "Far From Home," "Under And Over It," and now "Remember Everything," each has become an anthem in its own rite. The band's current album, American Capitalist , continues to sell extremely well - with over 345,000 copies sold since its debut at #3 on the Billboard charts October 11th. Speaking of "Capitalist," the aptly titled release is on pace to go Gold by June, which would be the band's third record to hit RIAA-Certified Gold status in the last two years. Cumulatively, track downloads from 5FDP have exceeded one million sold- a staggering amount in rock today. Similar success has been witnessed in the Great White North, with the band's second album War is the Answer on the cusp of Canadian Gold certification from the CRIA. Five Finger Death Punch was founded in 2005 by guitarist Zoltan Bathory (formerly of U.P.O.). He recruited members to the band including former Motograter vocalist Ivan Moody, W.A.S.P. drummer Jeremy Spencer who also jammed with Neil Yockey), former Anubis Rising/Deadsett bassist Matt Snell and Jason Hook. Caleb Bingham, the original Five Finger Death Punch lead guitarist was replaced with Darrell Roberts of W.A.S.P. in 2007, who in turn was replaced by Jason Hook in 2009. The band recorded their debut album The Way Of The Fist in 2006 with Stevo "Shotgun" Bruno (Mötley Crüe, Prong) and Mike Sarkisyan (Spineshank). The record was mixed and mastered by former Machine Head and Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader. Soon thereafter, the band signed a deal with Firm Music, a branch of "The Firm". Their debut album The Way Of The Fist was released on July 31, 2007. The record charted into the Billboard 200 on its first week of release, and reached the #1 position on Billboard's New Artist/Heetseekers chart. In an "unfriendly climate for metal", their debut single "The Bleeding", went top ten against all odds and received radio airplay for eight months and the video for the song was voted on MTV2's Headbangers Ball Top 5 Metal Videos of the Year.     HELLBOUND IN EL SALVADOR: HEAVY METAL AS A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE IN CENTRAL AMERICA by Christian Pack A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October, 2018 © 2018 Christian Pack All Rights Reserved Abstract Heavy Metal in El Salvador has been a driving force of the underground culture since the Civil War in the 1980s. Over time, it has grown into a large movement that encompasses musicians, producers, promoters, media outlets and the international exchange of music, ideas and live shows. As a music based around discontent with society at large, Heavy Metal attempts to question the status quo through an intellectual exploration of taboo subjects and the presentation of controversial live shows. As an international discourse, Heavy Metal speaks to ideas of both socio-political and individual power based around a Philosophy of Life that exalts personal freedoms and personal responsibility to oneself and their society. As a community, it represents a ‘rage’ group, as defined by Peter Sloterdijk, that questions Western epistemologies and the doctrines of Christian Philosophy. This is done in different ways, by different genres, but at the heart is the changing of macro- (international) discourses into micro- (local) discourses that focus on those issues important to the geographic specificity of the region. In the case of Black Metal, born in Norway, it is interpreted in El Salvador through the similarities between the doctrines of Hitler and those of the most famous dictator in the country’s history – General Maximiliano Hernandez – and then applied, ironically, to the local phenomena of the Salvadoran Street Gangs (MS-13 and 18s) and their desired extermination.

Abstract “‘Moments of Clarity’ and Sounds of Resistance: Veiled Literary Subversions and De- Colonial Dialectics in the Art of Jay Z and Kanye West” employs rap music as an object of inquiry into the question of contemporary manifestations of anti-Black oppression, demonstrating the ways in which the art of rappers Jay Z and Kanye West in particular, covertly elucidates the conditions and discursive and ideological mechanisms of power that make possible the exploitation, repression, and destruction of Black bodies in America. In the first two chapters, I argue that this illuminative potential is, in part, what attributes to the political utility of mainstream rap music. My first goal is therefore to make apparent mainstream rap music’s rightful place in Black liberation politics given its ability to unveil the functionality of age-old Eurocentric, white supremacist paradigms, such as rendering Black bodies incorrigibly animal, denying Black bodies access to subjectivity, or negating Black ontology. These ideologies give rise to exclusionary monolithic constructions of what it means to be human, pathological constructions of “blackness,” Black masculinity especially, and subsequently, the arbitrary conferral of power (to both state apparatuses and individuals racially coded as “superior”), which manifests in the form of systematic and institutional racism, and ultimately, Black male disembodiment.
