We have started, and will continue, to hold conversations with any parents who have queries or concerns regarding the Warmest regards Options process. The Year 9 tutor team have done a great job to ensure that the choices meet both the student needs and the school's criteria – it is very important that we ensure students are on the right courses.

Year 10 students have recently had the opportunity to partic- ipate in a mock interview as part of their Careers Programme. Students completed a CV and an application form and were then interviewed by volunteers from the local business com- munity. We would like to thank our business volunteers as without their help we would not be able to offer these types of valuable learning experiences. All our students will have gained from the experience and will be able to reflect on this opportunity and the feedback they received. Our interview- ers have been extremely complimentary about our students Well, Spring has arrived with the promise of longer days and shorter nights. Lets all hope for some warmer weather over the Easter period so as to enjoy some time outside with families and friends. As Easter has arrived later this year the middle term of the year has been longer than other years bringing a well deserved break to all students and staff members. The Governing Body has enjoyed another term where our time has been invested in understanding potential outcomes from the new examination measures, progression towards becoming an , teasing through the financial budget to ensure sustainability and ensuring our safeguarding continues to be at the highest standard to deliver well being to all students and staff.

As you will be aware, there are changes this year to the grading of examination results; the traditional letter grading will turn to a numerical outcome. This transition is not straightforward as letters and numbers do not correspond exactly, an eight letter span now encompassing nine numbers. This means that comparisons on a year to year basis will not be easy although we can effectively measure our outcomes against the national and local picture. As in previous years the school has been working incredibly hard to predict outcomes and ensure effective interventions are in place to maximize outcomes for all students.

The longer term landscape for schools indicates that becoming an Academy is prudent to ensure financial sustainability and protect the character, ethos and vision for our school. In essence, taking the future into our own hands now, will enable us to drive our own ambition as opposed to being forced to join a multi academy trust that is already established with a different outlook. This term discussions have taken place resulting in a decision to set up a MAT (Multi Academy Trust) with three other schools from the area. Our plan is to convert before the Christmas break at the end of this year. Further communication will be initiated by the school after the Easter break. It is important to mention that becoming an academy does not change the name of the school or indeed how it operates on a day to day basis but it will change the structure of governance and how services are bought into the school.

Many of you will have seen on the news the growing discomfort from schools regarding school budgets that, although cash flat are in reality shrinking due to increases in costs. Edgbarrow is certainly not immune from the impact of this and each year it becomes progressively more difficult to balance the books. This situation is an additional reason to become an academy which whilst it does not substantially increase the funding, does allow us to gain benefit from economies of scale in the services and materials that we procure. At this point it would be remiss of me not to remind you of the opportunity for parents and carers to donate to the school through the Just Giving portal on the school website. Anything you can do to help to ease the financial pressure on the school will greatly benefit your child’s education.

My last update has the potential to be rather contentious. This is not my intention, but the safety of our students and staff is paramount. Edgbarrow operates in a space that is very open when compared to other schools and, due to the landscape and positioning, it is impractical to totally fence and gate our premises. At the beginning of this year the school closed the permissive pathway through the school to minimise access in this manner; the pathway remains closed between the hours of 08:00 and 19:00. This has helped to reduce the number of people without school business who are on site while our children are there.

Another current safeguarding issue is that of vehicles driving on and off the site; we have seen a significant increase in this over time. It would greatly improve student safety if parents/carers would make arrangements to drop off and pick up from a location near the school instead, as many already do. Your co-operation in this will enable us to minimise the danger of vehicles in motion, whilst a large number of students are arriving and leaving both on foot and by cycle, in the same space as our students and also help staff to more easily spot people who shouldn't be there. If this is likely to cause you any difficulties please contact [email protected] so that we can discuss this with you. Year 7 News Head of Year : J Cooper

The Year 7s have had an extremely busy Spring term both academically and with the many opportunities we have made available to them during the term.

It was an absolute pleasure to read their first grade reports in January. I am impressed to see the positive attitude that they are showing towards their work. It is really important to me that every pupil is trying their hardest in every lesson regardless of their ability. I was delighted to be able to present certificates to over 160 students who had achieved all ‘meeting or exceeding’ for their attitude to learning and are therefore displaying an excellent attitude towards their studies. The next grade reports for Year 7 will be issued in the summer term and I look forward to seeing an equally impressive set of reports.

We have had a number of inter-form challenges this term. The PE activities have been closely fought and the tutors and I have been impressed with the commitment and effort shown by the students. The results are as follows:

Winner - 7P Winner - 7V Winner - 7R Winner - 7S Runner Up - 7R & 7V Runner Up - 7P Runner Up - 7S Runner Up - 7P

During our PSHEE sessions we have looked at a number of topics including friendship and healthy lifestyles. We organised another interform competition to allow the students to work as a tutor group on an aspect of these topics. The aims of this competition were to allow the students to explore the effect of peer pressure on making decisions and develop strategies in assertiveness to stand up to peer pressure by producing a piece of work entitled ‘Everyone matters’ to be performed by the tutor group in front of the year group. Once again the tutors and I were astounded at the quality of the work produced. The performances and messages conveyed by the students were excellent and made the work of the judges very difficult. However, first place was awarded to 7S with 7R and 7W sharing joint 2nd place only one point behind 7S. 7S are now the first winners this year of the year group ‘Duck Award’ Congratulations to everyone who took part!

To achieve their best at school it is important for all pupils to attend regularly. We become concerned if a pupil’s attendance falls below 95%. This equates to half a day missed every fortnight which will obviously have an impact on their learning. If your child is absent please ensure that you contact the school immediately on our absence line or via email. We would also be grateful if you could stress to your child how important it is that they speak to the teachers to find out what they have missed and catch up on the work.

Finally I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Easter and look forward to seeing the pupils on their return after the holiday, rested and ready for a further term of challenges.

Year 7 students attended a Stem event at 3M to encourage young girls and their parents/carers to have a career in science and included a tour of the 3M innovation centre, the labs and talks by scientists in the company as well as a chance to have 1:1 chats with the scientists. It was a really fantastic event and the girls really enjoyed it. This was all part of national science week and we have been running assemblies all week to celebrate it. The attached video shows what the Year 7s enjoyed on Tuesday so have a look. Year 8 News Head of Year : M Jackson

The Spring Term is always a short term and a very busy one in school. Year 8 have played their part in this and are joining in as active members of the school.

First and foremost in school is always the lessons and the learning and I continue to be impressed with the way Year 8 approach their lessons and the high standards of work produced. Whenever I visit lessons I am always impressed with their enthusiasm, excellent attitude and the quality of the work they are producing. Well done Year 8, keep up the good work.

During the term, we have issued grade reports and then followed up with parents evening. I hope you found the report and meetings informative and helpful. I certainly enjoy having the opportunity to meet with you and to work with you in helping your child/children achieve the best they can. We will continue to work with you over the coming years.

As always it gives me great pleasure to see so many of the year group getting involved in the different aspects of school life. We have a large number of pupils playing in various school sports teams, with our hockey, football and netball teams all being very successful this term. Girls’ football, fitness club, cricket and dance/Zumba have all been on offer. Well done to all who have attended and thank you to the PE staff and other staff who give up their time at the end of the school day to make these clubs happen. Your work is much appreciated.

Music and drama are still very well supported by a talented group of Year 8s. It was wonderful to see so many Year 8s showing off their talents in the Concerts this term.

Year 8 traditionally support the school in their role as school reception ‘runners’ and tour guides for visitors and interviews. The number of times the office has asked me to award ‘Edgpoints’ in light of their great work when doing these roles, reflects what a great job they are doing. Our visitors often comment on what wonderful guides they are and how well they represent the school. This term one visitor was so impressed by the additional help and kindness shown by the Runner (above and beyond his duty) that she emailed School to thank us. Well done Runners, you represent the year group for us. Keep up the good work.

The ‘Edgpoints’ system seems to be working well, with pupils striving hard to gain more points and enjoying the new prizes. We have not been able to fit in an ‘Edgpoints Raffle’ this term but will fit it in early next term.

I would like to finish by wishing you and your families an enjoyable and relaxing Easter holiday. I look forward to working with you all next term.

We would like to remind you of our procedure if your child feels ill at school. If they do not feel well then they should tell their teacher straight away who will send them to the Medical room to be seen by the School Nurse or one of our First Aiders. If the student is too ill to remain in school the parents/carers will be contacted by the school to make suitable arrangements. Recently we have had a number of students who have rung parents to say that they are ill but have not been to our medical room. To ensure the safety and well being of all students please reiterate to your child that they must go to the medical room if they are not well and the school will call home if necessary. Students contact parents themselves using their mobile phones. Year 9 News Head of Year : E McClatchie

This has been a short but very busy term. I have been delighted to see so many of the Year 9s getting involved in all aspects of school life. They continue to work hard and are maintaining a positive approach to their studies. In my end of term celebration assembly I was struck by the positive emails staff sent me so that I could mention and praise the year group. So many staff have gone to the trouble to tell me how much they enjoy teaching Year 9.

Year 9s have obviously had the very important job of selecting their options this term. I have been very impressed with the mature way they have gone about this. They have listened to the advice given and taken part in taster lessons for the new subjects before making their final choices. I am sure they will go on to enjoy and excel in these subjects next year.

The year group continue to be heavily involved in sporting teams and clubs. They boys’ football and girls’ netball teams have been successful again this season. This term’s Inter-Form was really well attended, with the boys playing football and girls hockey. 9S won the football and 9T the hockey. We also had Inter-Form cross country, which was carried out in lessons early this term and won by 9U.

Many Year 9s are involved in the music and drama departments, where they are able to develop their talents. I look forward to seeing a number of Year 9s in the Spring Concert later this week.

As always the year group Inter-Form Quiz has been hotly contested. Amazingly two from Q and T had exactly the same number of points! This resulted in a tie breaker in our final assembly, with ‘T’ winning and getting the opportunity to take ‘Snoop Duck’ for this Easter holiday.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank you for your continued support. It is only by working together, at home and school, that we can get the best out of Year 9.

I hope you all have an enjoyable Easter holiday and a well-earned rest! I look forward to working closely with you all in the Summer Term.

With the changing GCSE and A Level syllabus from September we will have to undertake a number of product analysis/disassembly tasks with students. We are looking for a range of suitable products to disassemble and analyse. (They do not need to work). If anyone has unwanted products such as cameras, kettles, phones, mobile phones, radios, calculators, lamps, vacuums, and would be prepared to donate them to the school, please contact Mr Heaslewood. We are always looking for surplus materials to help maintain our resources. If anyone works at a company who could spare any surplus materials please contact Mr Heaslewood. We are interested in:- ● Paper or Card (sheet materials or rolls, white or coloured) ● Plastics (sheet or tube especially Acrylic, clear or coloured) ● Timber (hardwoods, softwoods, plywood and veneers) ● Metals (mild steel, aluminium, brass and copper in sheets, tubes, bars or off-cuts) ● Fabric (rolls).

Thank you PTA News

Thank you to all the students, staff, parents/carers and friends who have taken part in a PTA event over the past few months. These include: ● Sponsored walk ● Christmas Shopping Evening ● Bags2School ● Careers Evening ● Parent Evening refreshments ● Decorating Day ● Concert Refreshments ● Quiz ● Second hand uniform sales The biggest fund raising event to date is the Sponsored Walk, the Christmas Shopping Evening also had a record breaking year as did the last Bags2School collection. The PTA are once again organising a clothes and shoe collection with Bag2School to raise funds. If you would like to make a donation please bring your bag(s) to main Reception. The company will be collecting on Monday 24th April. Select this link for further information. The Quiz was attended by over 160 parents and the concerts and decorating day have been well supported. In total just over £20,000 has been raised. Donations have been made to support the Minibus, a set of scanning pens and some student events. A donation will also be made to assist with the purchasing of new equipment for the Sports Centre. The PTA does some great work over a number of events, if you would like to join us or contribute an hour of your time to an event please contact us via the PTA email address or the school website page.

In routine matters of absence, we would be grateful if parents would contact the school before if a student is going to be away.

The school has a dedicated telephone line and email address specifically for absence reporting. Please note that the telephone number is only able to take messages and you will not be able to speak to a member of staff. The telephone number is:- , alternatively, please the school ([email protected]).

If we do not have a reason for a pupil’s absence, under our First Day Response system, contact will be made with home. If a child becomes ill whilst at school he/she will be looked after until such time as the child is able to return home. The school does have a fully qualified nurse who can provide medical assistance where necessary. Contact will also be made with the parents as rapidly as possible. In an emergency, an ambulance may be called to take the child to the hospital, but treatment cannot usually begin until a parent gives consent.

Permission will not be given for family holidays during term time. It is extremely important that emergency contact numbers are kept up to date. Please inform us immediately if personal details change. Intermediate Maths Challenge Results On 2nd February our top set maths students in Years 9 and 10 sat the UKMT maths challenge. Mrs Holloway

On January 12th, 40 Year 11 students ventured to the Royal Shakespeare Company for a live performance of the Bard’s final and most celebrated play: . The RSC teamed up with Intel technologies for a ground breaking, never-before- seen performance. This featured 120 projectors to project real time images using live data capture. This innovative technology and timeless tale brought this GCSE English Literature text to life. Themes of love, revenge, murder, power and family run throughout the tale as Prospero, the wronged Duke of Milan and his daughter, Miranda, are stranded on a magical island. Their sole company is a hideously comical slave, Caliban, and a loyal ethereal spirit, Arial…. Until a fateful tempest strands the King of Naples along with his entourage (including Prospero’s long lost and most perfidious brother) onto the island when the comedic plot begins to unravel. Here is what the students said: ● Callum Hailes: “The stage was made of glass which was absolutely sick. But the most awesome thing was how diverse and how many different ways one background could have been.” ● Jenny Harris: “I really enjoyed the play; it was really well done with dancers, acting, singing and special effects. It was educational and interesting – and really funny!” ● Rajan Sekhon: “The play was so captivating; it really brought the book to life! A must see, great experience!” ● Emma Couchman: “It was spectacular and magical with awesome 3D effects.” ● Cristina Vacariu: “It was unique. It’s also different from the traditional plays I have seen before.” ● Lauren Bowles: “When I was watching , it was very mystical and very original.”

All students in Years 10-13 should have received their provisional summer exams timetable. The final timetables will be issued after the Easter holidays. Please ensure that your son/daughter checks their timetable immediately on receipt. Any exams that clash will be dealt with by the Exams Office and your son/daughter will receive full details with their final timetable. If your son/daughter has any questions regarding their timetables please ask them to come to the Exams Office. Year 10 News Head of Year : M Hutchinson

We are coming to the end of yet another incredibly busy term during which time I have been extremely proud of the way the year group has coped with the various challenges of new courses, assessments, mock exams and interviews and various deadlines in a condensed amount of time. It has been a pleasure to read the grade reports and see how hard the vast majority of students are working in all areas of the curriculum. It was particularly lovely to celebrate this in a recent special assembly with Mr Elsey to recognise those students who are doing above and beyond in terms of their attitude to learning in the lesson. Outside of this the students also continue to receive Edgpoints prizes and these, alongside recognition for attendance, academic performance and staff nominations have fed into our end of term Easter raffle where pupil success was celebrated through Amazon vouchers, chocolates etc. This term in our PSHEE lessons we have been discussing the world of work and preparing the students in readiness for applying for jobs. The PTA Careers Convention was our most successful to date and we hope that students found this useful in helping them make decisions about their future. Thank you to all the students who gave up their time to be ambassadors for the school and helped host the event for Mrs Robinson.

The tutor team have also worked very hard in helping the stu- dents write CVs and application forms that make them stand out, preparing them for the interview and giving guidance on how to present in an interview situation. The pupils must be congratulated on how well they have responded to this. Our panel of businessmen and women who conducted the mock interviews were very impressed with the quality of answers and how well they presented themselves. These skills will be invaluable to the students when they start applying for college, sixth form and employment in the not so distant future.

As always the students have thrown themselves into extra-curricular opportunities and we have seen great participation in many different events including the Music Concert, DofE, Maths challenge, football, badminton and netball fixtures. As I am writing this there is also a group of Year 10 pupils who are extremely excited about upcoming department residential trips running over the Easter break. Thank you to all the staff who give up their time to help organise and run these trips and events to give the students a well-rounded education and to all of the staff who support the Year 10s in consolidating their learning during morning sessions, breaks, lunch times and after school. It is very much appreciated.

Thank you as always for your on-going support with regards to uniform, behaviour and work ethic which is, as always, key to ensuring the students thrive here at Edgbarrow.

I wish you and your family a peaceful Easter, with plenty of rest and chocolate eggs and I will look forward to working with you as we move into the Summer term.

I continue to be extremely impressed with the enthusiasm, hard work and dedication I see from so many of the Year 11s at this busy time in their school career. As the pressure continues to grow and we approach the final phase of our time together, the year group continues to develop in their ability to cope and produce their best. This term alone, the students have completed large sections of their coursework for PE, Design Technology, Drama and Music. They performed so well in these assessments, adding a real boost to their summer results. A large number of the students are remaining in school beyond 3.20pm to complete coursework, attend revision sessions and for private study. I am delighted that students are taking this responsibility for their learning and I am sure that this hard work will pay off in the summer exams.

I want to give a special mention to the Hospitality and Catering class and their teachers, for the amazing 3 course Chinese meal, they designed, cooked and served in their pop-up restaurant. It was such an amazing experience and to such a high quality, I could not have been prouder.

The Year group have also been advised regarding the post-6 options available to them and have applied to Edgbarrow Sixth Form or other colleges and for apprenticeships. Offers of places on courses are now in the process of being made and students should know the entry requirements that they are aiming for to be able to take up these places in September. Remember to look out for confirmation in your emails. Throughout this busy time, the Year 11 tutors have been a source of support and guidance for the students. Their care and devotion to the students are essential in ensuring this is a successful year for the individuals in their tutor groups and I am extremely thankful for their hard work, patience and dedication to the students and the support they give me. The Easter holiday is a crucial time for the Year 11 students to prepare for the exams. As you know we have spent a lot of time helping the students to plan revision timetables, develop revision strategies and identify areas that they need to work on. It is essential that the students revise regularly over the holiday, using a variety of techniques and I would be grateful for your support in encouraging this. We would anticipate most students revising for several hours each day. It is of course, very important that they also have a break and enjoy some rest and relaxation to ensure that they are fit and healthy when they return after the Easter holiday, especially as for some students it will be only a couple of weeks before their first exam! Year 11s, therefore, need to see the Easter holidays as an opportunity to prepare themselves thoroughly for the exam period, and ensure that it is a working holiday. The school website has resources from individual departments to aid revision and to help you support your son or daughter.

I would like to thank all of you for your continued support and wish you a happy Easter.

On Thursday 16th March, Year 11 Hospitality and Catering students hosted a Chinese Extravaganza to raise money for their Prom and complete the practical part of their assessment.

They had spent months planning; deciding on dishes, job roles, guests, costing, how and where it would take place. All the planning came together on the day, where they spent the morning preparing the ingredients ready for cooking for their 29 guests.

They then spent the afternoon decorating the hall and the tables to create a beautiful setting for the guests. Some of the students then moved to the school kitchen where the cooking began, the others changed into their waiting outfits ready to greet the guests with cocktails. The guests enjoyed a 3 course Chinese meal and were waited on by the students diligently throughout the service. We could not have asked for more of the students involved and are very proud of their achievements. Well done to 11B! News Around School

Since being given our positions a year ago, it’s fair to say that the whole Head Boy Head Girl team has learnt a lot. A majority of this learning has actually just been us coming to appreciate the struggles faced by teachers (and parents) when they try to motivate children to do anything. Because really, who knew it was so difficult to get 410 Sixth Formers to come to school in pyjamas for a charity day? For people who seem to want to spend all their time sleeping, the answer is surprising, very difficult. Therefore, it feels like we have spent our entire year channelling our mothers: nagging. However, this has allowed us to get a lot out of our time in the role. One of our focuses throughout the year has been to try to ensure that the Sixth Form is not just a place to stress about upcoming deadlines and exams, but also a place to enjoy yourself. Therefore, we have tried to put on more extra-curricular activities, such as running two very successful quiz nights, despite all the competitive allegations of cheating. We have also helped to manage the captains, who have organised a variety of events. From sports tournaments to lunchtime ‘I’m a Celebrity’ themed bush tucker trials, these have helped to make the Sixth Form a place where students want to be. Following on from last year’s team, we set up the Edgbarrow Sixth Form Facebook group for students, which has been really helpful in increasing participation at events and debate club, as well as getting out important messages. However, our responsibilities have not just been limited to the Sixth Form. In the winter term, we spent a lot of the time with Year 6 students and their parents doing tours around Edgbarrow with Mr Elsey (or as Mr Matthews called it our ‘babysitting duties’) and also have spoken in lower school assemblies. Through running the school council, with the assistance of Mrs Cooper, we have been working on inter-form, charity and green projects with students in the lower school. Our most daunting experience was a speech in front of 500 prospective Sixth Formers and their parents. However, at the end of our year our hands shake a little less when standing up in front of a room full of people than they did when we first took on this role.

Being a part of the Student Leadership Team has been an incredibly beneficial experience; allowing us to improve our management skills, public speaking and organisation (although both Callum and Flora will admit that they still need to work on their punctuality to 9 o’clock meetings). As the process begins for the selection of the next team, we only hope they will learn as much as we have, and enjoy it as much as we have. PE Department
