BDG Acquires Inverse the Publisher Continues to Build Its Culture and Innovation Portfolio with Latest Acquisition BDG Acquires Inverse The publisher continues to build its culture and innovation portfolio with latest acquisition NEW YORK – July 23, 2019 – BDG today announced the acquisition of Inverse, a leading ​ technology media brand for technology, science, and culture enthusiasts. The acquisition is effective immediately and will include founder Dave Nemetz. "Bringing Inverse into the BDG portfolio is a natural step for us as we expand into technology and culture coverage," said Joshua Topolsky, Founder, The Outline. "We're excited to build on Inverse's scale and audience, and introduce even more people to new and fascinating voices, stories, and experiences." “Inverse exists to spark curiosity about the world around us, and we are thrilled to continue that mission with BDG,” said Nemetz. “With the shared resources and larger platform that BDG offers, we can amplify our coverage of the ascendant thinkers and doers who are endeavoring to build a better future.” Nemetz will serve as Executive Vice President, Inverse, working alongside Topolsky on BDG’s suite of culture and innovation brands, which includes The Outline and future projects in the technology category. BDG will continue to grow the portfolio and focus on establishing unique and clever storytelling with voices that are authoritative, insightful and will cut through the noise. Founded in 2015, Inverse reaches over 10 million uniques per month and will enable BDG to speak to new and highly engaged audiences that are interested in exploring the anatomy of the world around us. Inverse is BDG’s eighth acquisition since its founding, most recently having purchased The Outline and NYLON earlier this year. The site will also join BDG’s portfolio of distinct digital brands that include Bustle, Elite Daily, Flavorpill, Gawker, Mic, Romper, and The Zoe Report. .

This article explores conscious, instrumental interactions with algorithms, as a window into the complexities and extent of algorithmic power. Through a thematic analysis of online discussions among Instagram influencers, I observed that influencers’ pursuit of influence resembles a game constructed around “rules” encoded in algorithms. Within the “visibility game,” influencers’ interpretations of Instagram’s algorithmic architecture—and the “game” more broadly—act as a lens through which to view and mechanize the rules of the game. Illustrating this point, this article describes two prominent interpretations, which combine information influencers glean about Instagram’s algorithms with preexisting discourses within influencer communities on authenticity and entrepreneurship. I am Stephen Daintith, DMGT’s Finance Director, and I am joined by Adam Webster, Head of Management Information and Investor Relations. So today’s conference call is a chance to pull together the key dynamics behind our trading over the first quarter of our financial year, to the end of December 2015. As usual, there will be an opportunity at the end of the call for you to ask any questions. So, overall trading over the first three months of our financial year has been in line with our expectations. The revenue and profit outlook for the full year, provided as guidance at our Full Year Results in November, remains unchanged. Group revenues for the period were up by 1% on an underlying basis. Reported revenues were up 5%, mainly due to factors influencing our B2B businesses. Overall, our B2B companies generated 2% underlying revenue growth in the quarter. Our reported B2B revenues, which were up 9%, have benefited from the strengthening US dollar, acquisitions and timing of events over the period. More detail on B2B dynamics to follow. In summary for DMG media, underlying revenues were 2% lower in the first quarter, with declines in circulation and print advertising being partly offset by digital advertising growth. Portfolio management activity has continued in the new financial year, with bolt-on acquisitions, primarily for DMGI, totalling around £20m, and further refinements to the consumer media portfolio.
