    The History of Wisconsin’s Black Lawyers 2019 History of Wisconsin’s Black Lawyers The history of Black lawyers in Wisconsin is a rich one. There are many untold stories of attorneys who fought for civil rights and the dignity of Black people during a tumultuous time when there were very few Black lawyers. Over the past year, a small group of attorneys met to discuss and gather information on Black attorneys who worked in Wisconsin over the last century, highlighting some of their challenges and triumphs. This booklet contains biographies of a selected few dating back to the late nineteenth century through the 1960s. It also includes the names of Black attorneys that have graduated and have been admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar. We found hundreds of names covering a span of over 100 years. While that is a very small number compared to the thousands of Wisconsin attorneys during a comparable time, the con- tributions are most noteworthy. Early organizing of Black attorneys in Wisconsin began in 1958 with Theodore “Ted” Coggs. He convened a small group in his home to begin addressing particular concerns and challenges facing Black attor- neys in Milwaukee. In 1973, Attorney Lloyd Barbee filed articles of incorporation estab- lishing the Wisconsin Black Lawyers Association (WBLA). The group started brief banks, collaborated with Black law students and were ac- tively engaged in the community. The WBLA changed its name in 1988 to the Wisconsin Association of Minority Attorneys (WAMA). Attorney Larry Farris was the first pres- ident under the new name.
