The “old” chamber was purpose-built for Tobermory in 1975, to allow the clinic to offer life-saving recompression for SCUBA divers experiencing “the bends”. The “old” chamber is tiny and has been a limitation for quite a while. Enter the “new” chamber. Built in 1964 for Toronto General Hospital, it was the first hyperbaric chamber in a hospital in Canada. As the uses of hyperbaric treatments broadened steadily, the Toronto General chamber was replaced by a newer model some time ago and has been stored at Seneca College ever since. (They just couldn’t bear to throw it out...) Good thing they didn’t throw it out. It was made available — free — to Tobermory. The new medical facility was redesigned to accommodate the Toronto General chamber and... voilà. “This is an old friend of mine,” explains Dr. George Harpur. He has been involved in hyperbaric research since the chamber was installed in Toronto in 1964. He has many tales to tell (see future issues of this newspaper). Approximately 20 participants spent the day out tallying every bird that could be found in the count area (roughly from Dyers Bay Road north). A total of 1,404 birds were found of 47 species. Three of the species were new records for the count: •Harris Sparrow (1) at a feeder in downtown Tobermory •Swamp Sparrow (1) - Tobermory •Barred Owl (1) - Johnson’s Harbour area Some other interesting sightings were: •Bald Eagle (8) •Great Black-backed Gull (19) •Red-bellied Woodpecker (1) •Northern Shrike (2) •White-winged Crossbill (3) •Common Redpoll (18) Thanks to the participants who contributed their enthusiasm for birding and enjoyed a balmy day by Christmas Bird Count standards. And a huge thanks to the people who helped out behind-the-scenes with meals and logistics. Christmas Bird Count results contribute to a large, long-term database that helps to track trends in bird populations. On December 13th Tobermory debuted a new welcome sign at the entrance to Tobermory. The old sign was showing its age and was replaced by the new sandblasted and handcarved sign made by Sandra Meneray of Legendary Signworks on Manitoulin Island. The sign was designed in keeping with the new Spruce the Bruce tool-kit supplied by the county design group. This was the first co-operative project in Tobermory undertaken by the local committee as part of the Spruce the Bruce initiative.
