Kerry is a prolific artist, working with a range of mediums and brush strokes, and has an exceptional eye for detail. Kerry has always been fascinated by ocean life, especially tropical fish with their vibrant colours, and the playful expressions of dolphins. Till 2 Feb DRAWN TO WATER - Children’s book illustrations - Drawn to Water is a fascinating new exhibition at the Cairns Art Gallery that is designed to engage, excite and entertain children of all ages and the young at heart. Featuring works from the Gallery’s collection, original book illustrations from some of Australia’s most loved and remembered children’s story books bring to life a magical world of imagined creatures created by three well-known local artists - Anna Eglitis, Percy Trezise and Arone Raymond Meeks. Drawn to Water is a holiday exhibition that is designed to bring families together with hands-on activities to encourage reading, listening, talking and sharing of ideas. Each of the three artists has chosen a different way to portray engaging and imaginative images of native animals and peoples of the far north Queensland region. A theme that runs throughout the exhibition and brings the animals together is Water, which is both a life force and a symbol of unity and togetherness. The exhibition installation has been designed as an immersive and fun environment, a wonderland of interactive spaces where visitors can create their own animals and stories and listen to Arone Raymond Meeks narrate on video his illustrated book Sisi and the Cassowary. In Sisi and the Cassowary, Sisi’s tribe live near the ocean but travel inland to the waterfall to swim. Her adventure begins when she surfaces from a deep dive and finds herself in an unfamiliar place. In Percy Trezise’s illustrated book, The Land of the Magpie Goose People, the children of the Kadimakara People must navigate around the Great Lake (Balanorga) and travel through many lands as they try to find their way back home. In their travels the children traverse many rivers and swamps while camping each night near creeks and lagoons. In Creatures of the Rainforest, all the animals and plants that are illustrated by Anna Eglitis are reliant on water for sustenance and life. Their reliance leads to coexistence and dependency – the echidna drinks water from freshwater ponds while the mosquito flies above the waterlilies that grow in them, and the ibis and jabiru stand in the river looking for food where the barramundi swim.

21 Mar THE FIRST offering in the 2020 Tanks Arts Centre World Music Series is the Canadian contemporary folk group, The East Pointers, making their return to Cairns as part of the worldwide Yours To Break album tour. In the short time between their 2015 JUNO Award-winning debut Secret Victory and the upcoming Yours To Break, the band has performed over 450 shows in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the UK, Europe, Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Set for release on 25 October 2019, Yours To Break will see the award-winning trio embark on a national Canadian tour this November, followed by a worldwide tour in 2020. Comprised of Tim Chaisson (vocals/fiddle/percussion), Koady Chaisson (banjo/tenor guitar/moog) and Jake Charron (guitar/keyboards), The East Pointers have always been musically complex and technically brilliant. The trio’s core is traditional Celtic, but on the new album, fiddle tunes are grounded in complex rumbling bass lines and a dirty Americana exploration turns on a dime into a light-hearted guitar feature with flamenco reference Palmas. “I feel like this album is the best expression to date of the band’s appreciation for so many different types of music and the fact that we as a band are comfortable enough in our own musical voice to start expressing those influences and loves,” Koady says. The album was written across the globe, with Koady in Australia, Jake in England and Tim in Costa Rica while they were working on the album. Produced by Nova Scotia-born, multiple Grammy and JUNO Award winning songwriter and producer, Gordie Sampson (LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), Yours To Break finds the band drawing on their historical Canadian Celtic roots and looking forward in equal measure. The East Pointers play Tanks Arts Centre, Tank 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost $35/$30 for concession and youth 13-17 years, and are available by calling 1300 855 835

The highly-anticipated headline tour kicks off at Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns on March 27, then moves through to regional parts of the country as well as metro cities, finishing up on May 16 in Wollongong, where the band will complete their 65-date global tour. 12

bloody well chuffed to be going back out on the road in Australia! We can’t wait to see you lovely people!” Today’s news comes shortly after Boy & Bear revealed their new video for their third official single, Telescope. The psych-pop harmony-drenched track is lifted off Boy & Bear’s #4 debuting ARIA Album, Suck on Light, with the video directed by filmmaker Nick Waterman. Front man Dave Hosking says of the new clip, “This clip is ultimately about the triumphs of struggle, with a little bit of tongue in cheek. We loved that idea of being beaten to a pulp but popping out the other end still feeling like a winner!” For their Suck On Life Tour, the expansive live show will include even more songs off the new triple j featured album and the tastiest cuts from their previous album releases; , and award-winning album, Moonfire. 28 Mar Cairns fans will have the pleasure of seeing the gloriously original performer in all of his rollicking glory when he takes to the iconic Tank 5 stage for a rare and intimate solo performance. To describe Stoneking’s style of music can be a little tricky. The 1920s pre-war blues sound is key, but there is equal helpings of New Orleans jazz, jug band music, hokum, country and calypso, and lately he has brought in elements of jump jive, early rock’n’roll and gospel. His gift is that he brings them all together without anything sounding out of place. His career is not shaped by the need to constantly pump out record after record, with the predecessor to 2014’s Gon’ Boogaloo, Jungle Blues, coming out six years earlier in 2008 and scooping the 2009 ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots album, which led to a global tour and sell-out shows. Instead, Stoneking follows his own unique rhythm. He surprises first-time listeners, throws curveballs at long-time fans, and everything he does contains at least some background level of bafflement for all involved. Fans can expect songs old and new at his upcoming show, as well as some favourites performed as never heard before.$35 /$30 (concession & youth 13-17 years) prices include booking fee [Rated PG], 7pm, Tank 5, Tanks Arts Centre – seated/standing, more info & booking call 1300 855 835

15 – 16 Apr Two huge acts from Bluesfest 2020 will make their way north to Cairns as part of the official Bluesfest Touring offering. Academy Award winner and music icon Buffy Sainte-Marie will perform on Wednesday 15 April, and Legendary British blues musician John Mayall on Thursday 16 April. The two huge announcements will join The Beautiful Girls, The East Pointers and Ian Moss as the first of many big shows to take place at the renowned Tanks Arts Centre in Edge Hill in 2020. Sainte-Marie and Mayall will join the likes of Dave Matthews Band, Patti Smith, Crowded House, Lenny Kravitz and more at the Bluesfest 2020 festival in Byron Bay from 9-13 April. Since her ground-breaking debut album, It’s My Way in ’64, Sainte-Marie has toured and disrupted the status quo throughout her career that spans more than half a century. Having spent her whole life creating, Sainte-Marie’s artistry, humanitarian efforts, and Indigenous leadership have made her a unique force in the music industry. In 1969, she made one of the world’s first electronic vocal albums; in 1982 she became the only Indigenous person to win an Oscar; she spent five years on Sesame Street where she became the first woman to breastfeed on national television. She’s been blacklisted and silenced. She’s written pop standards sung and recorded by the likes of Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Donovan, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. She penned Universal Soldier, the definitive anti-war anthem of the 20th century. In our current climate of damaging #fakenews and toxic hubris, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s incisive honesty, clarity, and intelligent compassion stand out in sharp relief. For more than five decades, Blues Hall of Fame inductee John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, earning him the

13

title, "The Godfather of British Blues". The English blues singer, pianist, harmonica player, guitarist, and songwriter founded the band, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the 60s; a band whose members included many celebrated blues and blues rock guitarists, including Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and Buddy Whittington. Attracted by the West Coast climate and culture, Mayall made his permanent move from England to Los Angeles in 1969 and began forming bands with American musicians. Throughout the next three decades, Mayall became further revered for his many jazz/rock/blues innovations featuring such notable performers as Blue Mitchell, Red Holloway, Larry Taylor, and Harvey Mandel. Mayall’s popularity endures with a succession of dynamic albums including the Grammy-nominated Wake Up Call that featured guest artists Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Albert Collins and Mick Taylor all the way to his newest album 'Nobody Told Me' (2019).
