Dependent Origination: Seeing the Dharma Week Six: Interconnectedness and Interpenetration Experiential Homework Possibilities The experiential homework is essentially the first exercise we practiced in class involving looking for the boundary between oneself and other than self while experiencing seeing. This is the exercise my dissertation subjects were given for my data collection portion of my dissertation research. It relates directly to the transition from the link of nama-rupa to the link of vinnana, and then sankhara, that I spoke about in my talk this week. Just so that you can begin to have some experiential relationship to my research before I present my dissertation in our last session in two weeks, I’m including the exact instructions as they were given to my participants as well as the daily journal questionnaire they were asked to fill out. Exercises like these are meant not as onetime exercises but for repeated application. Your experience of them will often change and deepen if they are applied regularly over an extended period of time. My subjects used this exercise as part of their daily meditation practice for 15 minutes a day over a period of 10 days. Each day they filled out the questionnaire, their answers to which then became a significant part of my data. See below. Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong with believing that your own tradition is the most profound of all. Padmākara, the second Buddha, was the greatest amongst the golden succession of scholars and siddhas in India and Tibet. He was like the moon amongst the stars. In the Nirvana Sutra and elsewhere the Buddha himself prophesied Padmākara would teach the result yana, the mantrayana. It is because of this great master’s bodhicitta and unsurpassable power that the vajrayana teachings exist in their completeness in this world. In the Akanishtha realm there is the primordial buddha Samantabhadra,Vajrasattva and others. In India there has been Prahevajra, Saraha, Nagārjuna, Padmākara, Vimalamitra, and others. In Tibet there have been Padmākara’s twenty-five main pupils, the hundred and eight great tertöns, the omniscient Longchen Rabjam, Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, Jamyang Khyentse and so on, an incalculable number of rainbow body vidyādharas, more than would fill this world. -

Dissertation Advisor: Janet Gyatso Catherine Anne Hartmann To See a Mountain: Writing, Place, and Vision in Tibetan Pilgrimage Literature Abstract Buddhist thought diagnoses human suffering as the result of a fundamental misperception of reality. As such, Buddhists have developed practices that aim to replace or improve ordinary ways of seeing the world. In Tibet, one such practice is pilgrimage to holy mountains. This dissertation explores this application of the Buddhist project to restructure perceptual experience. Tibetan pilgrimage is structured around the idea that the holy mountain is actually a wondrous palace for an enlightened deity. Of course, most people do not typically see it in that way, but the goal for pilgrims is to learn to see the mountain as a sacred palace through the transformation of their perception. This project asks how Tibetan texts attempted to transform perception, and explores the role of poetic language, as well as the physical landscape itself, in doing so. -

Thinking Beyond Thought: Tsongkhapa and Mipham on the Conceptualized Ultimate Jay L Garfield Smith College Harvard Divinity School University of Melbourne Central University of Tibetan Studies ROUGH DRAFT—COMMENTS INVITED DO NOT QUOTE WITHOUT PERMISSION In Tibetan discussions of the two truths—and in particular in Geluk discussions, inflected as they are by Dharmakīrti’s epistemology—the nature of our knowledge of the ultimate truth leads to interesting epistemological and ontological problems. Given that the ultimate truth must be a possible object of knowledge, there must be a pramāṇa by means of which it is known. But only bodhisattvas on the path of seeing or above, or buddhas, are capable of directly perceiving the ultimate truth. So, for the rest of us, our knowledge of the ultimate is conceptual, and hence mediated by rjes dpag (anumāṇa) and so must be conceptual in nature. But the ultimate transcends all concepts, conceptions and signs. And so it would appear that we can know nothing about it. But that would suggest that we can’t even know this, or that there are two truths. Moreover, the idea that ordinary beings and lower-level bodhisattvas cannot know emptiness at all would wreak havoc with Geluk understandings of lam rim, and of the role of study on the path, according to which our ability to verify our apparent perception of the ultimate depends upon the concordance of the object of direct perception in meditative equipoise with the understanding achieved in conceptual meditation and in subsequent realization (bcad shes). -

At the same time, however, meat is a standard part of the Tibetan diet, and abandoning it is widely understood to be difficult.
