THE BELMONT TIMETRIAL

The first Fresno Cycling Club Belmont Time Trial of the season was held May 12th. This event was the start of the fifth year FCC has been doing the Time Trials. A lot of time trial enthusiasts showed up with 36 people giving it a go against the clock - - a great turnout for the first event of the year! The weather was good too, in the upper 80s and the wind wasn’t as bad as it can be, blowing out of the northwest at about 5 mph or so. Check out the results below; there were some great times posted for this year’s first time trial.

May Time Trail Sponsor Momentum Cycling was the sponsor of the May 2012 Time Trail. Kirk Bailey of Mo- mentum was on hand to personally give each rider a tube and congratulations for a ride well done! Momentum also supplied electrolyte replenishment tablets by Hammer Nutrition for all the riders - - something all riders can use. Momentum has moved to a new shop at 1710 Clovis Avenue in Clovis, which is right across Clovis Avenue from Lowes. It’s a super-nice shop, so go check out their new place and say hi to Matt, Ed, and Kirk. Tell them thanks for their great support of FCC! www.m- cycling.com or 559-449-0223.

Owner Kirk Bailey of Momentum Cycling Blossom Trail Café Raffle Prize Winner The winner of the free meal from The Blossom Trail Café was Jon Torrey (Jon is the one wearing the helmet) Peppino Caracciolo, the head chef for The Blossom Trail Café, was on hand to give Jon his gift certificate. Jon was the closest rider to hitting a time of 28 minutes without going over.

Peppino and everyone at the Blossom Trail Café have been unbelievably supportive of our time trial series, and have always been more than accommodating in letting us use their parking lot to stage the time trials. Please show FCC’s appreciation of their con- tinued support by eating at The Blossom Trail Café the next time you are pedaling around in the area. It’s good food by good people; you’ll enjoy it.

Volunteers The Time Trial series can’t happen unless there are folks willing to help out. Year in and year out a number of club members have stepped up to volunteer. This time around was no different. Once again, Don Bier risked his thumb running the stopwatch, as he has done since we started doing these time trials four years ago. Also on hand to help was Tom Guevara, Doug Wachtell, Dean Hubbard, Kent Tanaka, and Richard Hoff. Thanks so much for your efforts so the rest of us can ride! Racers wait their turn to hammer on the 10 mile Belmont Time Trial

KIRCH FLATS CENTURY

Each year FCC puts on a couple of members-only rides; one of the many benefits of club membership. This year’s installment of the Kirch Flat Century was well attended by cyclists ready to take on the foothills east of Pine Flat Lake. Yours truly decided to take a turn on the descent down Maxon a little too fast and had the special pleasure of playing tackling dummy with a boulder. After I surveyed the dam- age, I was quite relieved to find I only had a few scratches (on my b i k e ) .

As always, the volunteers made all the difference as those of us who got to ride enjoyed some great snacks along the way as well as an outstanding after ride BBQ prepared by Board Member Kent Tananka.

ALL LEVEL CLUB RIDE

Last months All Level Club Ride built upon the success of the previous editions. Four groups, all starting from the corner of Armstrong & Herndon, began the ride on an unseasonably cool morning.

The A group headed out to Shaw & Academy before returning to the start.

The B group, led by Nancy Dooley, made their way up to the corral on Watt’s Valley Road.

The C group, led by Michael Quiroz, took the Pitman Hill route over to Humphreys Station.

The D group, led by Alan Jacobson, headed up Wildcat and Burroughs Valley then back down to Humphreys.

Alan’s group rocked it on the climb around the back loop and met up with the C group for a fast paced jaunt up Snowman and back down to the valley.

Originally, Dennis Ball had led the D Group but once we all got to the corral (and Alan had destroyed us all on the way out) someone mentioned lunch and, low and behold, Alan became the new D ride leader and the rest of us thought we had lucked out and were headed back, when Dennis took a right and headed up Pitman Hill towards Humphrey’s. We eventually got that lunch, but not until we tacked on two more climbs.

If you’ve not joined us for an All Level Club Ride, you are missing out on what is quickly becoming a club favorite; what are you waiting for? This month’s installment will be on June 24th and will start from Clovis East. Check the ride calendar for more details and we’ll see you there!

The Fresno Cycling Club invites all riders to take the chal- lenge at this year’s 36th Annual Climb To Kaiser on Satur- day, June 30, 2012. We offer three different rides to choose from: The traditional Climb To Kaiser, rated as one of the 10 toughest rides in America by Bicycling Magazine; The Tollhouse Century; and the Millerton Metric Century.

The Climb to Kaiser is not an easy ride. How much you en- joy the ride will depend on your training in the months prior to the event. The Climb to Kaiser riders should be able to complete a century with 8,000 to 10,000 feet of climbing in 8 to 10 hours. We suggest that each rider have a bicycle in excellent condition, carry two water bottles and tools for doing your own minor repairs .

For more info check out the website: NOTE: this months general club meeting will http://www.climbtokaiser.com/ be for those who will be helping out with this years ride. If you’re volunteering or you would like to, please join us on Wed Jun 13th at 7:00PM at University of California Fresno Center, 550 East Shaw in the Calav- eras Room (Across from Fashion Fair Mall).

THE LANTERNE ROUGE ( THE RED LANTERN)

Anyone who’s ever ridden the circuit route around Auberry Rd, over to Friant and back to Fresno has passed this month’s featured hill, “Casino Hill”. I passed by this hill (and over it) many times in the back seat of my parent’s car as we headed to town or to the back of Sky Harbor to do some fishing. It never once dawned on me, back then, that I might one day consider trying to ride a bicycle up this bad boy. At just over 6% it’s certainly not the steepest grade around, but this is one hill that takes a fare amount of fitness, technique, and a whole lot of will power to get over!

UPDATE: I received an email from a club member who was able to shed some light on the origins of the name of last months featured climb “Woogie Hill”. Apparently, Millerton General Store, at some point in the not so distant past was named “Woogies”. I’m sure local cyclists, of

Casino Hill the time, made Woogie’s a popular rest stop, as it remains today. So, it Cat: 4 Length: .5 mi would seem, the logical name for the hill would be “Woogie’s Hill”. The Elevation Gain: 250ft question remains, though, is it singular or plural as in Woogie Hill or Avg. Grade: 6.1% “Woogie’s Hill”? VOLUME XXXXII , ISSUE 6 PAGE 15
