Painter of genre, scenes of peasant customs, he also leaves some portraits. He is credited with more than 900 paintings, most often of small dimensions and painted on wood. Van Ostade is said to have entered the studio of in 1627, where he had A. Brouwer as a classmate. If one discerns badly the influence of Hals, on the other hand the example of Brouwer was decisive in Van Ostade, who became, in , the great painter of the "gueuseries", such the Farm room (Copenhagen, SMfK), the Cabaret Interior (1636 ?, Louvre), the Peasants at the Cabaret (Mauritshuis) or the Brawl (1637, Ermitage). These early works, painted in a range of simple colors, animated with earthy figures, draw direct inspiration from, but simplify the spirit, style and subjects of Brouwer. In 1634, Van Ostade was made a member of the Haarlem guild and became dean in 1662. Until his death, he hardly left Haarlem, except for a brief trip to in 1657, where he married.

Around 1640 he renewed his style in contact with 's chiaroscuro and adopted blond tones in a clear light subjected to a play of very fine halftones which contrasted with the dark tones of the first period. From around 1660, the chiaroscuro decreases, while the technique becomes smoother and finer. From this last period, the Alchemist (1661, , NG), the Dutch Cabaret (1663, Brussels), the Peasants at the Inn (Mauritshuis) seem to come close to the picturesque tone of J. Steen or Metsu. Van Ostade moved further away from Brouwer's striking expression in the Painter's Studio (1663, , Gg), the Auberge (London, Buckingham Palace) and the Traveller's Rest (1671, ). The artist is the author of nearly 800 drawings and watercolors, the corpus of which has recently appeared. The spirit and the jovial atmosphere of the
