Release Notes for X11R6.8.2 The X.OrgFoundation The XFree86 Project, Inc. 9February 2005 Abstract These release notes contains information about features and their status in the X.Org Foundation X11R6.8.2 release. It is based on the XFree86 4.4RC2 RELNOTES docu- ment published by The XFree86™ Project, Inc. Thereare significant updates and dif- ferences in the X.Orgrelease as noted below. 1. Introduction to the X11R6.8.2 Release The release numbering is based on the original MIT X numbering system. X11refers to the ver- sion of the network protocol that the X Window system is based on: Version 11was first released in 1988 and has been stable for 15 years, with only upwardcompatible additions to the coreX protocol, a recordofstability envied in computing. Formal releases of X started with X version 9 from MIT;the first commercial X products werebased on X version 10. The MIT X Consortium and its successors, the X Consortium, the Open Group X Project Team, and the X.OrgGroup released versions X11R3 through X11R6.6, beforethe founding of the X.OrgFoundation. Therewill be futuremaintenance releases in the X11R6.8.x series. However,efforts arewell underway to split the X distribution into its modular components to allow for easier maintenance and independent updates. We expect a transitional period while both X11R6.8 releases arebeing fielded and the modular release completed and deployed while both will be available as different consumers of X technology have different constraints on deployment. Wehave not yet decided how the modular X releases will be numbered. We encourage you to submit bug fixes and enhancements to bugzilla.freedesktop.orgusing the xorgproduct, and discussions on this server take place on <[email protected]>. -

Comp 175 - Graphics In Class Lab 0 Setting Up OpenGL, GLM, and FLTK Description: In this lab, your task is to set up your development environment for future labs and assignments that use OpenGL, the GLM library, and FLTK. OpenGL is the standard (3D) graphics library. Although there are other graphics libraries out there (e.g. Vulcan, DirectX or Direct3D by Microsoft, Metal by Apple, and Mantle by AMD), OpenGL remains the most common and most popular API for implementing 3D graphics applications. For convenience, we will be using the GLM library (GLM stands for OpenGL Mathematics) to do all of our linear algebra. The library will help keep the code readable when manipulating matrices, vectors, points, and such. Finally, we will be using FLTK (version 1.3.4) in conjunction with OpenGL. FLTK is a cross-platform, lightweight graphical user interface (GUI) library that supports OpenGL canvas. Since FLTK is cross-platform, you should be able to use your own favorite operating system and windows environment. What a cross-platform toolkit means is that you will write your GUI code once, and you can compile the code in Windows, Mac, and whatever operating system that FLTK supports. The resulting compiled program will be native to the operating system (whereas Java is also a cross-platform language, but Java applications are run in a virtual machine). Personally, I use a Windows machine at home and at work. I have therefore written the initial support code and demo applications in Windows (using Visual Studio 2017 Enterprise edition). For this class, we will support Windows and Mac development environments. -

Amateur Radio Software Distributed with (X)Ubuntu LTS Serge Stroobandt, ON4AA Copyright 2014–2018, licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA Introduction Amateur radio (also called “ham radio”), is a technical hobby Many ham radio stations are highly integrated with computers. Radios are interfaced with com- puters to aid with contact logging, propagation prediction, station spotting, antenna steering, signal (de)modulation and filtering. For many years, amateur radio software has been a bastion of Windows™ ap- plications developed by However, with the advent of the Rasperry Pi, amateur radio hobbyists are slowly but surely discovering GNU/Linux. Most of the software for GNU/Linux is available through package repositories. Such package repositories come by default with the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice. Package management systems offer many benefits in the form of security (you know what you are getting from whom) and ease-of-use (packages are upgraded automatically). No longer does one need to wander the back corners of the internet to find wne or updated software, exposing oneself to the risk of catching a computer virus. A number of GNU/Linux distributions offer freely installable ham-related packages under the “Amateur Radio” section of their main repository. The largest collection of ham radio packages is offeredy b OpenSuse and De- bian-derived distributions like Xubuntu LTS and Linux Mint, to name but a few. Arch Linux may also have whole bunch of ham related software in the Arch User Repository (AUR). 1 Synaptic One way to find and tallins ham radio packages on Debian-derived distros is by using the Synaptic graphical package manager (see Figure 1). -

We increased the Foundation‘s staff with three new employees—a GTK+ core developer, a Program LETTER FROM Coordinator, and a Strategic Initiatives Manager—expanded our efforts with new projects, and continued making great soware. We had three wildly successful conferences, several hackfests, and a number of newcomer events geared towards helping new contributors get THE GNOME involved in GNOME. We sponsored three amazing Outreachy interns and mentored nine students through Google Summer of Code. There were numerous technical successes: updates to GTK, two new releases of the desktop environment, and numerous infrastructure improvements, including both hardware and soware upgrades. We introduced an Inclusion and Diversity team in order to make the FOUNDATION GNOME community a more welcoming place. We announced the GNOME Community Engagement Challenge. We had speakers and booths at conferences in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. -
