COMMENTARY COMMENTARY Sensory and cognitive adaptations to social living in insect societies Tom Wenseleersa,1 and Jelle S. van Zwedena A key question in evolutionary biology is to explain the solitarily or form small annual colonies, depending upon causes and consequences of the so-called “major their environment (9). • Aloe Scientific Primer International Aloe Science Council
The International Aloe Science Council Presents an Aloe Scientific Primer International Aloe Science Council Commonly Traded Aloe Species The plant Aloe spp. has long been utilized in a variety of ways throughout history, which has been well documented elsewhere and need not be recounted in detail here, particularly as the purpose of this document is to discuss current and commonly traded aloe species. Aloe, in its various species, can presently and in the recent past be found in use as a decorative element in homes and gardens, in the creation of pharmaceuticals, in wound care products such as burn ointment, sunburn protectant and similar applications, in cosmetics, and as a food, dietary supplements and other health and nutrition related items. Recently, various species of the plant have even been used to weave into clothing and in mattresses. Those species of Aloe commonly used in commerce today can be divided into three primary categories: those used primarily in the production of crude drugs, those used primarily for decorative purposes, and those used in health, nutritional and related products. For reference purposes, this paper will outline the primary species and their uses, but will focus on the species most widely used in commerce for health, nutritional, cosmetic and supplement products, such as aloe vera. Components of aloe vera currently used in commerce The Aloe plant, and in particular aloe vera, has three distinct raw material components that are processed and found in manufactured goods: leaf juice; inner leaf juice; and aloe latex. A great deal of confusion regarding the terminology of this botanical and its components has been identified, mostly because of a lack of clear definitions, marketing, and other factors.

    G. Korakis, A. Gerasimidis, K. Poirazidis & V. Kati Floristic records from Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park, NE Greece Abstract Korakis, G., Gerasimidis, A., Poirazidis, K. & Kati, V.: Floristic records from Dadia-Lefkimi- Soufli National Park, NE Greece. — Fl. Medit. 16: 11-32. 2006. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Dadia–Lefkimi–Soufli National Park in North-Eastern Greece is a protected area distin- guished as particularly significant not only at the national but also at the European level. The long-term but mild human exploitation coupled with the heterogeneity of the habitats and the maintenance of nature have resulted in the conservation of an important biodiversity of biota, characterized by the existence of unique and rare species of flora and fauna. The present study provides an initial recording of the flora in the area based on fieldwork, and consisting of a total of 351 vascular taxa. Collective data on the chorology, life-form and the habitats of plant taxa are presented. Introduction The Dadia–Lefkimi–Soufli National Park is situated on the North - Eastern tip of Greece, close to the Turkish and Bulgarian borders. It is a representative example of preser- vation of the natural environment in a healthy state, as it has undergone only a small degree of ecosystems mismanagement and low levels of human annoyance. These conditions, in conjunction with the Park’s geographical location is situated between two continents, as well as the heterogeneity of the landscape, which has been generated by traditional human activities, have created an ideal place for the existence of many species of flora and fauna (Adamakopoulos & al.

  • Relative Ranking of Ornamental Flower Plants to Foraging Honey Bees (With Notes on Favorability to Bumble Bees)
Relative Ranking of Ornamental Flower Plants to Foraging Honey Bees (With Notes on Favorability to Bumble Bees) Whitney Cranshaw Colorado State University Observations were made during the 2007-2009 growing seasons on the relative attractiveness of various flowering ornamental plants to honey bees (Apis mellifera). This information was collected so that honey bee favorability - or lack of favorability - may be considered in plant selection. The study was conducted by repeated visits to public garden plantings in Larimer, Denver, Adams, and Cheyenne counties. Gardens were chosen that had large mass plantings of numerous flowering plants so that comparisons could be made and included the Denver Botanic Garden, gardens at Colorado State University (PERC, Flower Demonstration Planting), Welby Gardens, and Cheyenne Botanic Garden. These sites also were chosen because plantings had identification labeling. Plantings were visited between 2 and 12 times between mid-June and mid-September. Evaluations were made by examining plants that were in flower for the presence of honey bees. A planting was then given a relative ranking based on honey bee numbers. A 0-3 scale was used: 3 - Heavily visited by foraging honey bees 2 - Moderately visited by honey bees and foraged 1 - Honey bees seen occasionally visiting flowers 0 - Honey bees do not forage at these flowers Data were collected from a total of 319 different plant entries durig this study. Variation in rankings between dates did occur; where this occurred from multiple ratings the final ranking was rounded up to a whole number. Numerous other bees and other insects were commonly seen on many plants.
