As per Ayurveda year is divided into six seasons, in which three season Shishira, Vasanta and Greeshma are known as Aadanakala . Other three seasons Varsha, Sharad and Hemanta are said to be Visargakala. In Visarga kala, as the Sun is located in southwards position, its heat reduces or slows down due to the effect of time and its position with respect to the Earth, wind, cloud and rain. The power of the Moon is predominant. Rainwater decreases the heating effect of nature. All of these lead to the predominance of non- dryunctuous, amla (sour), lavana (salty), and madhura (sweet) rasa respectively and step by step rise of body strength in human beings during these three seasons. Out of all the Ritus, Hemanta Ritu is a unique Ritu in terms of having uttam bala.

  • The Concept of Creating and Regulating Time in Vedic Ritual the Concept of Creating and Regulating Time in Vedic Ritual
The concept of creating and regulating time in vedic ritual The Concept of Creating And Regulating Time In Vedic Ritual Maitreyee Deshpande Maitreyee Deshpande, Department of Sanskrit, University of Pune, Pune - 411 007, Maharashtra Time is an important factor that governs the life of man. Numerous speculations have been put forth by various thinkers about ‘time’. These speculations are based upon numerous philosophical systems. ‘Time’ is interpreted differently by a Physicist as compared to an Archaeologist or even a Philosopher. Thus attempts have been made in each field to interpret and understand this very important factor. They all interpret time according to their Weltanschauung. There also have been numerous theories about the creation of time. In this paper an effort is made to show how time could be created and regulated with the help of vedic rituals. Time is often accepted to be created by Prajaapati by many ritual texts. Shatapatha Braahmana (S B) (XI.1.6.12ff) explains the two terms samvatsara and prajaapati. It says Prajaapati created the deities and he thought that he had obtained everything (atsaarisham). Therefore he became sarvatsara, which is doubtless the same as samvatsara. Also there are four syllables in the word ‘samvatsara’ as well as in the word ‘prajaapati’. Therefore samvatsara is the image of Prajaapati. (S B) (VI.1.2.18), while referring to the creation of the year, says that Prajaapati who became relaxed is the year, and his five bodily parts too became relaxed and they are the seasons in a year. In (SB) (XI.1.6.1ff), regarding the creation of seasons by Prajaapati, we read as follows : In the beginning there was water.

  • Ayurveda, the Traditional System of Medicine Gives Equal to Daily Regimen As Well As Seasonal Regimen
Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine gives equal to daily regimen as well as seasonal regimen. Both are dependent. Because we change our daily regimen according to seasons. Humans are blessed with a beautiful environment to live in. The nature of the environment changes with the seasons. There are six seasons. Summer, rainy, spring, autumn, early winter and late winter. One season accompanies the other in the form of a cycle. In our life’s journey, we pass through childhood, middle age, old age which is not under our control. Similarly we have to face all season irrespective of what your age is or where you live in. Seasons are a part of our life. Ayurveda has described each season with its features and appropriate regimen in ritucharya chapter. Ritu means season and charya means regimen. From this we come to know that regimen in each season is different from the other. Another thing is that seasons is not unique in all parts of the world. The basic concepts in Ayurveda is related to tridoshas. Vata, pitta and kapha are the tridoshas. Human body can’t exist without these basic principles. These doshas are subjected to variation according to ages, day and night, food, lifestyle, seasons etc. Doshas predominate in a particular season depends upon the characteristic feature of that season. Each season has its own features. Seasons are formed as a result of earth’s position with respect to sun. Depending on this, there are two major divisions: uttarayana and dakshinayana. In case of uttarayana, sun is predominant. Strength of the person decreases during this season.
