Our Programs

Name Description Type

Elementary Opera Children are immersed in the arts through residencies ranging from 12 to 18 Residency Residency sessions that are led by Lyric teaching artists in partnership with classroom teachers. Students learn to express themselves creatively by studying music, drama, movement and creative writing, which culminates in a student performance of an original work. Includes a professional development workshop for participating teachers and teaching artists.

Elementary Opera CPS teachers involved in the Elementary Opera Residency program are oriented to Professional Residency Teacher the program, trained on the curriculum, and collaborate with Lyric Teaching Artists Development Workshop to develop a customized opera residency program for their class. Six Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) available.

Explore Opera! A professional Lyric teaching artist will visit classrooms and engage students in Residency, Resources activities that address the important themes, musical highlights, and production elements of a selected opera. Available for classes attending The Magic Flute and/or Carmen. The fee is $175 per presentation.

Opera In The Our production of "Jason and the Argonauts" comes to city and suburban Resources, Field Trip Neighborhoods neighborhoods and features a cast of spirited young professional singers in full costume with colorful sets, props, and live musical accompaniment. Lyric Unlimited provides specially-developed student and teacher guides.

Opera In The Learn how this story-based art form can provide content for literacy units based on Professional Neighborhoods Lyric's Opera in the Neighborhoods performance. Teachers will receive Development, Teacher Workshop customizable unit plans and extension activities that infuse general classroom Resources curricula with excitement. Three Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) available.

Performances For Students will enjoy a full-length Lyric Opera of Chicago production at the beautiful Resources, Field Trip Students Civic Opera House performed in the original language with English translations projected above the stage. Lyric Unlimited provides specially-developed study guides.

Secondary Opera This 30-week residency is designed to support and enrich the music learning Resources, Field Trip, Residency objectives of CPS choir teachers in developing high school music programs. This Residency program will combine: weekly, full-day, year-round classroom assistance from a Lyric professional teaching artist, an intensive 4-session unit of study of a Lyric mainstage production, and special in-schools visits by Lyric guest artists.

Student Backstage Witness the inner workings of the Civic Opera House and learn what really goes on Field Trip Tours behind the scenes of a world-class opera company. Students see the theater, stage, and dressing rooms; visit the wig and wardrobe departments; view props displays; venture across a six-story-high catwalk; and even try on authentic costumes and armor. Students will be impressed by the tremendous variety of skilled professionals working at Lyric and realize that it's not just singers who can have a career in opera.

Youth Opera Council A group of Chicagoland high school students who share a passion for opera and the Out-of-School and/or performing arts. They meet regularly at the Civic Opera House, where members Summer deepen their knowledge of opera through up-close experiences with Lyric sta, artists, and the day-to-day workings of the company. The Council also creates and hosts events and activities aimed at teen audiences.
