Perhaps in consequence of Athens’ social barrenness, the diary for these two-and-a-bit months consists mainly of descriptions of expeditions outside the city, and there Hobhouse often skirts bathos by his tourist-guide obsession with distances, compass-points, and directions. But there are highlights. The account of the near-fatal visit to the spa cave on January 21st is only slightly marred by our uncertainty as to whether or not Byron shared it.
